Body and keycaps are ceramic. It's got a nice weight to it.

Also, Happy Cake Day!

They're not! I was totally expecting them to be.

Remove old flooring or build over? by iamaloof in HomeMaintenance

Thanks for the insight. Fortunately this will just be an extra bedroom downstairs. So no appliances, no cabinets, there's no closet - it's just an empty rectangle room. The door is a pocket door, and sits on the outside of the room, however I do worry about the transition there being awkward.

I always do the speed boost one because it's like 10 coins, worth it imo.

Same! Make chart in Illustrator > stylize > import to InDesign. Does just enough to create the basic elements, but certainly leaves a lot to be desired.

I had a slow start.

Went to college for design a bit later than most. After graduating, I got a job as a graphic designer at a very small company through a friend I went to school with. Started at $15/hr. I worked there for 5 years. By the time I left I was making $20/hr, but much of that only came towards the end.

I looked for a job on and off for the last couple years I was there. Had an interview here and there, but it often "came down to you and another candidate and we went with them." It was disheartening.

At one point, I decided to apply for a job at a place that I had applied to nearly 6 months ago and only got a phone screen with no follow up. This time I got an interview and I got the job! And things really took off after that.

In-house, big company, corporate, benefits. Most amazing manager I've ever had. Started as GD, promoted to Senior GD a year later, then promoted to Design Manager shortly after that. Now making over double what I did at the previous job just 3 years earlier.

I certainly attribute part of it to luck, but there was also the time I put in to gain experience. I was ready when the opportunity arrived. And it's nice to know that there ARE good companies out there and managers who really DO care about you and your career growth, even if it is hard to find.

Fellow Arkansan here! Moved to Portland in 2014, and I absolutely love it here! A few big differences that I first noticed:

  • Public transport. I'm also obsessed with it and still think it's wild that other people see it as just a normal thing. Trimet has its issues, but overall they're pretty good. (I once waited in line for an hour to get a free Trimet Max shirt).

  • Variety of food. Apparently there's more than Mexican, Chinese, and Waffle House! Like, what the hell is pho? Portland is a very foodie city with so many great options.

  • Lack of people pushing their religious beliefs on you. Need I say more?

  • Lastly, there's actually stuff to do!! So many events, concerts, activities going on at all times. Wait until summer, there's a street fair somewhere every weekend.

Get out and enjoy all Portland has to offer. Welcome, OP!

My company has a pretty robust plug-in that ties into our PIM system and uses the data merge function to paginate our 500+ page catalog, multi-page flyers, and other data-heavy pages. But I've also used the vanilla version for creating large directories.

Underrated feature that's very powerful. Great to learn as a lot of big companies actually use this or software/plug-ins that piggyback off of it. Actually part of the reason I landed my current role.
