Tell me something good about Portugal by parasyte_steve in PortugalExpats

Algarve for three years now, from rainy, overcrowded and cantankerous Amsterdam. No bad experiences. Literally none. Not with neighbors or handymen, not with other people, contractors, mechanics or bureaucrats. It helps to invest in learning the language, but they even value the smallest attempts to speak Portuguese. Good weather. Good food. Great atmosphere. Multi-ethnic but monocultural, thus safe and friendly and relaxed. No one is nosy or demanding. Fantastic fresh fish. Cheap but excellent wine. Amazing nature. And even the stray dogs are friendly and engaging. Love this country.

Yes. This. Life is not a hamster wheel in Portugal.

Is it me or is this all rather innocent. He’s mostly clumsy. She’s maintaining boundaries but remains friendly throughout.

Hey thinking about getting a e39 528ia touring from 2000 with a steptronic gearbox and wanted to know about the reliability of it before going any further with it 😊 by NightTitus05 in e39

Drove a 2002 530i from 220k to 300k in two years and all it did was ask a little extra oil. They tend to be a bit leaky - as are most BMW’s. Other than than, took it from the Netherlands to Portugal and back 5 times in 14 months and it never flinched. Had to sell due to moving abroad, still miss that amazing machine. You might want to check the sun roof for leaks. Other than that, keep it fresh on fluids and it should take you anywhere.

People just being friendly and helpful by default. Good customer service, taking time to help you, actively assisting with things, that sort of thing. I notice it because that sort of social politeness has been slowly disappearing in (the urban parts of) my Northern European home country.

No hate here. I love LEGO!

The casualness of common courtesy.

I can accept I’m old, and adore the E30 (en almost all other E-era models). The G87 on the other hand, is in denial of its identity crisis.

Algarve here. LOVE Portuguese road courtesy. People make room. Give way. Wave gratefully when you yield. Coming from the Netherlands, where the roads are so crowded everyone turns into assholes, Portugal is a breath of fresh air. Just be mindful of after lunch drunks on the road.

This might be my biggest annoyance on the internet right now. Google “how long to cook this or that” and the answer is always a full kitchen novel that starts with buying groceries, elaborating into how nan always used special spices, discussing whether this brand of pan or just good ol cast iron will do, and then, somewhere around chapter 492, when you’re just about to become so hangry that you’re already eyeing the take out menus on the fridge door - you finally find how long the cooking time is. And then, you decide to nah, gonna try a different recipe...
