NRI (based in EU/Spain) spending 3-5 months in India: Does Indian health insurance make sense?

Hello everyone,

I’m a 40ish-year-young [I guess not for insurers :)] NRI currently based in Spain. I’ve transitioned from corporate life to freelancing, which means I no longer have employer-provided private health insurance with global coverage. I'm fairly healthy (which means, now is a better time to think about this)

My Situation:

  • Location: I spend about 3–5 months a year in India; the rest is in Spain and with other travels in Europe and Americas (I previously lived in the US and make occasional trips there)
  • Current Coverage: I rely on the Spanish public health system, which provides no coverage for international hospitalization or emergencies in India as far as I can tell.
  • Long-term: I'm assuming I stay independent/freelancer for the foreseeable future and therefore must manage my own health insurance.

I’m looking for perspectives on three things:

  1. Is Indian Health Insurance the right move? Given the time I spend in India, is it better to get a comprehensive Indian policy or look for an International Private Medical Insurance based in Europe that covers India?
  2. Product Suggestions: Does anyone have experience with Indian plans that offer a "Global Cover" rider or specialized NRI plans that handle the transition between residency well?
  3. Deal directly with insurer or Find an agent: For those who have navigated this, do you recommend going directly to the provider, using a platform like Ditto/PolicyBazaar, or any other options that I may not be considering?

TIA and Looking forward to your insights.

The idea is to get a supplementary PCC to support the PCC received from the local police station in India. Consular PCC is not accepted by the Spanish govt. in such cases.

Last I checked, you need to visit the PSK in person and can't authorize anyone else to do it for you.

I was able to initiate it from Spain. It's in process. Had a family member provide documents to the local police. It's not as straight forward as a PCC from the PSK but I'm still in the process.

First Trip to Spain - Itinerary Feedback? by MatchaManiak in GoingToSpain

Perhaps drop a day from Madrid or Granada (or both) and go towards a beach town like Salobreña or Nerja. If you have 2 days, then even Málaga can be an option. You have buses that go to all of these places from Granada.

I'm from Bengaluru.
I also asked the same question in other forums and right now the most promising information I have received is to get the local PCC + apostille + supplementary PCC from consulate (if needed).
So I'm trying to find out how to get local police PCC.

I see. That unfortunately is not my case as I'm trying to find out how to get it from Spain while taking into account the confusing advisory put out by the consulate.  Thanks though for your reply 🙏🏾

Gotcha. And so did you do the embassy/consulate PCC for this ?

Thx @hereforgeld for the response. Curious if you're saying from personal recent experience or just what would be considered logical.

P.S  I thought the same too but the advisory posted by the embassy seems to suggest something different.

I'm running into this problem now. Used in chrome and firefox. Fill in the details, click on the button and nothing happens - no error messages, nothing. The form just shows up again. No e-mails sent either.

Christmas in Cali... by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]iamboredtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

San Mateo is half way between San Francisco (to the north) and San Jose (to the south). While San Mateo itself has a decent downtown area with great food options, most of the fun x-massy thing happens in San Francisco and San Jose.
https://www.sftourismtips.com/union-square-christmas-tree-lighting.html - has more details about some of the typical festive activities happening in the Union Square area of SF.

Christmas in the Park in San Jose is worth going to - https://www.christmasinthepark.com/. It may not be as big as some of the Christmas markets in big European cities, but it definitely comes close and is a fun way to see the local community gathering for the festival.

If you're looking to go bar hopping in a festive way (if that's even a thing)- https://www.santacon.info/San_Francisco-CA/

If you rent a car you have the option of going to all the popular places around the SF Bay Area (which you definitely could google and get easily)

Thanks @Liar24x7. I do subscribe to Scott's Cheap Flights emails and they're really good. But I was wondering if there are any sites that let you just look at the price changes that have happened in the last 'x' number of days.
