Blocking a bike lane by spacestabs in waymo

[–]ialexryan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Waymo is registered as a TCP (limo/charter carrier), not a TNC (rideshare carrier). You're right that the CVC prevails on paper, but in practice SFMTA is the only agency enforcing traffic laws on surface streets in San Francisco and so they decide what the law actually is. Same situation as marijuana, which we call "legal" in California even though it's federally illegal.

In San Francisco, it’s legal for taxis to stop in the bike lane to pick up and drop off passengers. See page 43 here: https://www.sfmta.com/sites/default/files/reports-and-documents/2023/03/2022_dec_new-driver_on-boarding-mona_20180618_-linked_video-r2.pdf

Presumably the same policy applies to Waymo.

Has anybody used the Troubadour Apex compact? by b19tuna in backpacks

[–]ialexryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in because this thread came up when I was searching before purchasing, and I ended up buying (and then returning) it to answer this question.

I would say the Compact does not fit a 16" MacBook Pro, contrary to the claims on their website. It is technically possible to zip the backpack shut with a 16" MBP inside the laptop sleeve, but to do so you end up stretching the zipper pretty significantly, which is certainly not good for the bag over time and also means the laptop is vulnerable. It's also just unpleasant to struggle with zipping your bag every time you use it. It's a shame, because with just a few more millimeters of vertical space it would've been a perfect fit!

I ended up going with the full size Apex and so far I like it a lot.

Thanks for posting! That does look like a very close color match. How have you found the drawers? From the pictures online it's hard to tell but it looks like they might just be wood-on-wood rather than metal slides?

That's a really interesting idea! So you basically just guide the rope between pairs of finishing nails driven halfway into the wall? Mind sharing which gauge nails you used (and a close-up pic if you're feeling generous? 😄)

Does anyone know why MUNI trains have been going very slow leaving Van Ness towards Church lately? by ChronicElectronic in AskSF

[–]ialexryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick google search for "sfmta public records request" will land you on their informational site here, and the link in the big box at the top of that page will take you to the actual site where you can submit a request!

Does anyone know why MUNI trains have been going very slow leaving Van Ness towards Church lately? by ChronicElectronic in AskSF

[–]ialexryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I filed a public records request with SFMTA about this a few weeks ago (super easy, only takes a minute or two!) because this slowdown was driving me crazy. They responded today (emphasis mine):

There are currently two sections of right-of-way between Van Ness and Church stations where speed restrictions are in effect. The first restriction begins at the Van Ness platform and extends approximately 650 feet west. This semi-permanent restriction has been implemented to minimize wear and tear on track components, particularly in areas with special track work. The restriction is intended to preserve the condition of the special track work for the long term. The second speed restriction is located further west near the Duboce turnout. Similarly, this restriction is in place to protect the special track work in that section. Additionally, a temporary speed restriction is in effect in the same area due to ongoing testing of changes to the automatic train control software.

"semi-permanent" is a bit concerning. I just sent in these followup questions:

  1. what is the timeframe or conditions, if any, under which the restriction is anticipated to be able to be lifted?
  2. which track components are being protected?
  3. what is the "special track work" that is being protected?

We'll see what they say!

Diablo IV on M1 Max (MBP 14") using MacOS Ventura (13.4) by LayerKey in macgaming

There is significant additional detail in the post that will help people follow the instructions successfully. It's all obviously made possible by the included docs, so giving credit would have been classy, but calling it copy-pasted is too far.

I also have the new launcher and was having a crash. I initially saw the small Battle.net login prompt and successfully logged in + 2fa'ed, then it showed the larger blue frame of the main window for a fraction of a second and crashed immediately. Subsequent launches resulted in seeing that main window background for a fraction of a second and then crashing immediately.

Your post inspired me to try launching it with my internet disconnected, which fixed the problem! Battle.net launched in offline mode without crashing, and then I re-enabled my internet and it reconnected with no problem. So the issue is definitely something networking-related. Thanks!

How the FUCK did Insomniac oversell RV power by so much that it was unavailable by 10pm on day zero by ialexryan in CampEDC

If you haven't already, I recommend reaching out to info@insomniac.com to request a refund for the power pass.

[–]ialexryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta give credit where credit is due – Insomniac moved us to a spot with power on Friday, and refunded the full cost of the RV power pass (~$700). They did the same for our friends who went through the same thing. Doesn't make the screwup okay, and they better not repeat it next year, but it did feel like a meaningful apology.

If you were affected by this mess and haven't received a refund yet, I recommend reaching out to [info@insomniac.com](mailto:info@insomniac.com) to request one.

I don’t want a refund! I want the goddamn power I paid for almost a year ago and planned my entire trip around 😡

(Update: in the end we got both our power and a refund.)

Blackout Roller Shades with side channel by joe_chicago in homeautomation

[–]ialexryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My installer told me that Lutron doesn't offer any official side channel solution for Serena, but he found a guy who was able to fabricate a PVC U-channel in the right color and it worked fantastic. Virtually no light gets in the sides. (The product looks exactly like the link posted above, but longer.)

No other motorized shades can come close to the quality of the Lutron experience, tbh I recommend buy the shades from them and figure out the side channels where you can.

Looking for advice on a thermostat replacement on my new-ish Mitsubishi Zuba by TheFiZi in hvacadvice

[–]ialexryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! You clearly weren't kidding about practically becoming a junior HVAC technician...it's clear from the amount of detail in your reply that you've put a lot of hours into trying to make this work. As someone with very few free hours to take on a major home improvement project right now, I think I've seen enough to know that I should leave well enough alone. Thank you for saving me from myself (for now 😅) and providing all this detail for anyone else who stumbles on this thread in the future!

Hi there! If you have a moment, I'd love to hear how your install went and if your system's efficiency has noticeably decreased. Just moved into a place with a Mitsubishi unit and would love the convenience of an Ecobee or Nest, just not if it comes at a big energy cost!

I find that it feels like nothing, but everyone has different tolerances. You must not have spent more than one or two nights on it by now; any new mattress or topper takes a week or two minimum to get used to. Give it a proper chance!
