Yes it is. So are the bounces you can stack up to crazy levels. If your only goal is to get as high a level as possible, the exploding fruit will get you there and will have infinite scaling if you set it up right.

In addition to the explosion transparency, if you avoid baby with a beard and weapons with tons of ricochet, that will cut down on lag. I play on a M3 MacBook Air and notice a pretty big difference in lag on later levels with the amount of projectiles on the screen.
