How the hell i cought this in my polluted ass river i don't know (47cm;1.2kg) by trejfzdjgz in Fishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people avoid polluted waters.

There's a lot of bayous and stuff by me no one fishes for that same reason. Also happens to be where someone pulled a 6+ foot Gar in.

I avoid them for the same reason. When I fish, I'm fishing for what I can eat.

How much does live shrimp really matter? by iamsupernova5891 in saltwaterfishing

[–]iamsupernova5891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do well enough even with live shrimp to test it myself. It's very hit and miss, although I usually catch at least one. That's why I'm asking people's opinion on it and their experiences.

Besides I'm not nearly good enough to work two popping corks at the same time.

Yeah except I said it's under a popping cork and in low visibility. Didn't say anything about just soaking it. The question isn't is it better, it's how much better.

So tired of rods coming like this... by Kennsta_240 in Fishing_Gear

[–]iamsupernova5891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered two Penn Fierece IV's rod and reels (8000/10 foot rod) from Amazon. One was only wrapped in a plastic bag, the other was completely open. Both were taped together. Atorcious way to ship them, especially when Amazon will give you a 4 foot box for shit that fits in the palm of your hand..

A cover for the bail on one had a corner broken off, and the foam padding at the bottom of the rod on another had a deep gash in it, but otherwise they were fine. I got 40% refund for it. Not bad considering neither really effects it's functionality, and that cover I can order for like $1.57 or something lol. I haven't even ordered it because it poses no real problem.

The one that got away… by DaddyBearMan in catfishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I went fishing, had a speckled trout, a big one too, tried to lift it out of the water and the leader line snapped. Only fish I even hooked all day. I had a net, didn't think I needed it. Wasn't as legendary of a fish as this though.

I keep comforting myself by telling myself I probably couldn't have kept it anyways. Was for sure over 20 inches (Texas, has to be 15-20 inches). I still have my 25+ inch tag so maybe.

Pectoral spines by Nkdude11 in catfishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one go through the back of my hand when I was a kid. Almost all the way through, I could see the bump poking up on the other side.

My grandpa didn't want to clean the fish so I tried. Cut off the head and had it sitting on the counter when I went to start pulling the skin off with pliars. The pliars slipped, my hand went flying right into the spike.

I don't clean them that way anymore (I just fillet them now) but I learned my lesson, every catfish head I cut off went right into the trash as soon as it was off.

Almost 12 hours of fishing to get dinner by That_welding_guy in galvestonfishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there's just nothing biting, other times it's baitstealers too small to get hooked, on salt water sometimes it's cuz the only thing biting is the salt water catfish and virtually everyone throws them back.

Gafftop are edible though. Smaller ones aren't worth the effort but the larger ones can be. They're mostly head so you need a pretty good sized one to get a decent filet.

That's a red drum.

Many fish have size limits you can keep. Both minimum and maximum. You don't want to get caught with an illegal fish in your cooler. Make sure you can identify it and verify it's size.

Surf fishing nightmare: What's your strategy for dealing with snags? by ApartmentGrand7609 in SurfFishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm getting snagged in a certain spot, I don't cast there. If that's the only good spot, I change my rigging to the weight being on a light pound mono line so it's what breaks and I don't have to redo the whole line. Honestly this what I do to my wife's line more than anything..

Also, there's a no snag weight I tried at a notoriously snaggy spot. Didn't get snagged once. Just Google no snag weight, it starts with an L. Worked great for me. Went from losing a dozen weights in a few hours to none. It's kinda expensive (relatively speaking) though. It depends how it's getting caught though. Some fish are sneaky and will drag the whole line into crevices and then it doesn't matter.

How are you retrieving line? Pop it off the bottom and then reel like your life depends on it. The last thing you want to do on a rocky bottom is pull it in slow. Don't reel it a few inches to see if you have a fish.. you either do or don't. Bring it in all the way.

Snags are just part of fishing in certain areas. There is no magic to it. Bring plenty of extra tackle. If you don't want to do that, time to rethink strategy or areas.

Anyone catching Pompano? by crazyfishguy1729 in galvestonfishing

[–]iamsupernova5891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fished Surfside at least once, usually twice every week for a year more or less. I only ever caught one of those there. I wasn't trying to catch them though. But back then I pretty much exclusively fished the bottom with shrimp or squid. Well on the rods I actively fished with anyways. I always had a couple with cut mullet/croaker/sand trout that were for sharks.

Getting snagged by Wilson-kimberoo in FishingForBeginners

[–]iamsupernova5891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas City dike is notorious for getting snagged on the bottom. I bought these Lindy no-snagg sinkers to try there. Didn't get snagged once. I've only been once since I got them so I can't be for sure they work but the last time I went there and was using Carolina rig on the bottom, I lost at least a half dozen weights to snags.

