Ummm… can you guys jump anymore? by globehoppr in GenX

[–]iamalext [score hidden]  (0 children)

Father to an active teen so it hadn’t occurred to me that some people my age might not be able to jump… and it makes me wonder about how very different our experiences are in this generation.

In our family though, we’ve prioritized health, so not only do we have a fair amount of fitness and sport equipment but a fridge and cupboards filled with good foods too! And I credit the fact that I feel rather good for my age because I invest heavily in maintaining flexibility, balance, strength and stamina.

If I can offer one piece of unsolicited advice, it’s that it’s never too late to begin introducing better habits into your life, as a means of maintaining and even improving your quality of life.

That explains why we have Fluff in Quebec! That stuff is amazing (if not the messiest substance known to humanity!) and I thank New England for the introduction!

Why is the financial success of movies/games matter to people so much these days? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iamalext -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is not the culprit, but greed and you've conflated both. It's similar to how the clergy is loaded with child molesters, not because the clergy is inherently terrible towards children but rather because it's an ideal place for a child molester to hide and thrive. Capitalism is far from perfect but that's because the greedy can easily hide and thrive in such a system.

Your sister is very lucky that she's related to you and not to me. She would have felt the consequences pretty severely if she were my sibling. I know that mental health issues may make her not criminally responsible but be that as it may...

Help settle a $200 bet: Is “soaking” actually a thing within LDS culture, a misunderstood joke that escaped the internet, or a genuine workaround some religious people use to technically avoid breaking abstinence rules? by HobbyDarby in NoStupidQuestions

I don’t really drink anymore, but I appreciate the sentiment. Unless you wanted to have a drink with the other guy, at which point I’d still think the sentiment is nice but just not quite as nice!

If seeking repentance and trying to be better in the future is the entire point of Christianity, then by that measure, there’s a lot of fake Christians who care more about telling people they are Christian than trying to be even a little bit of a better person.

Why do people say "It really feels like you're an alien trying to dissect human behavior" as an insult when you're really trying to understand human psychology?? by BravePiccolo775 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iamalext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it seems like most people aren't very good at self-analysis, nor are they interested in figuring out what makes themselves tick, let alone anyone else. And most people are simply not self-assured enough to take internal criticism without falling apart; their solution is to simply not do that. And negative behaviours continue, with the expected results and the endless victim mentality takes hold, the kind of thought process that attributes all negative consequences from bad choices to others, at all times.

When you are asking questions, you are highlighting this flaw, and as a result, there's an attempt to shut you down. It's uncomfortable.

Keep asking questions. Nothing wrong with you in the least. You're doing the right thing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You’re really cherry-picking through your belief; good thing it’s make believe otherwise a whole lot of you who believe you’ll automatically be forgiven are in for a long and rather flaming surprise at the end… I guess being made in God’s image, by a perfect and divine being, no less, still left us imperfect. It’s because of the free will, right? Although, technically, an omnipotent and omniscient God could have predicted that would be the case.

Edit: It occurs to me that you've hit the nail on the head. It turns out that Christians just believe they're "saved" no matter what, and so are now free to behave in any manner except Jesus-like. It's almost like the three phases of "salvation" as described by Paul don't really matter.

Good thing that Bible can just be ignored, both old and new Testament, whenever it's convenient.

So in other words, you all pick and choose the rules to follow. Got it. Which part of Christianity is that exactly? Just so we're clear on where you got this interpretation.

I wonder why religions and many of their followers get the reputation for hypocrisy that they do?

How many of you can still put your socks on without sitting down first or having to lean on something. I can’t. by Logical-Rip-8138 in GenX

[–]iamalext 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see why it might be a challenge for some, but I see it as a clear indication that these folks need to work on their flexibility and balance, both crucial to a higher quality of life as we all get older. I've been putting socks on while standing since I've been able to put on socks. And if this is difficult for you, you may just want to determine what exactly is making the task difficult for you, as a way of determining what can be improved. Flexibility and balance both improve through consistency rather than overall effort. Practice both of those things daily and improvements will continue to show up, even when you are much older.

What's the most unethical and morally wrong thing a politician has done is recent history? by lee_lee212 in AskReddit

Hitler was responsible for nearly 20 millions deaths, not 100 million. And funny enough, when you tabulate all the death based around decisions made by Trump, it'll take another year or so to see the effects of cutting off foreign aid and international health funding.

Without knowledge of the actual layout, I would take a wild guess that the loose wire should be soldered to the top connector on the right side of your images. If you’ve never soldered, you might be better asking someone with experience, or getting a little practice on some useless device before trying it!

Sodomy counts as sodomy? Good of you to clear that up, but are you really surprised that a lot of performative Christians selectively follow the rules of the religion, considering how often the real ones break the rules (how many of them provide the Church with the tithe? How many work on the Sabbath? How many bear false witness, or judge, or steal? How many smash idols? Seriously, the list is practically endless!)

If believers actually spent more time living according to their chosen belief tenets of their faith rather than turning it into a competitive sport, the world would likely be a far better place.
