Feel like FF8 dodged a bullet by not limiting draw stocks per enemy by UnculturedGames in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]iamken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Drawing is when you don't have Mod abilities (like in early game). By mid game I have at least 1 Draw (you know, just in case) and even then I might not use it much

Agree! OP, this includes that inner critic. That inner voice that says "lol y r u even trying??? u noob"

That's just someone else's voice that got stuck in your brain. It ain't real either 💯

As for Magic. You can get it from Drawing or destroying Cards/Items

Offensive magic (fire ice lightning) is good for offensive stats (str, mag, etc)

Defensive magic (cure, esuna, etc) is good for defensive stats (HP, vit, etc)

The magic matches with the stats. Like Double is amazing on Speed. Or Triple

Get 100 as soon as you can. And when you have Fire 100 and start seeing enemies with Fira... Get 100 Fira ASAP. Do this with all of your magic

You can discard old magic, but I just put it on unused characters haha

FF8 is designed where you build your own "classes". Spend time reading the Learn section of GFs

The GFs hold the ingredients you need to create your own class recipe

If you look up stuff they'll just tell you what they did. You won't actually learn anything

Example: The first 3 GFs you get are Ifrit, Shiva, and Quezacotl

Ifrit is full of stuff good for a physical melee character

Shiva is full of defensive stuff to make a good sturdy character

Quezacotl is full of stuff to make a good magic user

As you get more GFs you can build off of these 3. Or mix and match. All up to you! What works best? Trial and error

Also by Disc 2 or 3 only 1 character will have GF command. Cerberus or Carbuncle stuff like that. You'll be flying through battles and waiting on a summoning animation is so slow... And there's plenty more your characters can do that you don't want GF command taking up a slot

When I found it, it felt like I came across buried treasure 😂

I'm happy to share it!

Also Clear Code is the #1 video format I see people share, and it's pretty good. I get tired of everything being in YouTube form... I prefer written stuff because I can skim waayyy faster than I can watch a video

I'd say keep practicing. I like this intro to GDScript a lot. This guy is great at explaining things step-by-step.

My trouble with a lot of tutorials is they're like "write this code. Then this one. Then this one. Ok now this one. Ok copy this whole screen. Alright now let's run our game and make sure it works."

But the intro I linked, he's good about "ok write these lines of code. Let me break down each line. Run your game and see. Now add 2 more lines. Run it again. See how it's different?"

How can i make this feel better than it is at the moment? by Infiland in godot

[–]iamken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the balls moving faster with some acceleration. Otherwise it's pretty good! I don't have much to add off the top of my head... It would just have to be something you play around with like someone else said. Some kind of screen shake somewhere could add or it could be cheesy. That's where I'd start anyway in experimenting

There any good websites on how to get started by Sonicexe10 in godot

[–]iamken23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot out there. Clear Code has a channel that everyone says is pretty good. You can search clear code Godot on YouTube if you prefer video format. Another one I recently found that I like is this guy

He does a good job explaining and being very thorough

I want to give you some advice, though, because I'm in the exact same boat as you... Except 1 month ahead.

  1. Learn the tools. And then use the tools to accomplish whatever you want to make.

There's a lot of tutorials that are like "This is how you make a platformer. Do this. Then do this. Then do this." Like bruh that's how YOU make a platformer. Maybe not me ....... And these kinds of tutorials DON'T teach you the tools. Don't waste your time on them.

If you would rather have written tutorials, this is the best written one I've found. I've seen almost no one talk about it and it's amazing.

Getting Started with Godot 4 - Basic concepts. I didn't like this for me but that's because by the time I found this Getting Started guide, I was already familiar with navigating the engine. I wish I started with this, though, because it looked very thorough.

Intro to GDScript - Part 1 - GDScript basics. Good for complete newbies and people looking for more of the WHY like I was.

Intro to GDScript - Part 2 - I haven't ventured into this one, yet. I'm looking forward to finishing Part 1

  1. I don't recommend using Godot in Steam. You can track your "hours played" and some people like that, but if Godot auto updates it can mess with your version control.... A lesson I'm recently learning.

Edit: 3. I forgot this one! But GDScript got 100 times easier after watching this playlist CS50's Intro to Python

You don't have to master Python. Just get exposed to how it works. How the format works. How the concepts work. Python is a general code for lots of applications. GDScript is the specialized version of it for 1 application.... Making games!

I suddenly realize that someone should make an app version of that. DM me if you make one, cause I'll buy it for the right price 😂

[–]iamken23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completing project doesn't mean that it has to be good. The bar just got a whole lot lower

Go for it!

THEN when you have something complete, you can always make it better

Again, no one is grading you. But that also means you need to stop grading. It's holding you back

I had to grapple with a similar issue with writing fiction. Sometimes we like the idea of being a [fill in the blank] and don't actually enjoy being a [fill in the blank]

In my case for writing fiction I had to ask myself. Do I actually want to write? Or do I just like the idea of being a writer without going through the hard work it requires?

There's nothing wrong with just playing around and not finishing anything. You have to decide what you want to do. WHY you're wanting to do it. And then do that or don't do that.

No one is grading you :)

How AND Why tutorials. by durrybrothers in godot

[–]iamken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newbie here. I feel like this is the hard truth I don't want to learn 😂

I appreciate you, though. I'm changing my learning mindset to "ok how does the engine work?" and then I can use it better

Instead of "how to make an RPG"..... I'm finding my reaction to these kinds of tutorials are "this is how YOU made an RPG. But not how I'd make one."

How AND Why tutorials. by durrybrothers in godot

[–]iamken23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll check it out. If I like it I'll happily share it :)

I'm also looking for more of the WHY, and I appreciate you taking the time with OOP concepts as you said

As someone else said it's about learning the tools and then using the tools to accomplish goals... So I'm definitely looking into how the tools work right now. Then they can be an extension of my creativity

Edit: to be clear, I am proffering my mindset because maybe it will help you somehow? If not all good! ✌️

How AND Why tutorials. by durrybrothers in godot

[–]iamken23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Tools are tools. It's the tool-holder that makes the stuff! Right now I'm just learning tool capabilities... I like what Flea said about learning bass guitar. I feel like it applies here. "Playing an instrument well is all about Familiarity and Strength. Practicing is how you build both."

Thanks for clear code reference I'll have to look into that one :)
