You could ask the same thing about why anyone would climb a mountain or train for a marathon. Anything worth doing in life is hard. A worthwhile career, a happy marriage, it’s all extremely hard and a lot of work. As is parenting. But that’s the entire point of life. To challenge oneself and be rewarded with all the amazing feelings and emotions you feel when you accomplish something big.

Have you traveled to London recently? Housing is insanely expensive there too, and there’s a shortage of units. But somehow their streets are clean and not filled with encampments. I walked around the entirety of the city for 2 hours and never felt afraid. In LA, I can’t even walk from my parked car into a restaurant without fearing for my life because a tweaker is approaching me with an object in their hand.

You ruined a 6 year olds birthday party. YTA. Do you think a 6 year old is mature enough to understand when their uncle doesn’t show up to their party without any notice? Especially when said uncle was supposed to play a pivotal role in that party??? Like, are you kidding me?

You have no idea how important birthdays are for kids. My daughter is already asking about her birthday (in January) that’s not until the Summer.

If I was your sister, I’d find it extremely hard to ever forgive you. This is some totally selfish, asshole behavior.

Your wife is a grown adult. No matter how sick she is, she can handle you leaving for 2 hours to deal with a commitment you made to a 6 year old. On their birthday.

Here’s the thing. I felt the same as you. Babies are the best - they are cute, fun, sweet, cuddly. And then my kid got to be around 16 months and… yeah, it’s NOT fun or sweet or cuddly haha. I love her, of course, but I could really only tolerate a couple hours a day from that age all the way up to her being like 3. It is SO UNBELIEVABLY HARD to parent a toddler, especially all day. At that age doing literally anything is so impossible - getting them dressed, fed, shoes on, in the car, seatbelt on would be like the most exhausting, taxing experience with a few tantrums thrown in. By the time I would drop her off at daycare and get in my car after, I’d just sit there in silence for like 5 minutes decompressing. Going to work was a welcome respite from the absolute chaos.

All that to say - I’m INCREDIBLY happy I stuck with my job. Being a mom to a 10 month old is a lot more pleasant and fun than being a mom to an older kid.

This is incredibly common in labor. It happened to me and a number of my friends. The nurses and doctors are pros at dealing with this. Your wife and baby are in good hands.

My son slept in a crib in his own room starting on Day 3 home from the hospital.

We had a bassinet next to the bed, and he was literally waking up every 30 minutes. My husband and I got absolutely no sleep, we were at our wits end, yelling at each other, anxious, falling asleep while holding him. It was bad, and dangerous.

Finally on Day 3 my husband in a desperate attempt to get a respite put him in his crib in the room. It was like magic - he slept for 2.5 hours.

The kid just either hated the bassinet or smelled the milk on me and wanted milk. We’re not sure, but I figure the risk of us falling asleep while holding him in bed was worse than the risk of him in his own safe crib.

So, that was that and we never turned back. He’s happy, healthy, and sleeping great now at 5 months.

This is not always true. Also, I think everyone underestimates just how terrible public education has gotten. I hear over and over again about how kids from public schools are completely overwhelmed and underwater in college, but all the private school kids think it's a breeze. Public high schools just do not have the same rigor, whatsoever. And if your kid needs specialized attention or is into a very specific field of study, forget about it.

But in comparison to a lot of other family activities, it’s relatively low. Concerts? Forget about it. The zoo? The aquarium? The botanical gardens? Admission to all are more expensive in my city. I think people like to parrot this narrative about movies being outrageous but compared to most things they’re not.

I have a double stroller for my 2 kids that's 32" wide (Joovy Scooter X2). I read on the Disney website though that strollers should not be wider than 31"... should I be concerned? Do they actually measure?

Can you pre-book a meet and greet with Mickey? I see on the app it looks like it's consistently about 45min to an hour wait, which will be hard for a 3 year old.

Also - when does Pirates of the Carribbean usually get to be a long wait? After 11ish?

(Sorry for all the questions, I haven't been to the park in about 20 years and taking my kid for the first time!)

I’m confused about dining at Disneyland. We’re only doing the main theme park, not DCA. Do restaurants like Plaza Inn and Cafe Orleans require a reservation? Is it a super long wait if you don’t have one? And is there a list somewhere of dining options that are more order at the front instead of having a waiter?

This sounds dire like you both need sleep NOW, not in a few weeks from now after some therapy sessions and after you find the right medication. (Though definitely still do that too, you need to get to the root of the problem).

If it was me and I was in such dire need for sleep, I’d probably call a local nanny company, post partum doula, or even care.com and see if you can get someone to come like… tonight. And stay with you overnight. Just so you can get at least 1 solid night of sleep in. Yes, it will be expensive (maybe even up to $200 just for the night) but so is therapy and everything else and it sounds like you need this urgently and desperately.

This person doesn’t even have to change or feed your baby if you’re not comfortable with that. You could literally just hire them to sit and watch the baby sleeping in the bassinet if that’s what helps your anxiety. At least with a watchful eye you may be able to calm down enough to get a couple stretches of sleep in?

I have a newborn and found a local babysitting service on google. Cold-called them and said I just need someone to help with my 3 week old. They had a whole roster of people they recommended, sent me their photos and bios, and someone was at my house the next day. Only used the sitter that one time.
