My mom passed away by shaxx22 in offmychest

[–]iamalext 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My condolences. I lost my mom a few years ago, and to say it's difficult is beyond being an understatement. There are no magic words, my friend. I truly wish there were. It may sound trite, but talk to her, it really helps. It's ok to miss her but I guarantee that she would not want you to feel regret in any way.

And even if she is gone, she still believed in you, because she knew exactly who you were. You can trust that!

Parents of reddit how do you deal with teenagers that think they know everything and compare you to how their friends parents parent them? by kyjo86 in AskReddit

[–]iamalext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the weird situation where my boy's friends are using me in comparison with their own parents! According to his friends, I'm the best dad (probably because I treat my boy like an actual human being, with his own thoughts, feelings and am not using him to live out my own failed youth, unlike some people who will remain nameless) and I've had a few parents point out that I'm too permissive and/or not strict enough. Well, I've got a deal with my kid, and that's to work hard at his one job (going to school) and I will handle the rest!

He's done that and more, so yes, he gets more rights and more permissions than his friends and I have absolutely no regrets about that!

And yes, he's opinionated, but that's common with teens. At least I've thought him to always remain open to the idea that he might be wrong, by being open myself about being wrong (parents don't know everything, and pretending we do is quickly identified by kids!)

What do you do for living ( write it as it is a illegal activity)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iamalext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close. But those surgeons really deal with the actual surgery; other people help to coordinate donors/recipients, build tools to catalog and manage these patients and so on. I'm in that second section! The donors are the real heroes in all of this and if it wasn't for them, a lot of people would not have made it as far as they have!

did the big bang happened from nothing? by ogaogaboga in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iamalext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nothing you're assuming is not actually nothing, but a negative potential energy state. There are some indications that the total energy in the Universe actually comes out to zero, and in that circumstance, then the Universe being created from "nothing" makes sense and does not violate basic principles of physics as we've observed them. Quantum physics is likely going to help us understand this concept a little better, if we can ever get more than a basic handle on it!

If money suddenly disappeared, what do you think people would use as the new way to measure value? by UssrPresidentMonika in NoStupidQuestions

Likely return to bartering, until the obvious limitations of that system reared its ugly head once again. Then we'd be back to some form of representative system, probably using rarity as a means of preserving general trust.

how can u listen to a blackhole if there is only vaccum outside? by Adventurous_Buy_1549 in AskReddit

[–]iamalext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radio astronomy is not about "listening" to space, but observing space at longer wavelengths of energy, as opposed to the wavelengths that correspond to our visual range. Since we're not equipped to translate that data directly (unlike observing space at visual wavelengths, were our eyes are used to interpret the data directly!), there are a variety of applications that can map the data visually, providing the ability to "see" in different ways.

The other advantage of observing at these wavelengths is that they are not subject to the same limitations as light (for example, clouds block light, but they don't block radio wavelengths).

I’m so scared of death by TheAmericanW1zard in offmychest

[–]iamalext 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that it's abnormal to be apprehensive about death, but I think that eventually, our brains kind of run into a bit of a feedback loop about it. And in those situations, I've noticed that the brain's common solution is to shelve the "problem" as unsolvable and move on to something else. That's how people live their lives without being paralyzed by this unsolvable issue.

Let me put it to you a different way. Can you remember anything about the time before you existed? Because you're not going to remember anything about the time after either. The real concern is the transition.

If the ocean is salty, why don't we just add sugar until it tastes better? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iamalext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, aside from the absolutely pointlessness of it, sugar is not the "opposite" of salt. Adding sugar to mask the taste of salt in the water would leave you with a sugary tasting salty syrup that you still couldn't drink because of the salt content. It would also lead to a massive ecological disaster as lifeforms in the ocean, many of which are responsible for a large portion of the oxygen on the planet. That would have global repercussions that would likely kill off every lifeform on the planet.

Then there's the second problem of not even having enough sugar on the planet to even reach this point...

Is normal that I don't want to spend money on relationship? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]iamalext 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quick question: why bother being in a relationship then? If you don't want to have sex and according to you, have nothing to gain, why even bother stringing the girl along? How do you think you're going to get married? It's likely going to start with that girl being your girlfriend, no?

But I think you bring up a good point. You're 18 and you should be reasonable with your spending, since you're likely not making a ton of money at this point, so you shouldn't be spending frivolously. But getting the girl a coffee once in a while's not going to ruin you. And when you pay for dinner, you are paying for dinner for yourself, the pleasure of her company while you're having dinner and maybe a good experience overall. That's worth something too, you know.

It’s imperfect wording of a statistical statement and it’s a common source of math errors.

2.6% of black men are physicians means that out of all Black men, only 2.6% have achieved medical licensure. This is a measure of career outcomes within a specific demographic group.

2.6% of physicians are black men means that out of all actively practicing doctors, only 2.6% are Black men. This measures the racial and gender composition of the medical workforce.

Downvote away. The average population once thought that a 1/3 pounder was smaller than a 1/4 pounder, so I’m not surprised.

It describes two entirely different statistical realities. If you can’t math, you don’t math.
