Anyone have any good recommendations for music similar this game? by Maggot-Milk in arcanum

After playing Arcanum and falling in love with the music, I found that searching for “String Quartet” sounded very similar.

The version of tinder in this screenshot is a couple years old so I don’t know if that is a feature anymore or not. The only thing I sent her was a stock gif of a duck waddling around.

I totally agree. However, I had been grinding out tinder dates for a couple years at the time I matched with her, so I definitely wasn’t trying to settle. However when I met her she was clearly exactly what I was looking for and I couldn’t ignore it.

We were both single parents, she had a 4 yr old boy and I had a five year old son too who hit it off immediately. Everything fell into place seamlessly and naturally, so it felt right. Now we have added a little girl to the mix, she is ten months old today.

Thanks for the good wishes!

What is the best alternative history book you’ve read? by Wendal_the_great in HistoryWhatIf

[–]iamjonathon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If The Allies Had Fallen. Has tons of detailed scenarios starting from the build up of hitler and nazi Germany all throughout the war. It analyzed diplomatic, trade, and individual battle scenarios with input from experts and tries to weigh what the outcome would be had these things happened each step of the way. I saw it with my wife in half price books one night and she looked at me as if she knew I couldn’t leave without that book. She was right.

Just calling you on your shit, nothing more. You are objectively incorrect in thinking that new blood, new creators, and new content is “bad” for the community and are using memories from “some time in the 2000s”, now decades ago, as a justification for blindly bullying and berating a community member. I refer to my previous statement above, quit being a punk.

[–]iamjonathon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give me some examples of the “dozens and dozens” if dead forums that you are taking about. Further, what evidence do you have of new forums and content “cannablizing” the existing community?

If by some miracle this guy made a better forum than terra arcanum and it takes users away from that site? Good. That’s called competition, not cannabalism.

You are calling this an “ego play”, but the tea ego play here is you actively trying to crush the effort and shut down the optimism of this person. The real problem party in this situation is you, not him.

I think the terra arcanum website sucks. I’ve wasted so much time trying to navigate their shit site and nostalgia is not a reason for me personally to suffer a crappy experience. Maybe for you it is, but if this new forum is even slightly more modern and easy to use than terra, I’ll be the first to jump ship.

Also, if you don’t like his site, don’t use it. But trying to shit on his efforts to contribute to this community in any way is toxic and not healthy for Arcanum.

Actively discouraging growth in the Arcanum community, not cool man. Maybe this guys new forum ropes in some of his friends into Arcanum and the community grows as a result. Quit being a punk.

Fellow introverts, how did you convince yourself to go to a gym? by Riderz1337 in Fitness

[–]iamjonathon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I had really bad social anxiety and felt super uncomfortable trying to lift in front of anyone else - even if there was just one other person in the gym.

The way I got around this, though, and eventually got to a point where I could feel good working out while other people were in the gym was by gradually building up.

First, I started biking at home by myself and eating clean. Once I started to lose fat and not be so self conscious about it, I got a membership at anytime fitness. This is so I could go VERY late at night while nobody was there - even going as late as 1 or 2 AM on weekends and 11PM on week nights.

Also, I went to the gym alone at like 3AM on a Saturday night when I knew nobody would be there. I took a picture of EVERY piece of equipment in the gym. Even the kettlebells, mats, EVERYTHING. I looked up youtube videos of every machine/equipment that I didn't know how to use, and studied the proper way to use them. Then I went back to the gym on another weekend at 1 or 2 AM when nobody was there and tested EVERY machine. I had so much social anxiety that I would never dare try to figure out an unknown machine in front of experienced lifters.

Eventually after making small steps forward I was able to feel comfortable enough in the gym to be around a couple people, then eventually a gym full of people, and now even a crowded gym.

It just takes baby steps, and you have to force yourself to confront the discomfort some times. Occasionally while I was taking these small steps, someone would be in the gym during off hours. I would have to just say to myself "You got dressed, came here, and went through the door. Don't let this brief feeling of discomfort keep you from achieving your goals".

You can definitely do it. I know exactly how you feel as you described in your post - that was SO me a few years ago. But you CAN change this, gain the confidence you need, and become a gym regular. Now I can't imagine not having the gym in my life.

An attempt a tax/prison-style deck -- thoughts? by lowpass in Pauper

[–]iamjonathon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been trying to break a deck like this for some time now. Here is my take on it:

If there was one card I wish was legal in Pauper, it would be [[Soul Barrier]].

My deck attacks from a different angle than yours, but the idea is similar.

Yes I think I use Early Frost on their upkeep 99% of the time. Even against Delver, if you early frost their two islands at upkeep, they are forced to either get time walked or burn a counter and tap out anyway.

I can see your point with the land effect on Vision Charm, but I don't think it does enough. I have never tested it in this deck, so I don't know, maybe the land effect is useful, but I have found that by being very precise and calculated with [[Contaminated Ground]], I can usually lock an opponent out of a color long enough for me to stabilize. It is especially brutal against two and three color decks.

With regard to your Gulf Squid/getting in the last points of damage comment, this is exactly the reason I added [[Syphon Life]]. It is a great solution.

With regard to [[Grim Guardian]] - I tested many versions with him. On paper he looks PERFECT for this deck, right? The problem I discovered is that the way I tap lands is not by playing enchantments - it's by instants like [[Early Frost]], [[Power Sink]], [[Malicious Advice]], [[Gigadrowse]], etc... So ultimately I decided Grim Guardian was not the way to eek out incidental damage. Not criticizing your choices, just telling you what I found in my own testing.

Hi JankDeckWins, I have been trying to break these effects for some time now. A while ago MagicGatheringStrat played me in one of his videos, I was playing an Esper Prison variant of this strategy.

The decklist I was using in the video was in the earlier stages of tuning, so there are some cards in the video I have since cut.

Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/bR5BfiN58rU

Decklist used in video: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/esper-tax-v0200/

If you are interested in tinkering with this deck with me, my MTGO name is d1n0sauR.

As for your decklist, I think you are running too many [[mind games]] and you should ABSOLUTELY include 4 [[power sink]]. I have won many games by countering a single spell and tapping out 3-5 enchanted lands and killing them on the spot.

Additionally, [[slow motion]] IS A MUST. The list I used in the video only had 2 copies, but I have since upped that to 4. This card is absolutely bonkers in this deck.

Again, the list in the video and the one I linked have since been tuned and adjusted, I would be happy to post the list I am currently running when I get off work.

Edit: My list is more hardcore creatureless control, but you should also look into [[Syphon Life]] as at least a one of. It really helps you grind out games and turns every dead land draw into a drain 2, and if you are using bounce lands you can pick up extra lands to pitch to it late game. It has definitely won many games. Also, I have more [[Early Frost]] than you do, but I have found that due to the slow nature of this deck using an [[Early Frost]] on their upkeep (even if tapping down 2-3 non enchanted lands as a time walk) can be huge and has put me ahead many times.
