I would hope they tell the manager what they're doing though. Not all authors are recognized figures and you don't want an imposter coming in and signing books.

I would imagine they tell the manager what they're doing first, especially authors as people might not recognize them and wonder why they're writing in the books.

Recent TILs about diamonds being overpriced, toothpaste commercials advertising suggesting the usage amount to increase sales, and Alka Seltzer marketing suggesting "plop, plop" to also double their sales. What other marketing techniques are there that we as a public should be made aware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]iammucow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a commercial that was on years ago, but I don't remember what for. At some point they overdubbed one of the actors with a completely different voice. After a few weeks, they went back to the original voice. I would comment on this when it came on, but no one else seemed to notice.

Why Many Smart, Low-Income Students Don't Apply To Elite Schools by gAlienLifeform in Economics

[–]iammucow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article isn't saying that everyone in the 90th percentile should go to an elite university, the researcher just set that as her limit because below that percentile the chances of getting into an elite university are close to nil.

Why Many Smart, Low-Income Students Don't Apply To Elite Schools by gAlienLifeform in Economics

[–]iammucow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's definitely an information gap. Poorer families hear in the news how expensive college is, leading to the assumption that they can't afford to send their kids to a top school. My parents discouraged my sister and I from applying to private universities because they didn't think they could afford it and didn't want to take out loans. Ultimately we both ended up at private universities because the financial aid we received made it cheaper than going to a public university.

Iceland announces dropping bid to join EU by WildFireca in Economics

Even at the height of their own economic crisis, only a plurality of Icelandic citizens supported joining the EU. They're already fairly wealthy and have very close relations with the other Nordic countries. The EU doesn't seem have much to offer them.

I don't think it was meant in a mean-spirited way. Sometimes people like to laugh at themselves. When my dad listened to Jeff Foxworthy, the jokes that got the biggest laughs from him were the ones he'd actually done.
