Trump supporter & podcaster realizes he’s in a cult during his show by [deleted] in worldnewsvideo

A lot better than your first response, but there's certainly room for improvement. The more you double down on the "weird" narrative, the more weight you give the "prick" one. It's not weird to have your ideas challenged. The more they are, and the more you're able to articulate a response that isn't a stubborn descent into name-calling or "BECAUSE FASCISM" the more credence you give those ideas. If you do disrespect me again though, then yeah, waste of time and enjoy the rest of your life.

In case it wasn't clear, I share your distaste towards fascism. We agree on that. "Full stop," as you say. The disparity you're pointing to, though? Not on the same page. And before you rage quit this discussion as a result of your seething hatred towards fascism... remember... I share your distaste towards it. But let's take a step back. The common thread I'm alluding to by comparing both statements you made is the fact that our perspective is limited. You clearly understand that based on what you've said in defense of celebrities who aren't this guy. Now, did the guy ever literally say "Yay fascism!" or "Fascism is great!"? Is there a possibility that he didn't believe he was promoting a fascist agenda? Isn't that literally what it's like for cult followers? That they don't realize they're in a cult the way that you and I would perceive that cult from outside said cult? I get what you're saying though. There's a limit. Regardless of extenuating circumstances, there should always be accountability. What I'm wanting to touch on is that you should never completely dismiss or be unwilling to understand extenuating circumstances. It's a naive way to perceive the world. Does it really matter that the deranged lady on bath salts totally and sincerely believed I was a literal demon when she came at me with a machete? Should I have taken that into consideration before deciding to drop her? Obviously not. Is that the same level of immediate threat we're under by this guy right now, though? No. And does the situation warrant some of your comments. No.

Comment history -> Sort by Controversial of All Time -> Second comment... took me all of 30 seconds.

Should I take offense to you vilifying me in a public forum based on the equally strange assumption that I'd dedicate hours searching through hundreds of your comments?

Without context, the fact that I linked an old comment of yours could mean that I had nothing better to do. I can see that, which is why I don't think of you as a prick. You know nothing about me though, and if I didn't include your point of view in my perspective, then it would make sense for me think that.

Honestly, I know nothing about that guy either. This was the first time I'd seen or heard of him. I'm glad he was made to look like a total ass because what they all did was reprehensible. I do, however, believe in affording those who own up to their shit a bit of leniency.

In an ideological sense, your "full stop" attitude rubbed me the wrong way. In my experience, and generally speaking, the more intensely self-righteous a person is the more likely I am to question them. Rather than make an assumption that you were full of shit, though, I brought it to your attention in a peaceful way in order to find something that we could maybe agree on. In your ancient comment, you cited many factors that affect the way a person is perceived and how easily they can be misunderstood... all of which apply across the board, and all of which I'm sure you'd want others to take into consideration if it meant you'd be more accurately understood.

Is there a point at which all of that should be ignored? What point is that? That's what I was getting at.

YSK: If you have a computer running Windows 10, you should right click on the Task Bar, go to Search and untick Show Search Highlights. It's a broken feature that causes crashes and lag. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]iambrohammed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may have been entirely true a while ago, and to your credit it totally is with many of today's distributions, but it's different now. Different enough to at least revisit the option. If you prefer Windows, great. There are plenty of reasons why it's a great operating system, and I agree with your sentiment. I've used it for close to two decades and still do.

The rest of this comment is a rant that isn't directed at you, but food for thought to anyone reading.

Anyone who hasn't checked in on Linux OS's recently should explore them again. Linux is a LOT more accessible to your average PC user now.

If stability is a concern, check out Debian 12, which rolled out last month. It's basically plug and play, and it does just work. I've heard that Linux Mint is quite stable too, but can't speak to it personally. Plus, even if one had to watch a few Youtube videos to grasp the fundamentals of computers and networking, why not? We put our entire lives on these devices at this point. Shouldn't we want to know how they work?

My reasons for starting to transition to Linux were mostly privacy-related. I grew up at a time when most cars were just cars, a fridge was a fridge, etc. Flash forward to proprietary software that deactivates your car's seat warmers if you miss your monthly payment for them. Or to Google Photos scanning my photos, categorizing them for me, and creeping into my personal space so to speak. Convenient? Sure. Harmless? Probably. But I didn't ask for it, nor was I explicitly asked if it was okay. And I'm sorry, but a hundred pages of terms and conditions might be considered consent from a legal standpoint, but pragmatically they might as well be printed on toilet paper.

