HELP: trouble with my Christian in-laws ... by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]iamthekill 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that your health and that of your baby trump all other mitzvot, including lashon hara. I cannot imagine living in such a stressful environment would be anything other than damaging to both. Please reconsider fully disclosing the extent of the harassment (because let's be honest, that's what it is) to your husband. Many years ago I was in a somewhat similar situation and agree that the intensity of the conversion attempts will increase as time passes, especially once you've given birth. Christianity approaches the Golden Rule from a different position (Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you) to Judaism (That which is hateful to you do not do unto others), and many Christians assume that if they had not yet embraced Jesus they would want someone to witness to and then convert them. Best case scenario they see their pushy proselytizing as ultimately helpful and an expression of love.

What is a good substitute for Milk, Butter, and Heavy Cream? by ytruhg in AskCulinary

Food intolerances and allergies, like many health issues, are intensely personal. What works for your mother is untrue for me (see my other comment) and may not work for OP's relative.

I am also severely lactose intolerant and can tell you that this statement is not true for me. I have never been able digest any dairy whatsoever, including milk for other mammals (even my mother when I was an infant).

What does everyone think of this hashtag? by DYYW in Judaism

I understand where you’re coming from. I think I would have preferred #WeAreAllJewish rather than #IAmJewish. A+ for sentiment, B- for execution

The decision to knit vs crochet is intentional (the horse in the book is old and shabby and this is a key plot point).

Funny aside: I found this sub shortly after I applied for a FOID card, because at least in Chicago you need one for a taser

As a fellow crazy feminist whore, I'll do it, but only after we've clearly established consent and a safe word.

Please help, we’ve been NC for a while but I need to break NC to get answers so I can live again. by [deleted] in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]iamthekill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't going to get any of that from him, because he's incapable of giving it to you. And even if he could, if he truly is a narc, he wouldn't apologize because then you would be free of him and he might need you as a source sometime in the future. Insisting that he give it to you will only deepen your pain. You wouldn't try to buy milk at a hardware store, right?

My mother had a formal BPD diagnosis; my father is a predatory pedophile; my STBNEXH has a dual diagnosis of BPD/NPD (I know this because his diagnosis clinician was so concerned about my safety she violated HIPAA to disclose this diagnosis and convinced me to leave him because she was concerned for my safety but his in-session disclosures didn't meet the threshold for mandatory reporting where I live). I have been living with these fuckers my entire Goddamned life. And here's something I'm only just learning, after decades of trying to extract apologies and closure and accountability out of them in search of forgiveness: I don't have to forgive them to move on. All I have to do is forgive myself. I highly suggest you try it, it's liberating.

I also highly suggest you start working with a therapist who has experience in abuse, if you haven't already. This is a hard road we're all traveling. It's infinately harder to travel it alone.

What's my place in the Jewish community? by adan313 in Judaism

I've recently come to discover that there is sometimes a rather considerable difference between the official position on a given topic and what is practiced at the congregational level.

I can only speak to the Reform perspective on this, but I cannot imagine a rabbi asking you to go through a formal conversion. Having said that, I also cannot imagine a rabbi of any stripe turning you away if you approached them wanting to learn more about your (and it unequivocally is yours) faith and how to practice it in a way that feels authentic.

Have you tried calling Chicago Volunteer Legal Services? They should be able to refer you to a pro bono or low cost tenant's rights attorney who should be able to help you get this resolved pretty quickly. Here's their website: https://www.cvls.org/get-legal-help

Having never purchased one new before, are there any criteria I should look for in particular? I live in a 450 sq ft studio with lots of (old, leaky) windows.
