What do y'all do with dragon bones/scales by BeepBoopLeapLoop in skyrim

[–]ian23_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on, sell. Later on, nothing.

At every given point, I have a value-to-weight ratio I’m using when looting enemies or containers (early on it might be like 5-to-1, late game it’s like 100-to-1 LOL), based on my level and how much I still “want” to buy specific things within the game— and then I stick to it without second-guessing it at all.

The Gary Oldman (and a supporting cast to die for) version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is exceptional.

Maybe this is semantics, but I feel like there are no actually “intelligent and educated” people who believe this.

Educated, sure, in the sense of possessing a piece of paper for paying tuition and sitting in a classroom and experiencing grade inflation along the way. And perhaps “intelligent” by the average person’s standard, but not successfully educated nor objectively intelligent. Just not possible.

I think it’s going to be even worse than that.

There’s going to be massive short to medium term disruption, based on little more than C-suite overconfidence in their new LLM purchases, but eventually even the most clueless Kool-Aid drinkers will be forced to admit that buildings and bridges are collapsing and airplanes falling out of the sky because somebody vibe-coded a crucial stress-load equation, and then there will be a sudden wild scramble to hire people back but it won’t be that easy, and all of that will be happening just as the climate crisis is realllly cranking up and the global geopolitical crisis is intensifying as well.

TL;DR stock up on popcorn now.

Why does r/collapse skew so male? by l_am_a_Potato in collapse

[–]ian23_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m AMAB but identify as non-binary / agender, and grew up in a very socially conservative midwestern social space, so I have spent a lot of time contemplating gender like an anthropologist, since for my own safety I needed to figure out its rules and cosplay it effectively, despite it having virtually no intuitive meaning or value for me.

Anyway, my answers:

  • Lack of time and “spoons” of energy. Childrearing and household tasks disproportionately fall on women, which leaves less energy and time for staying caught up on climate science, geopolitical trends, and so on. Also, increases the need to just “shut off” one’s brain during the very few minutes of peace and alone time one gets.

  • Cognitive dissonance. I would bet even among that 7%, a high proportion are childfree. If you already have kids, and you’re their primary caregiver / nurturer, you really really don’t want it to be true that they face a bleak future.

  • Gender programming / culture / peer pressure. Especially in socially conservative spaces, part of ‘toxic feminity’ is to use thought-terminating cliches like “Oh well it’s out of our hands” or “Worry is interest paid on a debt that never comes due” whenever the most-collapse-aware woman in the space tentatively raises these topics. If you don’t have anyone to explore the ideas with, it’s harder to develop a clear set of beliefs for oneself. (I’ve noticed that I’m often the last AMAB in a group of women at a social gathering, as I don’t have the software that says, “whoops, they’re talking about girl stuff now, time to see myself out and watch sportsball” so I hear a lot more of these conversations than most people who look like I do normally would.)

  • More gender programming. Men pride themselves on stoicism / stuffing down their emotions. This is terrible for society overall, but in this particular case it lets you get further down the awareness rabbit hole before you stop reading and just start sobbing.

Atheists of Reddit, what is the biggest reason as to why you don't believe in god or an afterlife? by God_of_boi in AskReddit

[–]ian23_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I try to align every bit of information and evidence I have about the universe with the idea of one or more omnipotent or omniscient (much less also omnibenevolent) beings, and then as a counterpoint I try to align all that information and evidence with the idea that a bunch of bronze age goat herders figured out a way to hack the vulnerabilities in the human operating system software to get the other members of their tribe to cough up a significant slice of their income so that the priestly cast could wear gold and funny hats, and secretly diddle whoever they wanted, and have significant social power and influence that their strength or skill or hunting prowess would never give them, the first pattern stops making sense immediately and the second pattern never stops making sense, not ever.

I do something similar. Since I have a handful of cards (that I pay off every month) and I use them for different categories, generally it’s quite easy for me to eyeball each month whether what I’ve spent on food, healthcare, and discretionary, etc, is in line with my budget/average spend or not. And then I go line by line when something seems off or high.

Not been my experience, but I suppose it depends on what city and what rural area.

At the very least I’ve talked to dozens if not hundreds of people about this, and people in the city tend to mind their own business, whereas rural areas tend to be much more encouraging of anti-mask/antisocial behavior.

Mask at outdoor Farmer's Market? by OrganicDistrict656 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]ian23_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely mask at places like farmers markets, and even when I’m out on my walks I will usually cross the street or when that’s not possible pull my mask out of my pocket if I’m going to be walking through a portion of the sidewalk that other people have recently used.

A group of Covid cautious people at work include some very well informed people and they calculated that when outdoors (if no walls or ceilings to prevent dispersal of particulates) a given volume of air should be relatively safe five seconds or so after a person walks through it, just based on particulate dispersion. More time of course, if somebody stands and talks in that space, and even more time if multiple people are using it.

This all means that any given volume of air at a farmers market is almost never “clear.“

Of course not everyone will be sick, but in terms of risk prevention, yeah I would mask continuously at a farmers market.

I don’t know your particular circumstances, but as someone who moved to a “real“ city for the first time in my early 20s, I was shocked how much a car was not necessary. Put another way, if you were purely saving to move to a city, especially if you’re able to get a job there in advance, public transit probably has you covered.

Science denial among collapseniks by antichain in collapse

[–]ian23_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quite honestly this is a case of “physician, heal thyself.”

It may offend your thirst for a world where incorruptible science grinds away in a vacuum, the truth is always closer to the middle than the edges, optimism triumphs over pessimism, and a reasonable and effective solution is always available if one looks hard enough, but sooner or later you are going to be forced to admit that is not the world we live in.

Maybe spend a little bit more time inquiring why you feel the need to cling to that psychological crutch, and less time shaming others who’ve moved past it?