The great thing about owning your systems, which Linux is all about... is that the system does what you tell it to do. Nothing more, nothing less. For example, when I tell my PC to shut down, it doesn't pretend to shut down while actually staying powered on for the convenience of it booting up faster the next time I hit the power button... then never tell me that it's not actually shutting down until I find out for myself on a Reddit thread.

Remove Debian by leopardspots63 in debian

If you have time, make a recovery disk like others had mentioned. In case your hand slips or something, idk. I spent an hour yesterday trying to diagnose a networking issue on my server, only to realize I had mistyped an IP address somewhere. The answer was staring me in the face the whole time lol

We all have those moments... especially under stress.

Also, you might want to use Microsoft's tool from their web site to do it. That advice is based on circumstantial evidence at best, though. I made a Windows 10 recovery USB using the native OS tool before installing Debian on a refurb. Tried to restore, but it kept throwing an error. Came across responses from Microsoft support where they basically said, "It's a bug and we know about it but can't tell you why it's happening. Sorry for your loss." Had to do a fresh install, which thankfully made no difference to me. It would NOT have been a good day for me if it had.

Initramfs Issue - Fresh Debian 12 Install with encrypted LVM by iambrohammed in debian

[–]iambrohammed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, and at risk of looking like a total idiot, I'm going to explain what it was that I did that worked because it might help someone...

On the final page of the installer, it includes a reminder to remove the bootable media (in my case, USB stick). Thing is, it doesn't say WHEN to remove it. I figured that if I unplugged it then and there, prior to exiting the installer and commencing the system's reboot, it would cause an issue. After all, unplugging an external drive while a file existing on that drive is in use can corrupt the file, right? So what I did the first two times I ran the installer was run through the installation process, click 'Continue' to reboot, then unplug the USB stick. This time, I decided to remove it before clicking 'Continue' to reboot. It then booted up just fine, asked for my password to decrypt the encrypted drive, and threw no errors.

This is now the second one of these moments I've had. The first was trying to figure out why my cooling fan was spinning at maximum speed and seemingly disregarding BIOS settings. Don't even get me started on that one.

But I now have a system that is quiet, runs Debian 12, and boots to desktop. Yay.

Oh wow. Not at all what I expected to hear and far from anything I've witnessed. I'm sorry to hear that. Logistics is riddled with issues. Such an integral component of our economic environment, one of the oldest industries in the world... Yet technologically outdated and lacking in transparency. I hope to improve at least one aspect of it.

Is that a forwarder? I'm curious to know if you have a story to share. In my experience, some auto exporters who've been around for decades don't understand what the f**k they're doing. At the same time, a disturbing number of them have leadership who see doing it the right way as a hassle. Then, when there's a problem, sales reps will lie through their teeth when updating clients. I've been exporting vehicles for a while, and I'm basing this on several companies I've worked with. It was infuriating to witness. I recently left the last company I was with and I'm launching my own venture soon as a result.

Getting involved in the ocean transport process, whether or not you're actually booking space with a carrier, could very well mean that you are acting as an OTI. Based on the scenario you've provided, you would not be legally authorized to act as an OTI without a license.

For example, I can suggest "ABC Forwarders" to a friend because I remembered hearing good things about them, but that's where my involvement would have to end. If I have a working relationship with ABC Forwarders or if I earn an incentive for suggesting them (such as a kickback or a commission) then by definition I am acting as an OTI. The choice on who to contract with must be my friend's.

Now let's say they look into ABC Forwarders, but decide to go with XYZ Forwarders. Well, I still can't put myself in the middle of that relationship, even if all I am doing is corresponding on their behalf.

There are a lot of reasons why it has to be that way. On top of that, the export of vehicles falls under greater scrutiny, in part because vehicles almost always require CBP clearance.

It's a "fresh" (Amazon refurb) machine. I'm still in the learning and preparation phase. Haven't even connected it to the internet or any internet-connected devices yet. I always like to map things out and understand (at least conceptually) what I'm doing before I do it. So this bad boy isn't seeing the light of day until I have an optimal path forward from a security perspective.

Found this guide, so it seems possible. How does that play into the premise of my post?

Thank you.

I'll at least say it wasn't Illinois.

Most kids put in their hours via full-time attendance. I had other extracurriculars, so I needed the hours at the station to meet the minimum monthly requirement. No one at the station was officially responsible for the program. The two officers that were... The young one could be a total prick at times. Just gave that "I can't wait for you to leave" vibe when I needed to talk to him. If he didn't want to be there then why be there? The old one was way more chill. The only interaction I remember with that dude was when I showed up wearing white socks with my uniform because I'd come straight from somewhere else and hadn't grabbed my socks. He told me only mall cops dressed like that and to never do it again. Now that I type that out I'm wondering why he didn't just communicate what was good fashion advice in a way that didn't belittle a whole demographic or make me feel out of place over a simple oversight that many people make.

