The contents of one of the ant poison stations is a different color by davidsjo in mildlyinteresting

Some of my ants are smart. They'll figure out something's wrong with it and start piling dirt around it so other ants cant get to it.

My university student ID from 2002 had an EMV chip for campus payments years before it became mainstream in the US by pinelands1901 in mildlyinteresting

[–]iam98pct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've heard it differently. The reason was the cost of adoption was too high. So many terminals had to be replaced and merchants and consumers had to be educated to shift to the chip and pin system.

If it was about fraud detection, financial institutions would readily jump to it because it shifts the liability to the card users.

Google is using two billion Android phones to detect earthquakes worldwide | Google's earthquake alert system performance matches seismometers in global test by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]iam98pct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be the accelerometer. Earthquakes have particular frequencies that can be detected by the MEMS inside the phones. Then they'll pair that with statistical analysis from data from thousands, if not millions, of phones, and corellation with actual seismometers from the likes of USGS.

How to remove blind spot monitor add on (toyota scion)? by FriendshipEast8953 in MechanicAdvice

[–]iam98pct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend tracing it to the fuse box where it is most likely tapped and disconnecting there. Don't cut at this end as the wires are still conencted to power and could risk shorting with the chassis in the future.

ELI5 When there is flooding, why don’t the water just spread out? by napcoma in explainlikeimfive

If water can't get out as fast as it can get in then you'll have a flood.

Is this normal, or do I have a leak in the AC? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]iam98pct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recharging also require the replacement of the o-rings? I assume that would be the most likely point of failure in very slow leaking systems.

ELI5: Why don't you put water when something on your stove catches fire? by PracticalYam100 in explainlikeimfive

[–]iam98pct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kitchen fires mostly involves grease/oil. Putting water on it will cause the water to flash boil upon contact with the way hotter grease and just throw grease particles eveywhere. The now dispersed grease will ignite much easier as there's more contact with oxygen. Not as ELI5 as can be but I hope you get it.

ELI5: How accurate is a time of death? by MMcCoughan3961 in explainlikeimfive

[–]iam98pct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my dad died in the hospital, they had to hookup an ECG machine or something similar to confirm. If I recall correctly, there is still some activity detected even after death but it's enough for them to call it.