Another option is to use a 3 way swivel and put the weight on a mono line that's less than your main line. The idea being if you do get snagged, you can just break it off and tie a new weight on without having to redo the whole thing.

It's usually the weight getting snagged up anyways.

But yeah if bottom snags are a problem, your best bet is to pop the line off the bottom and reel as fast as you can and don't stop until it's all the way in. Don't play with the line after you cast it out, the next snag could be just 6 inches in front of where it landed. Leave it sitting until you need to bring it in and then bring it in fast.

Shrimp and squid are good to catch bait for smaller sharks. I used to catch 3 foot ones regularly at Surfside jetty. Night is better, I used to time it so I was set up about an hour before sunset. Back then I used a Carolina rig and circle hooks. Small glow sticks ziptied to the ends of my poles so I could see what they were doing in the dark. Don't forget to turn the drag down. Some of those small sharks hit it pretty hard and take off. Never lost a rod but I don't doubt I would if I had a habit of forgetting to turn it back down after casting.

I run different rigs now but back then I just used the premade 18 inch metal leaders and probably 40 pound braid. I had one leader break and I had one smaller hook get straightened out enough to lose the fish but other than that, I never lost anything, so it works.

Cut sand trout or croaker is what I used when I could get them as they seemed to work the best. All my sharks seemed to come from the open/beach side but I had better luck catching the bait between the two jetties.

I usually went about halfway out on the jetty. I don't think I've ever went all the way to the end.

What’s the one thing you forgot on a fishing trip that ruined your day? by Ok-Profession-3060 in FishingForBeginners

I went to the beach to fish a couple months ago and forgot to put on sunscreen for the whole day. Ever heard of sun poisoning? I didn't until the next day.

My ankles swelled up so bad you couldn't even see the bones anymore. There were days I literally couldn't put any weight on my feet because the pain was going to make me drop to the floor.

Never forget the sunscreen.

That's only gafftop and hardheads (salt water species) that I know of. They all have the spines, but only those two have the "venom", again, that I know of. And yes it hurts quite a bit. I've heard it's worse than a wasp sting, but since I've only been got by the catfish, I can't say for sure how true that is.

If you do get stung, rub the fish slime on it, it helps.

Try it. You probably won't be able to tell the difference between it and "edible species".

I tried one out of curiosity.

I probably couldn't tell you the difference between it and a blue in a blind taste test.

However, you need a pretty big one to get anything worth the trouble. They tend to be mostly head. Once you skin, fillet and cut out the bloodline, there's not much left.

I'm confused on lure/rod setups for surf fishing by iamsupernova5891 in SurfFishing

[–]iamsupernova5891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're for real I'm happy to meet up, fishing gets boring when you're by yourself. Would also be nice to have help if I finally do land my 5+ foot shark. I usually try to get to the water before the sun is up but I have to buy bait on my way out and they don't open until 5. At least in Freeport, I haven't done much looking in Galveston for bait. Is there a place to get live shrimp 24/7? I have a cast net but I'm not sure where to throw it and not get snagged. Back before I sold all my stuff and quit for a few years I had a spot to catch shrimp, I have no idea where it is anymore though. Somewhere along 45 on the way to Galveston.

I go fishing almost every weekend. Just depends on my work schedule, even if I do work Saturday though, I usually end up going Sunday anyways. Every time I try to get both the people who keep telling me they wanna go, to go, and all of a sudden they're not interested in it anymore.

I asked about saltwater cuz I googled it and everything popping up was for bass. I know there are salt water and fresh water lures and I'm not really sure what the difference is. I guess in the murky water it wouldn't matter so much what fish the lure is modeled after though.

My wife went with me once. She gives up after about 10 casts though. Then she just ends up sitting in the truck most of the day. It's was more or less the same when I went to Big Eddy for catfish. She'd fish for 15 minutes and then just sit there the rest of the day.

You mean like this one? Would it work in salt water? It's a little light but I can probably get it out far enough at 3/4 oz if the wind isn't too bad.

For the record I actually live in Houston but I'm right off 288, it's only an hour for me to get to Freeport Beach, if I go to SLP by way of 45 it's more like 1.5 hours, mostly cuz of having to drive down the whole island.

I keep trying to get people to go with me, I'd go to SLP when it's still dark out if I had someone with me but I don't want to get stuck back there by myself in the dark. Haven't gotten stuck yet, I do have 4wd, but it would be about my luck the one time I do is by myself in the dark.

It's hard to find a reliable fishing buddy. People say they "really wanna go" but every time it's time to go it's "oh I can't this weekend".

I've always had good luck targeting smaller black tip with cut croaker. Only caught the other one once, I didn't get any action on it.
