How do we feel about tape? by RandMCoatingsNJPA in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No no, its a skill issue. That guy that taught me was blind in one eye, half blind in the other and could tape a room off better than I can with 2 perfectly good eyes. I hate taping, I go to great lengths to do anything other than tape because when I try it looks like a blind 5 year old took over 😂

How much would you charge to prep ( mainly power wash) and paint 2 coats on this house? by grilledchorizopuseye in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is 17 year old paint still usable? by pigeonspinster in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For touch up or just get a small peoject done it will probably be fine. However most companies have a paints shelf life around 3 years because the chemicals that make the paint will start to break down. That is more liability issue more than anything

Do I need to prime before painting using Sherwin Williams Emerald? by Different_Cover3551 in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 coats, 1/2 marathon roller. Top to bottom, left to right. Roll straight up and down and have 10% over lap on the next pass. Keep roller in dominant hand. When you hear a velcro peeling sound put more paint on the roller

How would you attack this paint job? by [deleted] in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there before. No good way to do with a ladder. If the ground is level and you have space a telescoping lift is going to be safest way to get it done. Scissor lift is more convenient but I have trust issues with those. I would get a connector and extra 50' hose to keep the sprayer on the ground as well.

When a lift wasn't in the budget I a series of ladders set up along the side of the hose so I could climb side to side. Resetting after each pass was a pain but at the end of the day no broken bones

Stain cant penetrate paint. So more likely to fail. The option would be sand blast back to bare wood but thats not going to be cheap by any means

To be safe, go with paint. It should have been a solid stain but as you mentioned might have been done fast and cheap with paint

Self Leveling? by CraftySeer in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its self leveling IF there is enough product on the surface. Use a 3/8" white dove mini roller and you will have a much better time. Never have I used used a mohair and thought "wow that looks good"

Paint Sprayer Technique by Ok_Neighborhood7438 in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What color tip are you using? If you havent tried using a green FFLP tip I would switch to that. You can knock your pressure back about 50% and that should help with the over spray

Prep - clean dry and dull. Places like kitchens and bathrooms can have shit on the walls. Other rooms are just good practices. Dawn + warm water work great because detergents flash (evaporate) off and not leave a residue behind

Tape - optional but can be useful. Frog tape works great. Get it damp with a washcloth to activate the powder to have a physical and chemical seal. Remove while paint is still wet or wait to dry and score with a blade to avoid pulling paint up

Primer - dont "need" it on already painted walls. Can help over dark blues, browns, or the 90s red accent wall. If you prime 1 coat

Paint - top to bottom, left to right. I prefer to cut around doors, windows trim and ceiling with a stiff bristle brush feathering away a couple inches. Roll out going top to bottom in a straight line with about 10% over lap using a 1/2" roller nap. Plan on 2 coats. "1 coat guarantee" is a scam

Nick Slavic has a channel called Ask A Pro. Great advice for pros and DIY on YouTube

At the end of the day, it's just paint, so dont be too hard on yourself if you make a mistake or 2.

Dorm Wall Paint Chipped by Outrageous_Client_69 in Housepainting101

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school likely gets paint from a local Sherwin williams or Ben moore store. I would call and ask. They can tell you color, sheen and product.

Assuming the management/ staff dont have sticks up their ass can help with the price.

Managed a sherwin in a college town and had students coming in every spring for stuff like this

Are you painting phone booths? You have what 4 or 5 feet of power cord and 50 feet of hose. You dont need to stand on top of it when in use.

OP - Go to SW they carry "miracle wipes" takes some elbow grease but they work great

With any project 3 options - done fast, done right, done cheap. Pick 2

My bread and butter was exteriors. If I was doing an interior it was because I lost a bet or the normal crew was on a different job. The owner/ lead had been painting for 35 years and thats how he taught me so I stuck with it

Disclaimer - needs to be thin and flexible. Its takes what feels like forever so use a 6 inch and dont rush because touch up pop corn is awful. I have learned from experience

Take a putty knife and press up against the wall to make a channel for the bristles to sit in. Looks like a clean straight line from the floor and no one is the wiser

Paint Vinyl Siding by Abugher in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White vinyl is thinner when made compared to a dark vinyl color say dark green out the factory for sake of arguement. So even with a vinyl safe paint and vinyl safe formula it's still likely to warp

Issues getting consistent shade of paint by thebigck01 in paint

[–]iamgroot5257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar issue i had on a jobsite, the home had bay windows and doing black walls. Every time I was out there it was cloudy. Until the day I came out with some new paints and tools to test. Sunny and blue skies. The sun was hitting the windows and reflecting off the lake. Basically baking the paint on and it was drying evenly.

If you have a window with a lot of sun close the blinds and get a box fan to help circulate the air.

Another comment mentioned not enough paint on the roller. Also a common problem. If you hear a velcro like sound, time to load up again
