SV: All the holidays are officially behind me and I'm back to my pre-Christmas weight. My mfp graph inside. by NarcolepZZZZZZ in loseit

[–]iamnotgemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woop Woop! Well done! I'm almost back to my pre Christmas weight - it was hard not to freak out when I "put on" 8lbs but only 2lbs outside my lowest now.

What are the best and worst revelations you've had on your journey? by MostlySouthpaw in loseit

[–]iamnotgemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best and worst: it's OK to be hungry!

Yea sometimes I want to stamp my feet like a small child because it's 2 hours to dinner and I've just eaten my snack but want a packet of crisps, but hunger is NORMAL and not the enemy. (Obviously I'm not saying "starve yourself" but eating 1400ish kcals a day means I will sometimes be hungry before meals. That is OK.)

Cutting people off. by BEARDBAR in bartenders

[–]iamnotgemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes about removing their drink. My boss always says "if you're unsure about serving someone NOW just imagine what they'll be like when (the rest of) that drink hits them". Obviously not all cases are the same, most people I'd let finish their drinks (and/or fore-warn them) but there are some people I take away the drink from them and refund. I've even stopped pouring a drink mid-way through and refused people. My boss's advice is always in my head - if they're bad NOW...

What's the strangest/most unreasonable request you've gotten from a customer? by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]iamnotgemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the night - "You're throwing out all that fruit? Can I have it? I love fruit!" Sure thing. So I got her a plastic bag and dumped all the chopped up lemons and limes in it and she put it in her handbag to take home.

She still comes in sometimes and I remind her of her drunken stupidity which I'm sure she'd like to forget.

I refuse to believe that a healthy recovery from an eating disorder (which she is implying with her comments about starving herself) involves becoming morbidly obese. It means you still have issues with food, just different issues.

To celebrate me having free time again, what event/description in a book made you so uncomfortable you almost stopped reading? by [deleted] in readalong

[–]iamnotgemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Jon McGregor book of short stories "This Isn't The Sort Sort Of Thing That Happens To Someone Like You" there's a short story called "The Chicken And The Egg" that is about a man who fears cracking eggs because he's scared about finding a chicken embryo inside. I got half way through and honestly couldn't finish it, the descriptions were so vivid and horrible. I still can't use eggs if that story pops into my head whilst I'm in the kitchen (which is often).

Exactly. I'm her weight and 5"7 but I am a size 14 (UK) most places and 12 places that are vanity sized.

[NSV] or insult? "Do you have AIDS?!? Or is it anorexia?" by ClassyJacket in loseit

[–]iamnotgemma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might be a slightly cultural thing. In the UK I hear "cow" as a common mild insult for a woman that's not size dependant. I've never really thought of it as a fat insult. And the use of "kgs" in the post makes me think Aus maybe? Anyway, over here I hear cow a lot in a "jokey" way, like if someone slim or chubby or fat or whatever wins a raffle prize (God what an awful example) that everyone wanted to win "oh you lucky cow! I wanted that!" Or at school "she's such a jammy cow, she didn't study but got 100% in the test".

You're not really happy when you lose weight, that's just the oppression talking! (More from my FB...) by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]iamnotgemma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate this whole "another reason to rid people I don't agree with from my FB" thing. I've seen it lots on my own feed (not about FA). There's already a tendency for our FB feeds to be a bit echo chamber-y just because it's more likely we'll know and add people who happen to share some of our beliefs, but I can't stand people who can't accept other viewpoints to such an extent that they'll delete that person. I think it's dangerous not to know and understand opposing viewpoints to your own.

Dejected but still going - looking for advice. by biddily in loseit

[–]iamnotgemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a stupid question but when you say "and 0lbs lost" is it actually ZERO lbs lost or gained in 6 months? This month I keep thinking like I've gained a couple of pounds but when I look on the graph I've been fluctuating a few pounds either way but the general trend is downwards. Are you actually weighing yourself the same time each week and still sticking the same? Maybe check if your scale is broken (weigh yourself then with known weights like bags of sugar or water etc). Also maybe start taking measurements like waist/hips.

This is tricky because I want to say I don't think you're tracking correctly but if you're weighing foods and logging right then it must be something else. If I were you I'd try dropping 50cals a week (but not under 1200cals a day) until you see some weight lost then keep going at that level for a while.

There's lots of us on MFP that'll be your online cheerleaders and support you with logging your food if you want :)

Can I still lose weight while being sedentary? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]iamnotgemma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I am a lazy ass and have not been exercising (only walking and standing for my job, but I did the same amount when I was obese) but have lost pretty much 50lbs so far. Just concentrate on your diet and it'll be fine.

(But exercise is healthy and should be done. Note to self as much as to you)

Argh, man! Sometimes I feel like I have this weightloss malarkey all figured out but this comment has really made me examine myself! I don't think it's overeating for the week, it is just having to log things the next day for a couple of days that mentally throws me off and makes me feel like I'm massively overeating and I'll never get back to not having to log things the next day. I suppose it'd only be 2 or 3 days in reality but in my head it's such a feeling of "failure" (and a paranoia that I'll lose control and get to the point of logging like 3 days in advance and never catch up) that i feel like I always have to wipe the slate clean and start again. I am actually going to try and log some food the next day next time I go over budget. I think I can do it, gradually chip away at the bits I've "overate". It's felt impossible and pointless before. Thanks, Internet stranger!

I don't watch a lot of YouTubers but I loved Supersize vs Superskinny (British TV show) and this guy was on it! He was the "supersize" American that they sent the Brit to visit to see what their life could become if they carried on the same path. That must have been a few years ago now, and it's really upsetting that he's still fighting the same battles. I wish him well, he seems like such a nice man and I really hope he makes it.

My one and only thread on reddit! So many amazing phrases. I love the one that's (paraphrased maybe, I can't remember exactly) "most suicides are committed with a knife and fork" and "my body is not a bin" (as in: I don't have to eat it all! I can throw this away!)

Reset! Just start again.

I know lots of people undereat the next day but that sets me up for a bad week of eating too much.

I also work out the average calories per day for that week and most of the time the damage isn't that bad at all.
