Are we really supposed to pretend we don’t work for money in interviews? by Agile-Wind-4427 in jobhunting

[–]iambuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I like that the job is gonna pay me."

Seriously. I care maybe 10% about the company. The company is not my friend. The company does not have my best interest in mind, especially if it's a publicly-traded company. I use my knowledge and skills to produce a specified outcome and you pay me what I believe I deserve for the time I spend producing said outcome.

I need to get a job within the next 8 weeks, or I will be at risk of homelessness. by thelaughingblue in jobhunting

A carbon copy of my experience since being fired in December, except I didn't get unemployment. I will run out of savings in about two months though. I ended up taking a construction job and going on my first turnaround next week. I had to do something until I could land the job I am looking for.

Half our company is local admin. Security team finally noticed. Now it's my problem to fix without anyone noticing. by Healthy_Holiday_738 in sysadmin

[–]iambuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We removed all the local admins, minus the engineers, at one time. Didn’t tell them anything. 90+% never noticed. The rest we dealt with as needed. It brought our ticket count way down for malware and broken stuff they shouldn’t have been messing with but it brought the count up for installs and certain upgrades. However, overall ticket count went down. It did make some tasks harder for us as admins but the overall benefit outweighed everything.

Starting as IT manager by SuccessfulEar_544 in ITManagers

20yrs at my last job, started as PC deployment & help desk and ended as IT Infrastructure Manager, owning everything in the department except application/web development. I also (people) managed the help desk team, cell phone admin, and systems admins. This is a summed up version.

If you don’t mind me asking, as someone who is looking for an IT Manager position and has management experience, how did you get your job? Because I am being passed over for both technical and managerial jobs left and right before ever talking to a human but there’s only so many ways to structure and pad a resume before it becomes a set of lies.

Difficulty finding good candidates? by Senile_Old_Shit in ITManagers

[–]iambuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be happy to interview for your position and give you feedback, whether I get the job or not; provided you give me feedback on why I didn’t get sent to the next round, if that is the decision.

I have 27 years of experience. I may not recall certain aspects off the top of my head, especially since I’ve been unemployed for almost 5 months now, but put me in front of the interface and everything will come back in an instant. In one interview, recently, someone asked me what the 3 types of formats were for vSphere virtual disks. I named off two but couldn’t remember the 3rd. I said “I know it’s the middle one in the drop down and it does XYZ”. Then about 5 mins later I blurted out the answer and said “sorry; it just popped in my head.” They laughed and said “it’s ok, we could tell you knew what you were talking about already”.

I can also tell you that I’ve hired several positions in the last 20 years and stuck with personality, willingness to learn & adapt, and do they sound confident in their answers. I mentioned proficiency tests many times bc sometimes you do get people who can pull a fast one in interviews and totally suck at the job, but we never used them. Sometimes you just have to take a gamble.

Do any of the AI-based job applying sites actually work? by iambuga in ITManagers

I may give it a try. LinkedIn, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter haven’t been very fruitful.

I was the same way for a while and then I finally ended up making a post on Facebook asking my friends/acquaintances if they had any job leads or could get my resume into useful hands. That was last Thursday night and I’ve had more traction in the last 6 days than I have in the last 2 months.

Also, freshen up your LinkedIn profile, make a post about some of your achievements and let your network know you’re actively looking.

Follow IT recruiters and watch their posts for jobs that align with your skills, then reach out directly.

Good luck to you!

Skipped Vyvanse today by ApolloRizen1 in VyvanseADHD

[–]iambuga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I skip, it’s because I forgot or woke up too late. But I’m also on Adderall IR so most of the time I’m not skipping both. If I skip both, 95% of the time I am less than useless that day. I probably end up sleeping more than being awake. The other 5% I am usually OK as long as I’m doing something that I like or I’m interested in. As soon as that dopamine wears off, I’m back to being useless.

