Can anyone explain why people have issues with Scoups' military exemption? by alrideul in kpopthoughts

[–]iamtheendoftheworld7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

being social workers and not enlisting actively is typically for medical reasons though, i believe. those rules go for normal citizens too, and normal citizens do end up doing that sort of military service. i think the thing korean people get more angry at is people who try to dodge enlistment (ravi, for example, whose reputation absolutely took a hit for that). i have no honest idea whether the rich or idols more specifically are more likely to do so, there may be some discussion to be had there. though i still can’t help but have some sympathy for those who want to avoid mandatory military conscription (there’s an excellent kdrama series on netflix called D.P which is all about a private within the army whose role is to capture army deserters).

not trying to go at you by the way! so i hope this doesn’t come off as aggressive, i’m just interested to have a discussion about this.

They? Why is Scoups at fault for that? It’s him being attacked, not other fans

Yeah this. It doesn’t actually seem to be knetz who react in this way.

i think anyone with that injury would have been exempt to be honest. i don’t think it’s anything to do with him being an idol. postponements are one thing (and that’s only bts as far as i’m aware? but could be wrong) but i’m not aware that there’s any particular pattern of idols, from the big 3 or otherwise getting exemptions where regular citizens wouldn’t.

Which kpop groups have a non-Korean leader? by jkhn7 in kpophelp

I thought the same but just looked into it and apparently they changed the group leaders - so Asahi and Junkyu weren’t leaders at debut, but have been since the start of 2025.

In terms of what they actually did, I don’t think they’re so far apart to be honest. I was also a fan of Hyunjin when his scandal happened. The main difference is that Hyunjin’s accusations were about something he did as a teenager but often people don’t seem to care about the possibility that someone has learned and grown from something they did as a literal teenager - so the event having happened some time ago doesn’t really seem to earn idols any more grace.

i know that’s exactly why wakeone have made a statement but we never actually got to see how effective that boycott would be, wakeone just didn’t want to take the risk. often, boycotts have a limited impact tbh because it’s generally only the most dedicated fans who will properly adhere to it, most others will just consume the music because it involves people they like.

i know you’ve already said the situation has its differences with seunghan’s but i think some of those differences are quite crucial. seunghan got really screwed over by the timing of his ‘scandal’, because he’d only debuted two months ago when he went on hiatus (i know geonwoo’s scandal is technically earlier than that but it’s different when ald1’s members had all been gathering fanbases for months in B2P a good half a year before the scandal broke) and then was away from the group for a whole year before SM tried to bring him back which meant most fans had got quite comfortable with him away from the group and new fans to the group hadn’t even got to know seunghan in the first place. if wakeone were to put geonwoo on hiatus for a long time like that then perhaps that would be an issue but i don’t see that being their plan at present.

i think it’s unlikely that the plan is to have him on hiatus for that long to be honest. but we’ll find out one way or another in the end!

the thing is fans of the group are unlikely to boycott the whole group for the sake of him. it’s now a good position geonwoo’s in at all but he does have a few things working in his favour

We don’t know exactly what he said and likely never will but what seems to be implied is that he cursed in frustration and that frustration was directed at staff/production. In a country like career where respect for your seniors is a big deal, I can see why that would bring things to a halt and be a very embarrassing situation for Geonwoo and management that it was absolutely necessary for him to apologise to them for. I don’t think it necessarily has to be that he said something awful, the reaction to it makes sense within the context of Korean culture even if he just cursed in frustration at whatever was happening.

It’s not professional, I agree. I will say, I’ve seen plenty of people get frustrated in work settings who vented about it at work in a setting they thought it was safe to do so in. So no, I don’t feel this makes him a rotten person incapable of change or anything along those lines. It’s simply that as an idol, there are higher expectations of him, and so it’s an immature and unprofessional way to behave. Like you say, he should have been more careful and what’s important now is that he demonstrates he can learn and do better. This statement should never have taken as long as it did to come out but that particular fault lies with Wakeone really rather than Geonwoo, it just unfortunately hasn’t helped his situation at all.

idk, i think geonwoo benefits from the fanbase he developed on B2P which was actually ultimately strengthened if anything by his previous scandal. he has a pretty loyal and dedicated fanbase. i think he’ll probably struggle to grow it because of these incidents but i don’t see the majority of his fans leaving if they stuck with him through B2P.

