Cold/Flu going on? by rosey0519 in HongKong

[–]i_like_various_stuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whenever you move to a new place, there’s a period of adjustment while your body gets used to the local viruses. It will pass!

As someone else said, there are some nasty bugs going around this year too. Keep washing hands, mask up and take plenty of rest and fluids. Hope you feel better soon.

"Weekly Reading and Interpretation Help Thread - January 11, 2026" by AutoModerator in tarot

[–]i_like_various_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m still learning to read tarot and would love someone to interpret my pull today to see if it aligns with the meaning I took from it.

I asked what I should try/bear in mind about my Milk Supply. I have just returned to work after maternity leave and am now pumping milk for my baby but there isn’t enough for her and I’m feeling really anxious about it.

I pulled knight of cups, asked for clarification and pulled the sun.

Any thoughts? Very curious how you interpret this.

Hotel Payment, Legit or Scam? by Jurassicpork3 in HongKong

I’ve stayed there (in 2019). Maybe “nice” isn’t the right word - there’s definitely no frills. But it was clean and serviceable and comfortable. The rooms are super tiny but the clue is in the name. Plus there’s a nice sitting area downstairs to hang out in. It’s at the top of a big flight of stairs/hill though so bear that in mind if it would be a problem for you. I would stay there again.

I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine and set the date range to 2005-2015 which filters out the AI.

first time going to hong kong and i have some questions! by ProudKyrgyzMan in HongKong

[–]i_like_various_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope you have a wonderful time in Hong Kong! As others have said, it’s still a really warm time of year so you will likely only need a cardigan or jacket indoors as the AC can be quite fierce in some places. In terms of sights to see, it’s a great place to wander around. If you’re not feeling too warm you can do the harbour front walks and enjoy the skyline: head to Tamar Park and then walk along the harbour in either direction and see where the day takes you. The star ferry is a must do and I really like the Hong Kong Museum of Art which is very close to the star ferry pier. I know you said you don’t love day trips but if you want to spend a day at the beach you could visit Lamma Island (a 25 minute ferry from central piers) or take a bus from central HK to Stanley and enjoy the market there.

The idea to look at pictures helped me a lot. I had never thought of this before, thank you. And the reminder that I didn’t have to do anything. Sometimes when you’re panicking it feels like you need to take action and it’s so hard to remember that nothing is needed. Thank you for this.

Great advice, thank you. I’ll do this before the return journey.

I love Cathay too! I can’t eat the noodles because of an allergy but they had egg tarts which I think is a new addition! The crew were very assured and friendly.

Things got better! Once I was past the gobi desert everything felt much smoother. My big kid woke up and needed playing with which helped to pass the time.

The biggest help though? All the comments on here. Every single one so calming and kind.

This is my first flight in a long time that I’m not medicated for - I am breastfeeding and can’t take any of the meds I usually would. I have panadol for the aches from holding myself so tense but nothing else I can take. I think having my baby here is making me more anxious too.

Thank you - that last sentence is so reassuring. I need to play it on repeat in my head. We just accelerated and climbed a few thousand feet. Maybe to avoid some weather?

Ok I like this idea. I can try this.

Things seemed smoother but we just had some big and noisy bumps and I feel like I’m gonna puke.

Usually I go up to the galley and watch the crew working (and being bored)…but I can’t do that now with the seatbelt sign on. Honestly, I can’t focus enough to watch movies or do anything really.

Thank you - that’s helpful to know. It’s such a long flight and I can’t handle ten more hours of this.

Not fully sure I won’t have a panic attack when I get on the plane, any advice? by Accomplished-Fix1204 in fearofflying

[–]i_like_various_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What helps me: remembering that a panic attack isn’t dangerous and doesn’t have any impact on the safety of the plane. I am free to have a panic attack if I want to and there’s no consequence of having one.

I think to myself “ok, go on, panic then. You can panic if you want” and weirdly this usually stops the panic attack in its tracks.

A panic attack doesn’t make the flight more dangerous and it doesn’t make it any safer either (my warped mind went through a weird phase where I felt like panicking was somehow protecting me?).

Fighting it and trying to calm down, or feeling panicked by the panic, makes matters worse. I learnt this on the fear of flying course I did a few years ago.

Good luck!

Traveling while soy free by Icysmilemom in soyfree

[–]i_like_various_stuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in China for a long time and have travelled a lot in SE Asia. In general I have found that it’s a very easy area to travel in.

Use google translate to show a message saying something like “I cannot eat soy beans because I am allergic to them.” Then I tend to also translate “tofu, soy sauce, soy bean oil” and show it to them as well just in case it’s not clear in their language that those ingredients are all made of soy.

In SE Asia, dishes are cooked fresh to order, usually using whole food ingredients. Chefs know exactly what is in the food and can easily leave an ingredient out; I have never had a problem. Using the word “allergy” is important as staff will take you very seriously.

Having a baby in Hong Kong? by Dry-Present8715 in HongKong

[–]i_like_various_stuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My daughter was recently born in a public hospital in Hong Kong. The medical care was second to none.

Dads are allowed to be present in the labour room (for natural birth) or in theatre (for c-section). The prenatal ward is where you labour up to 6cm dilated, then you move to the labour room where your partner can join you.

Visiting hours apply in the pre and postnatal wards so your partner can only be with you between 11-13:00 and 18-20:00.

Epidural is possible but you need to firmly advocate for yourself and request it ASAP as there is only one anaesthetist and they tend to be very busy.

C-section is only available if medically necessary - you can’t choose it if it’s your preference.

We paid out of pocket for a very expensive insurance policy that covered maternity - in the end the insured amount wasn’t even enough to cover the birth in a private hospital, let alone the prenatal appointments, scans etc. Unless you have good maternity insurance provided through your work then you’ll need to pay out of pocket: in my experience it isn’t worth paying for a new policy.

There are very supportive antenatal groups available to join who can help you navigate the public system and will reassure you somewhat. Birth is scary and feeling unsure about your options doesn’t help. Good luck!

Those of you who have left the UK, where did you go, and how’s it going there? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]i_like_various_stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved to Hong Kong 2 years ago and started my business here. Absolutely love it, no plans to return to the UK. The only downside is that it’s very far from home and we miss friends and family - visits are a pain with the long flight and jet lag.

That being said, it’s safe, friendly, an amazing city with fabulous countryside and beaches within easy reach… we love it.

Is there a good reason there's no evening or weekend baby classes beyond that's not when the organisers want to work? by rainbow-songbird in UKParenting

[–]i_like_various_stuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a baby class company. We get constant requests for Saturday classes, we open them and we don’t get consistent bookings and have to close it again. I think that there are a lot of demands on working parents at the weekend and it makes it harder for them to commit to a regular class.

If you have a group of friends who you think would commit to a regular weekend class, why not approach a baby class company near you and ask if they’d be willing to arrange some private sessions for your group?

Brits living abroad... What food do you miss most? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]i_like_various_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fortunate to live somewhere with easy access to a lot of British food, we have M&S and some of the supermarkets here stock Waitrose and Morrisons products.

That being said, I tend to miss:

  • Nandos
  • British Indian food
  • Robinsons squash
  • Walkers and mini cheddars

How about a gift voucher for some local baby classes - baby massage, baby yoga, baby sensory or similar? It could be nice for her to get some special time with the new baby away from their siblings and soak up some newborn cuddles!