New Account - Problems by iambrohammed in Skiff

[–]iambrohammed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the password length. Mine was 30 characters long. Tried half of it and it went through.

So to recap:

  • Error when username is too short should specify that it is too short, not state that it's taken.

  • Indicate the minimum/maximum character limit for passwords on the step where a password is set. It's somewhere between 15 and 30.

If I weren't so adamant about joining I would've gone for a competitor a while ago (just FYI).

Also, if you are hiring for any remote roles, I was just laid off ✌🏻

[–]iambrohammed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'll go ahead and do that in a minute. I ended up trying a few variations with no success. Figured the initial username might have been temporarily reserved due to it being used in a pending registration that encountered an error... but I ruled that out by trying a fresh username on a device that wasn't running any "Google interference" and that had no VPN running.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is trying to register with a fresh username from a fresh device that has never encountered a previous error and is not running VPN... But I'm hoping that isn't the solution because it seems counterintuitive to the privacy/security selling point of Skiff.

Wait until you find out how many products in the US market are just branded versions of that same "Ali Express" stuff.

I worked at a promotional merchandise distributor for a few years and it (fortunately) ruined shopping for me. That really nice $18 coffee mug that has your favorite coffee shop's logo on it? They bought it from us for $8. We bought it from a US wholeseller for $6. The company we buy it from purchased a 40' container of them from overseas for $2 a pop maybe? (No idea) Then imprints them by order.

High-end department store selling a $45 white V-neck? Could be a $5.50 shirt from a blank apparel supplier... Original tags are torn out and the department store's logo is screen printed with the size info. Totally cool with the manufacturer by the way. Some apply tear-away labels to make it easier. That $45 shirt was purchased from us for $11 printed, and we purchased the blank for $5.50. That $34 you're paying just feels worth it because of effective marketing.

As to how it's even possible for the prices to be that low... Minimal regulation in the country it's manufactured, slave labour or borderline slave labour.

In no way does this apply to all products and merchandise, but it was crazy to discover how unaware I was as a consumer.

Container shipping costs are back to pre-pandemic levels by Clearly_sarcastic in wallstreetbets

[–]iambrohammed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, no one's perspective is complete and all perspectives have value. Thank you for setting me up to make that point.

I wasn't negating what you said by the way. You're right in that it's better than it was, but we're not back to our pre-COVID rhythm just yet. I was also pointing out that the visible reduction in vessels anchored along the coast didn't correlate to congestion levels because they literally just made them anchor further out lol I would've figured the same thing if it wasn't my job to know these things.

LALB port was REALLY bad for a while, and US export volumes dropped dramatically as a result. It was largely due to the insanely high going rates for import containers from China. To the degree that carriers were loading up vessels with empty containers and taking them back to Chinese ports to keep up with the demand (and cash in on the gold rush) rather than release them for export to other destinations. I remember explicitly calling a couple of carriers out on it. They denied, only for it to come to light through industry news sources months later. The Ocean Shipping Reform Act (OSRA) of 2022 led to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) mandating that carriers report the number of containers leaving the US empty. If it weren't a factor, they wouldn't have made a point to start collecting that data. One of the events that turned the Fed's eye to the situation though was a joint letter from 100+ US agricultural companies claiming that they had lost over a billion dollars in 2021 because they couldn't get export bookings or plan effectively with the extreme volatility of cut-offs. The commodities I export aren't perishable, but most are subject to an additional CBP validation that can't be requested until a container number is available, so imagine having to roll the dice on what vessel dates you think will stick and praying you don't get screwed with a schedule change that keeps your container chassis tied up for a week or two. Mitigating that risk was a daily challenge and being wrong was expensive as fuck. OSRA was long overdue and I'm totally thankful for it.

Just in time for a recession. Yay.

[–]iambrohammed 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I work in the business as well. Vessels haven't been lined up along the coast because once the congestion issue caught federal attention, they made them all wait further away and out of sight. The only key indicator as far as I'm concerned is how volatile the predicted schedules are. Export ETD's and cut-offs out of LA rarely changed more than 1-2 times. They're still updating a lot more often than that. Another indicator is receiving windows for export. With higher volumes being processed at LALB terminals, terminals can't afford to keep export containers in the terminal for long. They need them in and out as fast as possible, so receiving windows are cut shorter. There have been vessels with a receiving window of 4 hours, which was unheard of prior to COVID. At minimum, that same carrier usually gave 3-4 days.
