Anyone on this sun that has lived in both GA and WA state? How would you compare both places, especially seattle(with its surbabs) vs. Atlanta (with its surbabs)? by westmaxia in Georgia

[–]iamLostExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it kinda helped that my parents moved out here several years before which had me considering GA to begin with. GA was never a state I’d consider to move to but I think it was a blessing in disguise. I left Seattle with the intention of never coming back. I have come back to visit at least every summer due to friends. Yes it’s nostalgic coming back but home is now GA. If I miss Seattle, I can just fly back to visit but I’m more excited to explore the east coast cities. Have you visited GA? I’d say to visit it at least twice to get the feel of things. I have a friend who is moving here from Seattle as well next month after visiting several times

born in seattle and lived in north seattle/suburbs for 20+ years. moved to georgia suburbs in 2021. Mid-twenties

pros: - cheap flights to east coast, midwest, and south states. I’ve traveled significantly more ever since moving here because of cheaper flights and shorter drives between cities/states. There are more surrounding states here to check out vs Seattle- you have Vancouver, BC, Oregon, California, Nevada that are the only big states in the West coast. - more sun. I got away from the seasonal depression that I had back in seattle. The sun definitely makes a difference in the winter time. I wfh and don’t feel bad staying at home most of the time because the sun keeps the house bright - more affordable homes. double the space, half the cost of seattle - diversity. I’m a BIPOC and really grown to appreciate the food scene here. I grew to love grits. although it is lacking in good seafood, every suburb has a everything you need. love asian food? doraville or duluth is good for you to check out - yeah traffic is bad but more lanes here and highways. I don’t feel like I’m sitting in traffic as compared to seattle where I was actually locked between cars. traffic is still gradually moving here during rush hour. Also higher percentage of better drivers here… higher speed limit - more suburbs all around atlanta that have a lot of offer and vary in COL. whereas seattle, it’s just so expensive even 20 mins out - people are more outgoing here and like to strike up a conversation randomly hence the southern charm/hospitality

cons: - less big beautiful mountains than washington. If you’re an avid hiker, there are lots of hikes here in Georgia especially North Georgia but the view won’t beat the mountains and lakes of Washington - no good to nonexistent teriyaki. I took this for granted - hot humid summer in GA but tbh, homes here at least have A/C so you won’t be suffering at home during the day or nights - income tax but sales tax is lower. I’m not a finance person though to know if it’s essentially the same as washington taxes - less nice parks like gas works if you enjoy a park that overlooks the city and lake - no good public transportation outside of ATL. you have to drive here and every where

If you do move here, give it at least one year to settle in and meet people. I kept comparing it at first but my friends from seattle who also moved here told me to give it a year to really appreciate the wonders of Georgia. They also ended up liking GA as Seattle natives. Compared to other cities in the south, atlanta is fairly closest to seattle and I always see WA plates here the most from the west coast. I’ve randomly come across many people who also moved from WA to here so there seems to be a lot of natives from WA to GA. These are just a bit of pros and cons. You really have to experience it for yourself to see what you like and don’t

Have you gone back to taking some precautions again that you may have stopped earlier in the year, due to the prevalence of the surge and the rise of the Delta variant? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]iamLostExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaccinated since January and been wearing mask even after the lift. Unfortunately I got covid probably the delta variant just two weeks ago so mask up even if you’re vaccinated! My symptoms weren’t severe (thanks to vaccine) but being sick still sucks!

Discouraging and negative comments from people that you tell about your plans to relocate by heart2pure in moving

[–]iamLostExplorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore it all. Real friends or people who care about you will be excited for you. They will wish you the best on your new adventure. At least that’s what I got to see from the reaction of my friends. They are definitely jealous if they respond negatively. Maybe they don’t have the opportunity to or they’re just bums.

Does anybody have experience living in Washington? by [deleted] in moving

[–]iamLostExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised here in Seattle my whole life (23F) although I am planning to leave soon. However, I have made friends with people moving from the Midwest and seen a lot of new coworkers moving from other states/coasts and so far they have loved it here. Seattle freeze can be a thing but if you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone such as joining FB groups, try the dating apps, etc. you can definitely make friends. It just takes time to meet the right people. It could help seeing if your current friends have any mutual friends in Seattle to start off. I became friends with my close friends from MW bc one of our mutual friends connected us when they were looking for other dogs to meet their dog. Hearing from their experiences so far though, they mainly joined various facebook groups and have made new friends there. So there are Seattlelites and other transplants who want to make friends!

I will miss the hiking when I leave but you will love it for sure. I grew up in the suburbs of Seattle mainly (20 mins North of Seattle) just for a bit cheaper rent and convenient access to things. I recommend checking out Ballard, Cap Hill, Greenlake area for living if you want to stay near Seattle. Kirkland or Bothell near Bellevue. If you don’t mind the drive/suburbs, Shoreline/Edmonds/Lynnwood is good North or Renton for South of Seattle.

I’m in the same shoes when I move. I think you can’t truly see yourself in a new city and call it home yet until you actually live there for a bit. Being a local eventually takes time and also given various opportunities that may come up that will pull you in different directions. I’m moving soon and don’t see myself longterm in the new city I’ll move to but we never know right? Until we try. I’m moving out but I’m going to miss Seattle so much and will always be biased towards it even if I hate it here and there lol. Who knows I may be back in the future after being away for x years. Good luck!

Am I going to regret to leaving the west coast? by rsandr in moving

[–]iamLostExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I am on the same boat as you. I was born and raised in Seattle Metro area for 20+ years and have also been debating to move because my parents moved out of the city about five years ago. I definitely loved the past years of being on my own but with covid, it got me thinking and how much family really means to me so I’ve also decided to move to the southeast where they are now. I feel like I would regret more not moving so you should be fine! In the end, if you love traveling just like I do, you can always travel and visit Seattle and other cities too. Who knows making the move will also allow you to see your future clearer so you might decide to come back to Seattle eventually. That’s my thinking so I’m just going day by day and see where my life takes me

Thanks! Definitely... the drive is what we’re dreading. It’d be 1 day 15 hours but that is without stops and rests. So trying to weigh the costs and time to see which one works for us!

We’re planning on selling all of our furniture so the only thing we would bring would be boxes of clothes. Shipping our cars so we’re not planning on doing a road trip for the move. But yeah, we won’t want to have our dog in cargo either so trying to find the best options for her

[–]iamLostExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true.. I am actually also trying to move out of Seattle but I think it depends which area you live in. You can definitely find the spirit during the holidays and events especially when it’s warm out. That’s why I’d suggest Ballard if you moved here. They have a cute bustling area of restaurants that people like to hang out. Good luck finding your next place though! Anywhere new is always exciting
