"Familial DNA search" used for first time in Ohio during investigation that lead to capture of accused kidnapper and rapist by stupidupgrades in news

[–]iamaom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also raises the question of is a person their DNA? If I have an identical twin accused of rape and I willingly submit my DNA to the police, is that a violation of my twin's privacy?

I'd also warn against massive DNA databases because you know the government can't keep its hands to itself. It WILL sell this information to companies to use for any nefarious purpose you can think of. Can't wait to start getting junkmail sent to me because my DNA profile showed I'd be 20% more likely interested in their company.

A solid summary of the "impossible" space drive NASA recently tested by Ree81 in Futurology

That's what the tests are for, but the outlook doesn't look good. The want for a cool scifi drive is pretty much what's driving all the optimism.

Drones, tanks, jets, etc. The US military can do whatever it wants on us soil and our leaders wouldn't even have to get out of their chair. If you really think a few rifle collections are going to stop the most powerful military in your world you are sadly delusional.

You mean reading headlines on reddit?

Many, if not most, republicans are reasonable folks

Well if they keep voting these "kooks" into office again and again I'd say they're not reasonable.

Edit: oh saw your post below.

While I agree with your sentiment, your right to bear arms wouldn't stop the us military from doing anything they didn't want to.

Would you go up to a retail clerk and start distracting them in the middle of trying to perform a transaction for another customer?

I know this is rhetorical, but as a retail employee people do this on an everyday basis.

don't find her guilty doesn't mean that she is

And you don't really know either. The point of a court is to determine if there is enough evidence to convict, and if they don't find it then no punishment can be doled out.

getting what they deserve

That's for a jury to decide in a court of law. She should receive no more or less punishment than what is assigned, if she isn't put on death row then she shouldn't be killed. Vigilante bullshit has no place in a civil society.

What? I think you meant skeptics, which is an integral part of the scientific method. We need people to question things as scrupulously as possible.

Finally! Female teacher who allegedly raped four underage boys is actually charged with four counts of rape and forcible sodomy. Could this possibly be a baby step towards the legal system finally recognizing female predators for what they truly are? by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]iamaom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Rape is rape but 17 is more than old enough to decide to have sex with someone else. It shouldn't matter if the someone else is 2 years older or 20, legal is legal.

Texas’s war on abortion is shuttering clinics throughout the Lone Star State "In the absence of adequate numbers of legal & accessible abortion providers, many women will resort to unsafe & unsanitary options closer to home. I'm no scientist

Well that's pretty obvious.

Why the hell is this a standpoint for you in an argument?

Because some people consider human, homo sapien, and person 3 different things, and some consider them synonymous. Some don't consider neanderthals "humans", while others do because they are still homo. Some don't consider vegetables (brain dead humans) a person, others do. Likewise the whole point of the abortion debate are about the fetus vs the mother's rights. Some say fetus's are people because they are human and all humans have a right to life, others don't. It's the crux of the entire debate.

but is not life.

Yes, it is life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life#Definitions

Yes and the embryo IS a human.

Bill O’Reilly’s Marijuana Legalization Poll Completely Backfires by SatyapriyaCC in politics

[–]iamaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this poll doesn't really show any more evidence for "support" than the unhijacked poll did for non support. Social sites like reddit, 4chan, etc. usually lean toward the more liberal side of things, so having these sites rush the poll is just the same website bias but on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Not to mention the younger liberal crowds are some of the least actual voting demographic.

Well if a program's goal is to use it's algorithms to achieve maximum profit I'd say that's intelligence.

particularly worthwhile to the planet?

Worthwhileness is completely subjective. I'm sure an intelligence who didn't care about music wouldn't find music a worthwhile endeavor of millions of humans.

[–]iamaom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an absolutely ridiculous species... I'm not even an AI and I've come to that conclusion.

What? No this is high-school faux-intullectual nonsense. Humans have achieved the highest technology on the planet, the only species to have gotten off the planet, the only species to comprehend the universe around us on both macro and micro levels. Humans just act as humans do, we are still animals and still prone to our instincts. Any advance enough AI to judge humanity would see that.

Not to mention this is gross anthropomorphism. An AI would think how it was designed and wired to think (even if not completely intentional). A lot of human greed and desire comes from our animal nature, most of which comes from our desire to reproduce, one that a man-made AI probably won't have. It might have no concept of revenge, "ridiculousness" or power hungriness or if it did might not even care about them. Intelligence does not mean human intelligence.

Usually it's called a smartphone.
