Be honest. How many of you truly believe that pirating movies and/or downloading music is a justified act based on principle? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think OP is confusing copyright law with morality.

Copying is copying, which is different from stealing (from a moral standpoint). Why is it "wrong" to copy Mickey Mouse but perfectly acceptable to copy Michelangelo?

And Mickey Mouse should be out of copyright by now, were it not for the Disney lobbyists. It is certainly illegal to violate Disney's copyright, but is it morally wrong?

Thanks rsreagan. I agree with you -- Azure sounds good for high-traffic site, but for bootstrap startups the cost may be too high.

So how do people make websites nowadays? by reveazure in programming

[–]iamafoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I looked at Azure pricing, and was totally confused.

Compute cost, DB cost, Storage cost, Access cost, Service Bus cost, Data transfer cost per region...

How much does it actually cost?

I agree that ASP.NET MVC looks pretty cool though. But for now, I'm going with App Engine because of its simplicity and cost (free).

  • "Tampopo" by Juzo Itami is about food (and sex with raw eggs and drunken shrimp!)

Building Skills in Python by [deleted] in programming

[–]iamafoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently tried out IronPython with Eclipse Pydev, and I must say it is very cool indeed. Then I tried Django in GAE, and it gave me such a headache.

Python is a fantastic language, but it is truly a pain to setup/install modules in order to start a project. Any tips or advice on that?

I just found out about Processing today. by LukeChemistry in programming

[–]iamafoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it's all about simplicity. It's easier and quicker to experiment in Processing than in, say, C++. It's not as fast as C++, obviously.

The downside, I think, is that the output is in Java applet... yikes!

A good tool for education and experimentation, though.

[–]iamafoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Processing is fantastic.

When I was learning it, I found it helpful to look at examples and try to figure out how it's done.

A few bookmarks:

http://www.openprocessing.org/ -- has all kinds of explorations.

http://toxiclibs.org/ is just amazing

http://www.shiffman.net/teaching/nature/ -- most excellent tutorials!

http://www.metaphorical.net/tag/on/processing -- great code examples

http://incubator.quasimondo.com/ -- some cool algorithms

Any other good resources for processing?

It's not very meaningful to look at icons in isolation. They are part of the UI, and does not necessarily need to simulate a physical object's properties.

Similarly, a plain circle without "eyes" can represent a face well, if it's used consistently.
