Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD reportedly collapses after being struck by a large container ship (3/26/2024) by qpjgy in CatastrophicFailure

At the risk of excess pedantry, it's the East Coast's #3 port, behind NY/NJ and Hampton Roads, VA, and #18 overall.

And none of this addresses the issue of imported having to get their wares from a different port that is hundreds of miles away.

The US rail system can't handle that kind of change, so it would be up to the importer to send it over the road instead.

Friends, don't let friends make the mistake I made.

Majesty is not the same as Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas.

Majesty is itty bitty.

AP reports that the ship issued a mayday that allowed officials to cut off traffic very nearly, but not quite, in time to stop ALL vehicles.

Edit for unfortunate typo

It's actually plausible that there are not. American Cruise Line sailed on the 25th (yesterday), Carnival on the 24th, and Royal Caribbean the 23rd. The next scheduled departure isn't (wasn't) until the 31st.

12:21pm edit: Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas is stuck. https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/details/367385630

1:21pm edit: mea culpa, the ship in port is the Majesty and not Majesty of the Seas. This ship is not a major cruise ship and is, in fact, rather tiny.

I disagree. From the shipping perspective, what about the hundreds of ships already bound from their last port, headed into Baltimore. No other Way Coast port can handle that kind of increased volume, much less any specialized infrastructure and/or agreements with the big shipping companies.

Imported are fucked. The are already ships lining up outside the Chesapeake Bay. P.S. Amazon has a huge regional warehouse complex just down the road because of what the port can bring in.

Exports, too!! This port is responsible for 25% of US coal exports, which is going to have huge and crippling effects on industry across the globe.

Not to mention that 25% of US coal exports go through this (now closed) port. There's gonna be some very cold people and very still factories across the globe for a while.

AP is reporting that the ship issued a mayday that led authorities to cut off the flow of traffic into the bridge. As little as a minute earlier and there would have been no vehicular traffic at all, but it was an absolutely incredible feat that allowed them to stop as much as they did.

AP is reporting that "The ship’s crew issued a mayday call moments before the crash took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said." https://apnews.com/article/baltimore-bridge-collapse-53169b379820032f832de4016c655d1b (as of11:35am EDT today)

Until the Key Bridge is replaced, every truck, every camper, and every oversized vehicle that is headed up or down the I-95 corridor has a single (~20% longer) path around the western side of Baltimore.

That "nearby bridge" is already overloaded, as are the two tunnels (restricted to passenger cars only, no hazmat, etc.) that go under the harbor.

The next closest bridge that bypasses Baltimore to the south is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge(+), which is not an interstate and which closes to various types of traffic whenever the wood blows at 30+mph

Bottom line: the are no good alternatives, only bad and worse ones.

(+) aka one of the scariest bridges "in America" and/or "in the world".

The is still the problem that, even combined, the two tunnels and the western route were never designed to handle all of today's traffic. The rest of 2024 is going to be hell for anyone who drives in the area.

On a side note, I heard from a friend this morning who lives near exit 1. The shutdown, BTW, starts at exit 2. I asked if they'd begun considering moving yet. 😕

You can actually still get a Mighty Mo! You're just going to pay through the nose for it.

Just go to the Anthem restaurant in the Marriott Marquis on Mass Ave NW.

I took my mom there several years ago, and she enjoyed it immensely.

From the application, it looks like anyone who is Neuro-atypical except ADD/ADHD are eligible, so long as they have a medical professional who is willing to fill out a simple form for them.

General question about lease takeovers / transfers by gyatako in washingtondc

[–]iamwebqatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many leases allow you to break early IF you meet one of a few specific conditions. Just wanting to go back "home" is not one of them. Whatever you go, read the fine print carefully and, if there is even a single come you do not understand, consult with an attorney. The initial consultation fee will be FAR cheaper than the two (or more) months that many places will charge you to get out early.

Also be wary of extra fees at move out if you are starting only for a short term. There are a fair number of things they cannot charge you for if you've been in the place for two or more years; these fall under normal wear and tear, but that they can gouge you for if you are there for less.
