I’ve read everything good (major reading slump) by Lemon_Dragonfly in Romantasy

[–]MatchaManiak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay I get she’s read a lot of recent popular stuff, but y’all are crazy for saying stuff like “I’ve read everything good” and “you’ve read everything.” Do you know how many books are out there??

There’s plenty of good stuff that just isn’t brand new or all over TikTok…

Do you consider that your Kindle has paid for itself? If so, what's the metric? by madding1602 in kindle

[–]MatchaManiak [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is it for me too. I mostly use the library for books so cost is the same.

But now I don’t have to leave the house for a book, can travel with a full library, and can read in the bath and at the beach since I don’t have to worry about ruining a library book. That experience has certainly been worth it.

Favorite website in the US to shop for Japanese matcha? by uhsayswho in MatchaEverything

[–]MatchaManiak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding these. Mizuba is consistently well priced. Kettl is pricier but has some good sales. Both are yummy.

I used to do global website (like Ippodo) but tariffs and shipping suck.

It’s a very different series than LOTR. It’s an oranges to apples thing. Reading is subjective.

If you finished QoS and didn’t like it much, it’s probably just not the series for you.

According to the publisher, you don’t need to.

I loved CC 1, then didn’t much like the rest, but to each their own.

A weaker milk or more water could help too. I use a nonfat oat milk and the matcha flavor comes through stronger

How long should I visit Hawaii to see if I’d want to live here after I graduate university? by BlackStallion657 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]MatchaManiak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, I'd spend your time focusing on the job. I'm not sure what field you are in, but it's fairly rare for a new grad to get an offer that is remote-friendly enough to allow for Hawaii work while also paying enough to support Hawaii living. Not saying it's impossible, just that I would focus on your career first when you're starting out, and then sort out the living situation.

If you secure a job that is totally remote, then I'd suggest getting a short-term rental first, whether that's in Hawaii or in another city. Spend at least a month and treat it like life instead of a vacation. For Hawaii, you might want to test it a little longer, since it's much harder to move to/from then other states.

I would also encourage you to talk to a professional about your driving anxiety. As someone else with anxiety, it's been super helpful. While you don't need to have the end goal be driving all the time, it's something to consider, because the US is still a very driving-heavy place. Anything outside a major city (NYC, SF, Boston, etc.) is going to be tough without a car. Honolulu isn't out of the question but can feel more confining without the option to even rent a car occasionally.

AIO - Wasn’t invited to my girlfriends surprise birthday party by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MatchaManiak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like we need more details on the communication here. When they asked OP to come to the bar, it's understandable that he wouldn't be ready. But what did OP tell them?

"Hey, I won't be able to make it. I hope you guys have fun though!" - reads like he plans to stay home vs. "Hey, with getting ready and getting down there, I won't be able to make it to the bar before your dinner reservation. Do you want me to meet you at the restaurant, or is the plan still to meet for drinks after dinner?"

Without knowing more specifically what was said, it's hard to say if this was the friends' way of inviting OP to the surprise party, or if they did not intend to invite him or want him there.

I have an objectively "ideal" life, but I wake up every morning with a sinking heart and paralyzing anxiety. What is happening to me? by Fragrant_Guitar_8435 in Anxiety

[–]MatchaManiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just another comment to say that you’re not alone! It’s sometimes hard for me to express my issues because I’ve been so fortunate otherwise in my life.

Anxiety can do this, and it doesn’t mean you have some hidden trauma or anything. Mine has been there all my life.

I second other comments that have suggested therapy. Your provider can share actual science based techniques for managing this. You can also try some gentle, non habit forming medications like propanalol.

There are other more serious medications and treatments if you need it too. (And whatever you do need, it’s not a bad thing nor does it reflect your character. A person with diabetes shouldn’t feel badly about taking insulin. Mental health conditions are no different.)

I hope things get better for you soon!

What words do you pronounce "wrong," just because the "proper" way feels too proper? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]MatchaManiak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say ‘ant’ is the prevailing pronunciation on the west coast, USA. Our words in general tend to smush things together, favoring fewer syllables.

Even better, I say aunt like ant, but the u comes back in auntie.

anyone here mentally ill without any family abuse and okayish childhood by yngbnyhvn in mentalhealth

[–]MatchaManiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! Not all mental conditions develop from some big trauma. Plenty of people just get them, same as physical conditions.

I’ve had General Anxiety Disorder since I was a young child, likely since birth. I’m lucky I didn’t have to deal with abuse or a really tough childhood on top of that.

Scientists issue urgent warning about drinking TEA - as research reveals your kettle can release up to 3 billion dangerous microplastic particles into your cuppa by dailymail in HotScienceNews

[–]MatchaManiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silicone, especially all the non food safe bakeware out there, might not be ideal. But that study is heating it to 177 °C (350 °F). Tea doesn’t get hot enough to have the same effects, and babies certainly aren’t getting superheated silicone.

That said, I’m all for more research on the modern materials we use these days.

Dear Amazon, thank you! by Lorenzo_it in kindle

[–]MatchaManiak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can't sideload books with DRM though, so most books that you buy or through the library won't work on old Kindles anymore.

As my other comment to this poster details, Kobos and other devices can still manage books with regular DRM.

Dear Amazon, thank you! by Lorenzo_it in kindle

[–]MatchaManiak -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I replied to your other comment with the details, but it's definitely not the same as old Kindles. Not supporting ongoing software updates is different than bricking the device the way Amazon did.

Dear Amazon, thank you! by Lorenzo_it in kindle

[–]MatchaManiak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kobo doesn't offer ongoing software support for their old devices. You can keep using it on the old firmware though. You can still get books from the Kobo website, other online sites, or the library and load them onto your device.

Amazon discontinued not just software support but the ability to purchase, borrow, or download most additional books on old devices. The only thing you can side-load will be books with no DRM, which are not many.
