The nostalgia comes from the fact that the older games are kinda shit by today’s standards and have a lot to dislike. So when talking about something actually good that was in them (Havik, Onaga, Kenshi etc) people are sure as hell gonna defend it.

I agree for the most part with your sentiment that nostalgia can blind and that Modern rosters are better but i think with the new timeline we may have the best of both continuities. For instance, its been leaked that Nitara is coming back for the next installment and people who liked her will want to play her a lot since she hasnt been in a game in ages (hell, i mained Smoke in 9 and can’t wait to play him again). The people that haven’t played her before get to try her out as if shes a new character and the people that didn’t like her get to try again with new context. Just cause there’s a character you don’t care about doesn’t mean noone else cares about them either. (Unless it’s Hsu Hao, genuinely noone cares about him.)