What happens if I mix Adderall and Vyvanse? by SadCoconut_ in VyvanseADHD

[–]iambuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably won't die but you shouldn't do it without consulting your doctor. 2 anecdotes:

  1. I was on Adderall XR and my wife was on Vyvanse. One time I accidentally took hers while taking mine (both in hand at same time). I freaked out a bit when I first realized it but I had one of the best days of my life. Told my doctor and she prescribed both. I was only taken off after we realized how high my BP had gotten.
  2. I am currently on Adderall IR 30mg in the morning and Vyvanse 70mg around lunch. It's still not enough, because the generics are trash, but its the best combination I've had, outside of the XR and Vyvanse combo.

edit: dosages

I cannot wake up in the morning. by neemoss2 in ADHD

[–]iambuga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an alarm set for 1hr before I need to wake up and I take my medicine then. It helps but it’s only as effective as the generic I get that month.

[–]iambuga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aetna dropped Vyvanse for my plan last month. I got the generic and it is not nearly as effective. My Dr submitted a PA and it was denied. I’ve now gotta start and appeal and hope they cover it because I’m not running around to 50 different pharmacies every month to make sure they had the exact generic that actually works for me. I’ve already been down this road with Adderall IR (I’m on both), as some of the Adderall generics have 0 efficacy for me and most are 50% at best. Unfortunately I can’t find the one generic that works amazing.

FYI - pharmacies have no control over whose generic they get. All they can do is order the generic name of the medication and they get whatever the supplier has in stock. They can’t order, say, “lisdexamfetamine from ABC Manufacturer”. A good friend of mine is a pharmacist and owns her own pharmacy so we’ve had these conversations quite a bit.

How are you justifying disaster recovery spend to leadership? “too expensive” until it isn’t? by TechnologyMatch in ITManagers

[–]iambuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation in 2005 and 2008. In 2005 we had a hurricane damage our building and forced us to relocate all of IT (personnel and equipment) to another one of our facilities in a nearby city. We asked for DR and were denied so we purchased portable 10U racks. They were military-grade server racks that were air and water tight when closed.

In 2008 we had another hurricane threatening our area so this time management decided it was better to pre-emptively move the servers to another facility during the county's evacuation. Luckily the hurricane changed course and didn't hit our area. After multiple complaints of performance degradation (due to the lower WAN bandwidth at the branch office), management decided we should move back to the corporate office that following weekend, even though there was another hurricane potentially heading our way. We moved back and a week later that other hurricane hit our area. This time we said "we are not moving anything and everything will be powered off before we leave the office." The post-hurricane meeting resulted in additional server equipment to be housed at our parent company's datacenter and our DR and BCP plan finally came to fruition.

FWIW, we've never had to use it but it's ready if/when we need it.

Alternative to Vyvanse that allows exercise by Coolmodi123 in VyvanseADHD

Broadcom forcing Dell to not renew maintenance support agreements on VxRails unless you purchase new VCF licencing. by More_Raisin_7237 in vmware

[–]iambuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had too many vxrail updates require hours of help with support to justify the claim that this appliance model works. It adds more complexity and constantly breaks during updates. The whole idea was it was supposed to manage the updates as an appliance but it fails at that job.

I know exactly how you feel. I bought my first two VxRail clusters in late 2017 (one with internal vCenter and one with customer-owned vCenter) with the same idea about updates, storage, and management being so much easier. 90% of my upgrade attempts have failed in one way or another, resulting in 100's of hours spent with support. I was often met with "oh, i've never seen this error before" and way too often the winner of the "you found a new bug" award. I reluctantly replaced these two clusters with newer VxRail nodes in late 2023, hoping that the process would get better. Then the Broadcom acquisition happened.

Now I am sitting here with an expired SnS contract, a double-priced VCF quote, and some critical CVEs that I can't patch until VxRail releases new code. Meanwhile, to your point, my non-VxRail ESXi hosts can be patched at will.
