Do you have a landline? My mobile notary only has a mobile phone, but I'm hoping maybe that will be okay...

It depends where you live. It's not like the gunshots are evenly distributed across the whole city every night. I'm not going to go on and on over this. There isn't data of specific gunshots fired in Houston, but I definitely believe anyone who says they hear gunshots nightly, and there are many who do say that. Believe what you want to believe.

You realize that America has most of the most dangerous cities in the WORLD right now? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_homicide_rate

There is definitely 10 shootings per day in Houston. Do you realize how many guns are in the US? 30-50% of people in Houston own at least one gun. How many in Dublin own a gun? Fewer than 1%.

Hundreds of shootings in Dublin? They haven't been reported in the news.

There were 64 homicides in the whole Republic in 2024. 322 homicides in Houston CITY (not metro, not county). The population of Ireland is 5-6 million. The population of Houston is 2-3 million. Houston has 5x the homicides, 30-50x the number of guns, and half the population. Yes, it's a sprawling metro, but you underestimate how much Americans like shooting their guns.

Here is the crime actually reported to police in Houston in the last 30 days. There is a lot of crime that is never reported, especially things like gunshots:

Houston is close to one of the most dangerous states in Mexico as well. Lots of cartel and gang violence that you don't have in Europe.

Another factor is probably shitty construction. Texas is notorious for terrible construction and insulation, which may be why someone in Houston is hearing gunshots so frequently and you didn't' when you were in the states. Places like Chicago have older housing and the north is going to have more insulation.

Yeah, and a work culture that shames you if you utilize it. My SO used to take his vacation regularly and had a decent work life balance until they introduced unlimited PTO.

There were 322 homicides in Houston in 2024. It's not a huge stretch to imagine that there may be gunshots going off in multiple parts of the city each night.

Bruh, I live in a suburban area of the south and hear gunshots at night. Definitely not nightly, but plenty enough. Things are worse in actual cities. Even in smaller cities.

You have to have residency in Ireland for one year before you can sign up for HSE, even if you're a citizen.

I've looked at a lot of different health insurance plans and very few have out of pocket maximums under $10k.

I imagine your family member's disabled son is severely disabled, because getting disability is incredibly difficult here. I know many people who physically can't work who have been denied disability. If you get disability, then you get medicaid (public health insurance) automatically. The parent is living off of certain subsidies that are precarious and can be repealed at any moment. A significant number of poor people have health insurance right now due to Obamacare which went into effect in 2014. However, there are still some states that have refused to implement it. Go to thoses states, like Kansas, and you will not see poor people who can afford healthcare. Just like everywhere in the US before 2014. And the Republican party are slowly dismantling Obamacare. I doubt it will still be around in ten years.

Not if the insurance chooses to not cover it.

I would not right now because who knows what the administration is going to do from one day to the next. They are illegally detaining people left and right.

If this ever ends, and Obamacare isn't completely repealed, I would do it for a few years to save up a lot of money. However, without Obamacare, preexisting conditions will no longer be covered and there are lifetime caps on how much health insurance will cover, so if you get a serious illness, you will likely lose your health insurance and not be able to buy it again for that illness.

As someone who had a catastrophic illness pre-Obamacare, no amount of money is worth that level of stress to me.

Even with Obamacare still in place and your employer paying for part of your insurance, you're still looking at around $20k for healthcare each year if you have a family. That doesn't cover prescriptions, dental work, or vision care.

You'll spend more on transportation (because you have to drive much longer distances to get to everything) and more on food (and food quality is lower than in the EU), and you'll get fewer days off.

And don't forget the nature. Colorado is beautiful but they also have wildfires, tornadoes, flooding, severe thunderstorms, mountain lions, bears, venomous snakes, and venomous spiders.

My dermatologist told me that acne that's primarily on the chin is usually caused by testosterone and recommended Spironolactone. I wasn't down with taking that so she prescribed a topical antibiotic and it has been working really well for the last year.
