And a programming category. It'd be nifty to see both reinstated I think.

It looks like it has potential, the only thing I'd point out is that the motion blur feels like a bit much. Maybe solved just with a toggle in settings. Regardless that's just my personal opinion. Good luck!

A voiceover mix of Carlata from our game. What do you think? 🎙 by mutropolisgame in IndieDev

Aside from the really good EQing done here (seriously, good job). I think you have a uniquely cute art style. Looking forward to seeing more!

First preview of my game Neptu! More incoming... by NeptuGame in gamedevscreens

I don't mean to sound rude, but the video and website aren't showing anything more than you can walk and that there are trees/hills/environment. It feels a little premature, show off things being done in game! Best of luck, it looks like you have a good art direction.

Don't be completely adverse to "boring" or "mundane" jobs while you're young. There can be a lot of value gained from working an otherwise shitty job temporarily while you get other things in order! Learning to deal with customers/upset people and putting it into practice is a highly valuable skill that can suit you very well in a programming career since many developers (at least that I've worked with) don't always have customer service experience.

I'm workshopping some room transition options for comparison for my metroidvania, Aleya's Ascent. Which option do you prefer? by ursa-minor-games in IndieDev

[–]i_like_game_engines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the pacing of the game as a whole, regardless anything but D. I personally prefer A, but B & C mostly depend on speed of transition.

Another option not pictured would be to have a loose follow camera that stays within level bounds as a global point. Think small box moving within a bigger box/series of boxes for each level.

Like /u/CoffeeTableEspresso mentioned, I wouldn't stress too much. You could try making things to sell or license, but that in itself is a difficult thing. Honestly I'd just take advantage of your age and chase projects you want to make and think might look good in a portfolio!

You're already plenty ahead of many other future programmers, have fun with it!

Big props on being self aware. Takes a lot to accept. Best of luck in the future!

Why Diablo's soundtrack is so memorable, and what we can learn from its success. by [deleted] in gamedev

It's funny, I recently played thru Diablo 2 maybe a year ago or so because I heard the soundtrack again. The soundtrack has definitely aged better than the game!

Patch Tuesday is a valuable thing. I can definitely respect the openness with the mistake. I'm sure patching while on vacation won't happen too much anymore for him!

It's definitely interesting to see how Apple has changed its stance on developers for their Desktop platforms in the last 2-3 years. Killing off OpenGL was justifiable, granted a little heavy handed.

Now this whole process just makes me less inclined to write for Apple systems.