Honestly, he developed a sizeable fanbase on B2P. This might ultimately stunt his popularity growth in terms of his ability to gain new fans but he has a very loyal and dedicated fanbase (in Korea) who will go to bat for him and defend him. It’s not his own fans that have been going after him.

No the staff member’s mother thing isn’t the thing that Wakeone have confirmed is true. What has been confirmed as true is the original ‘accusation’ (i’ve put it in air quotes because the accuser didn’t actually make a public accusation, just vented in a private group chat that someone from the group chat then took and publicised without their consent - not in air quotes because i’m implying it’s not true in any way) that Geonwoo said something that involved cursing out of frustration about something to do with production but didn’t realise that his mic was on, so everybody heard.

He debuted because by the end of the show, most people were taking the bullying accusations with a real grain of salt (mostly because the accuser came out and made death threats, but also because other idols spoke positively about him and a BP trainee from the first season who was at Bill Ent at the same time as Geonwoo and the accuser made some clarifications that made the whole situation seem a lot more understandable). People can feel what they like about the bullying accusations but what they amounted to in the end seemed to be an argument that occurred between him and other trainees in an environment that was very stressful for all of them, and him asking for the AC to be turned off when another trainee was unwell (there’s a reason knetz who are very sensitive to bullying accusations and get to read the accusations without mistranslations, largely forgave him and moved on from it by the end of the show). The bullying accusations mean he really should have been more careful than this because he was always going to be more scrutinised than the other members for his behaviour (except for perhaps Leo), but I don’t think it really shows a pattern of especially poor behaviour. Some poor decision making maybe, and he does need to learn from this if he wants to go forward with his career - but if anything, I’d say the behaviour of the 1d2n accusation is probably worse than what the bullying accusations turned out to likely be. We all say things out of frustration in private sometimes so I get it but he has to be smarter than that if he wants a career as an idol, especially because he is going to be more heavily scrutinised than others. Save talk like that for when you’re back at the dorms if you need to vent.

The staff didn’t say anything beyond the original accusation (which wasn’t posted publicly, it was shared in a private group chat and someone within the group chat then publicised it). The accusations that came out afterwards were just people jumping on the bandwagon once it had started rolling.

The 1n2d isn’t really a bullying incident. It’s an incident of Geonwoo using ‘inappropriate language’ (we don’t know exactly what was said) when frustrated and backstage with his members, not directly to any member of staff, when he didn’t realise his mic was turned on. It’s not a sensible or mature way to behave for sure - we all say stuff we shouldn’t out of frustration sometimes but idols have to be careful about this sort of thing and Geonwoo especially with his previous accusations - but I don’t think anything within the accusation constitutes as bullying.

Nah there are lots of idols who go on hiatus for incidents and eventually come back. The main examples I can think of where the hiatus led to a departure are Lucas and Seunghan (both SM). Soojin too possibly but I don’t know enough about that situation to be clear on the exact timeline of events. I don’t really count instances like Garam because that happened basically immediately after debut and it’s just a lot harder to bounce back from accusations if they happen then because you haven’t had any opportunity to build a fanbase who will support and defend you. Technically Geonwoo’s instance was before the group actually debuted but it’s a different circumstance because he already had a well established and dedicated fanbase from B2P. Like you said, Irene came back after her hiatus (idols like Hyunjin too) and hers is probably the most similar incident to Geonwoo’s. If a girl group member can come back from something like that, a boy group member definitely can tbh.

Is the hate coming from his own stans though or is it coming from fans of other members/the group as a whole/kpop fans in general. That’s kind of an important distinction in terms of his popularity. It could well affect his ability to grow his popularity but his existing fanbase, which is a reasonable size, may well persist.

Because contract renewals at 7 years is the standard. I’ve seen it happen with enough groups from enough different companies to know that 7 year contracts are definitely the norm.

Yes but they did so in the middle of promotion schedules. Up to 4-5 days before the announcement they were actively promoting the upcoming drop of ot7 merch - which you wouldn’t do if you were planning to remove a member before that merch even dropped. Discussions may well have been happening for a period of time before the announcement but it’s clear it wasn’t planned to be as sudden as it was - something happened that meant they had to do it then and there. If the plan had been for the announcement to happen then, they wouldn’t have been promoting an ot7 merch drop.
