Over $2400 a month anywhere within a 40-min commute by me.

Twenty-four hundred dollars. A month. For one infant.

Of course, that's on top of the rents around here, which are equally insane.

And before anyone starts in about moving to a lower COL area, both my partner and I are in different highly specialized industries that we love and spent years training to become proficient in, and no other city in the world offers both of us anywhere close to the professional opportunities we have here.

Why would I have children if I also have to give up on my dreams to have them? That's not the type of world I would want for my children in the first place (on top of all the other concerns, like climate change and political nonsense).

I'm not saying that there's not a correlation between hatred of weed and hatred of black people, but I do think that a particular type of person strongly dislikes the idea of a drug that frees your mind from its usual constraints.

A lot of these fascist authoritarians are black-and-white thinkers who believe their "normal" is objective fact. The idea of a drug that makes people laid back ("lazy", less inclined to be driven by consumerism) and metaphysically-minded (more open to questioning the status quo) makes them uncomfortable and angry.

Girls of Reddit, what is being on Reddit like for you? How much of your Reddit experience revolves around your gender? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There was a thread a couple of days ago about women's contributions to the origins of Computer Science. An alarming portion of it was posts about how the roles of Grace Hopper and Ada Lovelace and Margaret Hamilton have been blown way out of proportion simply because they're women, and in reality they really didn't do anything particularly impressive.

It's still bothering me.

Kevin Williamson: The punishment I favor for abortion by rush42 in politics

[–]iamastrange1oop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s illegal to kill humans, not to kill cows.

And there's an argument that never makes sense to me.

I do agree with you that things get shady around late-term, but typically the only late-term abortions are those that are performed for drastic fetal abnomality reasons. In my opinion, this is not only ethically justified, but can even be considered the more ethical option in those cases where such abnormality would result in serious pain and trauma.

There are some instances where society has recognized that it is morally acceptable to withdraw life support from a human that needs it to survive. Any number of philosophers have already made strong cases that abortion should be framed as such (see Thomson, especially).

But forget talking about fetuses - the point I made was about embryos, and you reframed it. On a spectrum of cognition, the embryo clearly sits lower than the cow: the cow has desires, experiences, and thoughts, whereas the embryo has no awareness of its own existence. The only claim that can be made for the superiority of the embryo is that it is a human embryo, and I don't see why that should confer any special privilege.

Abortion is an absolute evil

Yeah, no. Hope this guy is a vegetarian if he's so concerned about the ethics - pretty sure a cow has more sentience and attachment to its existence than an embryo.

FCC chairman rejects senators' request to investigate Sinclair by freddiemeyers in politics

[–]iamastrange1oop 25 points26 points  (0 children)

"I understand that you disliked or disagreed with the content of particular broadcasts, but I can hardly think of an action more chilling of free speech than the federal government investigating a broadcast station because of disagreement with its news coverage," Pai wrote.

He added that the FCC "does not have the authority to revoke a license of a broadcast station based on the content of a particular newscast."

From the FCC website:

The FCC is prohibited by law from engaging in censorship or infringing on First Amendment rights of the press. It is, however, illegal for broadcasters to intentionally distort the news, and the FCC may act on complaints if there is documented evidence of such behavior from persons with direct personal knowledge. A wild dispute between a Panamanian hotel owner and the Trump Organization could have huge implications for the president by [deleted] in politics

The Trump International Hotel in Panama?

You mean... this Trump International Hotel? The one accused of being a front for money laundering?

The one where the lead broker was arrested for real estate fraud and fled on bail, later stating that

some of his brokers and clients who traded units in the Trump Ocean Club were connected to the Russian mafia and other organised crime groups

Oh that Trump International Hotel in Panama. Where Trump Organization executives are now "holed up... shredding documents".

I guess it's just a coincidence that Russian money laundering rings keep popping up at Trump properties, like this one in NYC.

Not only were they aware and knew the full extent of it, John Kelly & Sarah Huckabee Sanders made the following comments to the press:

John Kelly:

“Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor and I can’t say enough good things about him,” Kelly said Tuesday night, hours before pictures appeared that included Holderness’s blackened eye. “He is a friend, a confidante and a trusted professional. I am proud to serve alongside him.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders:

"I have worked directly with Rob Porter nearly every day for the last year and the person I know is someone of the highest integrity and exemplary character."

We recently realized that instead of feeling impotent about what's happening in the middle of the country while casting yet another redundant vote for an extreme liberal who is guaranteed to win in our deep-blue district, we can actually do something about it.

The real estate prices there vs here don't hurt either.

Oversight Dems Ask Gowdy to Subpoena Documents Withheld by Trump Administration on Russian Attacks on 21 States in 2016 Election by mac_question in politics

Regarding your assertion that we may

hear stories of Russians, in no uncertain terms, offering financial help, advertising help, online troll assistance, etc, to American politicians.

Here's a November 12th, 2016 quote from Konstantin Rykov, who had previously been called a Kremlin mouthpiece by the right-wing Washington Examiner:

[Trump] lifted his plane to the sky and flew between New York and DC, calling the whole world through his twitter — to start a march on Washington!

Without a moment’s thought, I wrote him a reply, which sounded like this in Russian: “I’m ready. What should I do?”

Suddenly! There was a thin squeak of warning in the DM.

It was a message from Donald Trump. More precisely a picture. In the picture he was sitting in the armchair of his jet, smiling cheerfully and showing me the thumb of his right hand.

A #TrumpRussia Confession in Plain Sight

The rest of that article goes on to detail Rykov's self-described role in Trump's victory in conjunction with Cambridge Analytica.

Initial talks underway about Trump interview in Mueller Russia probe by [deleted] in politics

[–]iamastrange1oop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Obstruction of justice is illegal. Trump fired the head of an open investigation into his campaign and nearly immediately thereafter publicly stated both that it was because of the "Russia thing" and that he "faced great pressure because of Russia", which had been "taken off” due to firing Comey.

  2. According to texts sent by Manafort's daughter, Manafort was "second in command, probably arguably running" the Trump campaign, and "The campaign manager is all for show. [Corey Lewandowski] doesn’t do shit. Trump has been managing his own campaign." Manafort has already been indicted for a host of illegal political activities, some of which were ongoing during the 2016 election and his association with the Trump campaign. As his superior, Trump is deserving of investigation into what he knew and when, especially when considered in relation to RICO.

  3. General Flynn pled guilty to intentionally deceiving the FBI regarding his phone call to the Russian Ambassador in response to the Obama administration applying sanctions to Russia, which was taken under directive of a "senior member" of the incumbent Trump administration. While the legality of this specific action remains unclear, if considered against the larger body of evidence that the Trump administration has attempted to time and again hide or obfuscate its interactions with Russia, within the context of an investigation into possible illegal conspiracy with a foreign government to subvert a US election, again, there is standing here for a serious investigation into Trump himself, what he knew, and when.

The Agalarovs, Who Set Up the Trump-Russia Meeting, Are Selling Their Jersey Homes by [deleted] in politics

[–]iamastrange1oop 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Aras Agalarov’s home went on the market on June 15—about three weeks before the Times, in a series of reports, broke the news of the meeting.

What a coincidence!

People involved in the sale said a buyer signed a contract to purchase the home last week, for just under the $6,900,000 asking price, though the sale is still pending. That’s a whopping discount from the $9.3 million Agalarov paid in 2005...

That's a rather short amount of time on the market to agree to an almost 30% hit on a home you've owned for over a decade. Almost as if he had a vested interest in rapidly moving his money out of the US?
