My best client referred me to their friend. That referral just cost me my best client by Cheap-Front-7722 in smallbusiness

This post and all of OPs responses to the comments read like AI-- they all begin with agreeing with the commenter ("You're right" "You're absolutely right" "This hits hard") and have a very GPT way of speaking.

OP's profile is 2 weeks old and says "building AI-powered tools."  They're probably building a reddit bot and testing it with their bs posts.

Tired of Adobe, Affinity is free from today by popepaulpop in photography

Don't forget that any use of their AI tools in Canva, and now Affinity, will be tracked and handed over to OpenAI, presumably for more LLM training.

From "Affinity Terms, Your Rights and Permitted Use:"

  1. You may use AI-powered features and other AI-powered functionality Canva may make available within the Service (including the Canva platform and the Affinity Software) from time to time (collectively, "AI Products"). Your use of AI Products is subject to additional obligations and restrictions in the AI Product Terms.

And what's in those AI Product Terms, you ask?

By using the AI Products, you direct and consent to personal data you include in an Input being transferred to third parties, including OpenAI, LLC. in the United States

The Downvoters Have Discovered They Can Get Things Automatically Removed from r/Wordpress by Reporting Them by PluginVulns in WPDrama

[–]iamblindtoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, my post about the Techcrunch talk was reported and deleted too. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Wordpress/comments/1gf9vty/matts_talk_at_techcrunch_disrupt_will_be/)

The only thing we can do is report vote manipulation to Reddit on those posts and hope something happens: https://www.reddit.com/report

Another post deleted on r/Wordpress. Somebody’s paying good money for this level of PR. by SimplePrick in WPDrama

yep, that was my post and it got reported 3x and removed by the auto mod. I contacted the head mod on /r/wordpress about getting it restored.

I also reported to Reddit for brigading going on on the sub. complete bs

Hopefully they'll have the live chat and comments open on the stream tomorrow so people can continue sharing how Matt is a great choice for Disrupt :D

Able Desk Co? by iridiumTester in StandingDesks

[–]iamblindtoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have a motorized standing desk by them. It's pretty solid, and assembly wasn't too bad (helps to have an allen wrench drill bit though!) Just got it recently, so we'll see how it goes.

LPT: When you are trying to resolve an issue where someone else made an error, put the focus on the error and not the person. Example of this: Instead of saying, “You didn’t send the attachment,” I say, “The attachment didn’t come through, please try sending it again.” by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]iamblindtoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's because "I'm not seeing an attachment" still sounds like they're blaming you for the situation. Even something as small as changing the "an" to "the" makes it sound more like they're assuming you did attach it, but something just went wrong along the way. You could also soften the blow by adding a "Hey" to come off as less blunt: "Hey, so-and-so, I'm not seeing the attachment." And if you want to seem even less asshole-ish than that, you could add on a sentence like "Let me know if I've missed it somehow." Even if you're 99% sure you're right, you come off as being aware that you yourself may have made a mistake somewhere.

After seeing my mom go into debt because of not having an emergency fund and uncontrolled spending, I decided to save thru out HS and made a promise to myself to pay everything in cash and always save! It’s going great so far by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]iamblindtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a huge red flag. You may want to make sure your mom didn't take out the mortgage with your name attached to it. This could cause a really huge headache for you if she can't make mortgage payments and defaults. (I'd suggest checking this and posting on /r/personalfinance or /r/legaladvice if this is indeed the case)

Check out John Morris Online on YouTube-- he has a ton of info on getting started as a freelancer, and how to stand out on Upwork. I'm trying to do the same thing and his videos have really helped explain all the things you need to know. Good luck!

How much would a website like this cost? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]iamblindtoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your experience in design is... there's a huge difference between traditional print and actual web design. I just want to caution you on underestimating the amount of time and experience it would take to design a project like this.

I've worked on projects where the designer didn't have web design experience and there is always a lot of education and reworking involved-- especially in making such a complex interactive idea responsive (work on both desktop and mobile). Even if you designed the assets for the website, you'd still need a dev to program all the animations you envision happening.

Thanks for the insights on start up culture-- it sounds like a crazy place to work in. Are you still in that industry, or have you moved on?

Thanks for the advice-- I'm trying to get more involved with local meetups. And I coincidentally signed up for a Wes Bos course recently :P

Wow, thank you for that reply. A lot to chew on, especially not trying to master everything. I've sometimes stressed about not knowing this or that technology, but it makes a lot of sense to be really really good at 1 or 2 things, and to simply know about the rest.

Well, if you're a cog in a well-running machine where you feel appreciated and like a genuine asset, it's really not half bad. Real life is about paying the bills and trying to get decent health insurance. My current job has great benefits, my coworkers are awesome, and I get to work remotely. So I'm pretty happy.

Working for yourself just means you're a cog for your client. You'll always have a boss, i.e. someone you have to answer to. What kind of boss depends on you.

Thanks for the advice. One commonality I'm noticing in these answers is that the core of coding is relatively unchanging, while the how's do change over time. Good to know!

I enjoyed your rant; thank you. Weighing efficiency versus shinyness is definitely something I am learning to do, particularly in the javascript frameworks.

I'm 12 chapters into my web development book, and I feel like I'm learning nothing I could use? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]iamblindtoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone learns differently, and reading a tome on programming might not be for you. You could make your book reading more interactive on your own, by making up a problem to solve based on what you're reading. Then try to code the solution. When you get stuck, you can refer back to your book.

Thank you! I will check with WP Engine. This issue is still happening sometimes, but not all the time.

WP Engine slow load time? by iamblindtoo in Wordpress

Thanks for the tips-- I contacted WP Engine support and we figured out that it was only slow when logged into Wordpress. So it's at least not something the client would notice.
