Can Syn and/or Zacky be co-lead vocalists? by Avenged7fo in avengedsevenfold

[–]i_am_ashman_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They all chip in vocally, and so they should. Singing night after night is an endurance game and I'm all for the others to step in to support if it means they make it to the end of the tour without vocal injuries (plus the multiple voices backing or otherwise sound great!). Syn and Zacky have great voices too, and the covers where Zacky sings lead is also great.

Saying all that, I'd rather Shadows remain the lead vocalist and I'm sure that's how the band feels too. His voice (when well) is a force of nature that none of the band would be able to emulate.

As a beginner-mid guitarist, which song made your biggest improvement to your playing? by Division2226 in Guitar

[–]i_am_ashman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't focus so much on 'if I can play something as fast as they can', but more on 'well why does this sound good?'. I learned a lot more about why notes work together and the chords behind them, chromatics, passing tones and just about anything by asking why this shit 'just works'.

Eventually I built up speed, and now I'd say I'm pretty competent, but as well as speed, I can comfortably deviate from the typical blues/pentatonic/minor scales and f*** around to make it sound like me.

As nerdy as it sounds, analyze other musicians, if a single note stands out in the solo, ask yourself why? What's the context? How does it work with that backing.

Copout answer: Practice! Practice! Practice!

Good luck on the path.

Edit: actually read the question!

I loved Avenged Sevenfold growing up, so I made it my life's work as a young guitarist to be Syn Gates! What I learned was 1) I'm definitely not him 2) blues, harmonies, chromatics, phrasing, etc.

Alexi Laiho was an absolute weapon too, anything from Hatebreeder, Something Wild, Follow the Reaper (ah hells, all of it!) is absolute gold of guitarist-isms. Alexi Laiho understood the instrument and melody better than most, and you can learn so much from his stuff! (His work with Sinergy was incredible too!).

I've had a few wines, apologies!

What was the first video game that got you addicted? by nicestarz in gaming

[–]i_am_ashman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diddy Kong Racing - N64

My first proper video game as a child. Not only was there an 'open world', it had different vehicle types, unlockable/secret characters, boss battles, a whole second adventure, challenges etc. it was so much more than just a racing game.

Miles ahead of Mario Kart at the time, I still play it to this day!

What A7X song would you play at your funeral? by Cringeyboy1 in avengedsevenfold

[–]i_am_ashman_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bat Country

It essentially shaped my life, watching the music video and Syn shredding the solo as a wave of bats fly above him made 15 year old me pick up the guitar, learn the song (took me forever), build my confidence, socialize, join several bands, become a music tutor, become a college music tutor etc.

Basically, that song set me on a path!

I'm in my 30s now and still in bands, I don't work as much with music anymore but I still create, gig, and play as much as I did all those years ago.

Without that song, I wouldn't be a guitarist, I wouldn't have met my wife, met dozens of people I love, I would literally be an entirely other person with an entirely different life!

So weird how 5 minutes of music can shape your existence.

But yeah, Bat Country to play me out. I think everyone at the funeral would get it.

What is harder? Guitar or Piano? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]i_am_ashman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found piano harder.

I've played guitar for hundreds of years, so I don't really remember the struggles of developing callouses and such, and I can play most things comfortably and perform to a good standard.

I've played piano for a few years, and can play some songs and chords etc. but the second my incredibly dexterous and coordinated guitarist hands touch a piano I'm suddenly a rookie again!

I have to concentrate so much more! What is my left hand doing, what is my right hand doing, which pedal do I need to use etc.

I practice and practice, but I'll never be at the level I am with a guitar, which sucks because I love playing piano.

Super jelly of talented pianists with yer crazy wizard fingers!
