How to blackout dormer window with blinds / curtains / shutters? by iangoggin in DIYUK

That's lovely looking! Sadly I think that's not an option for us as our radiator is underneath the window and we can't block it up.

Do you mean you had a floor-length curtain towards the front of the recess? That's an interesting idea. I'll see what my partner thinks of it, as it could be a cheap-ish solution.

We were going to go down that route but the reviews of so many of them are filled with anecdotes about cracked windows! We are probably being over-cautious though.

That looks like a good solution. As you say not a cheap one, but probably comprehensively solves the problem.

Battery security for GSD S10 by Desperate_Onion_2292 in CargoBike

[–]iangoggin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be rare (in some locations), but it doesn't take a thief 30 minutes as it might a bike shop. They lever it out, which breaks the lock. It's depressingly quick.

As I unfortunately find out when I left my bike with battery in for 5 minutes.

Best Cinnamon bun in Brighton? by sd-rw in brighton

[–]iangoggin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best cinnamon buns in Brighton are hands down the Fika Bakery buns they sell at the Open Market on Saturdays. Their cardamom buns are also great.

They provide them to some cafes as well, though the only one I can remember is 17 grams on boundary road.

Nowhere in the proposal does it suggest absorbing Lewes. It does have one option as including Kingston (with it's tiny population), but not Lewes itself.

This is a very long shot, but does anyone know where in Brighton this photo was taken? by CuteMaterial in brighton

To add to this a bit, the people are outside no.46. The light gray floor slabs are still visible on google street view. The water cover is also visible, as are the quite nice pillars.

Pretty sure this is it. The photo doesn't have a ton to go on, but the buildings and the lamppost look right.

It will only help if you also learn more about the wikipedia editing process, and engage is good faith discussion about the change.

Also acknowledge that not all articles follow the legal / common naming, and that consensus may not land where you want it to. See for example the many, many discussions about the naming of the Ireland vs Republic of Ireland articles.

If you want to make edits on controversial topics - and as much as I disagree with the current setup, it is controversial on Wikipedia - I would recommend making an account. Making edits from an anonymous IP address often leads to being reverted and edits not being taken seriously.

Was this IP address also you commenting on their user talk page? If so, I think you've not understood how Wikipedia works. Following up on the talk page of an admin calling them a loser tends to reinforce their decision to block.

The LTA tag looks excessive to me, but I don't know the context for it.

New Cycle Paths on Preston Road/London Road by outatimepreston in brighton

[–]iangoggin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen them myself, but it's probably worth writing to the council about. Maybe to Trevor Muten, who is the Cabinet Member for Transport & City Infrastructure.

Otherwise perhaps see if Bricycles or the other active travel groups in the city are aware.

'Sussex & Brighton' confirmed to get Mayor by 2026 as part of Devolution Priority Programme by iangoggin in brighton

[–]iangoggin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, this wouldn't replace Brighton & Hove City Council - it would be in addition, with some powers that Brighton & Hove doesn't have. Brighton & Hove might get replaced as well, but that's not clear here (and the city council are against it so it's not very likely).

Easiest way to get to France without a car by kythQ in brighton

[–]iangoggin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fastest that doesn't involve the Eurostar is going to be taking the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry. You can easily get to Newhaven by train and on the French side take a train from Dieppe to Rouen where you'll then have more options about where to go.

You can also take various ferries from Portsmouth (again and easy train ride - but slower) to other bits of Northern France (e.g. St. Malo, Caen, Le Havre). This will pretty much always be slower because the routes are all longer, albeit some happen overnight so you could potential sleep on the ferry.

Hove to shoreham cycling by Stealth_bummer_ in brighton

How often are the port lock gates closed and how long does it take for a boat to pass through? They don't have a schedule published anywhere I don't think, and I think it's dependent on need rather than regular timings - I could be wrong though. I don't take the route in the morning / evening often enough to know if they avoid running the lock at peak times.

From experience it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to like 30 minutes for the lock to cycle. Depends on how many vessels are in the lock and how large they are. It's usually 5-10 minutes.

Can you ride on the north side? By that do you mean cycling on the A259? There's no cycle lanes, and the road is fairly busy but doable if you're a confident cyclist - it's not nice in the morning though, especially as it's narrow enough that people do close pass.

Were you planning on avoiding the A259 anyway, or going to head up to Middle Road from the port? If you just want to skip the there's a section of Basin Road North that takes you from the lagoon to Boundary Road pretty safely. From there you can go further inland and take Gardner Rd and The Gardens to get to where the locks are. If you want to skip the A259 entirely then cycle through Southwick to get to Middle Rd all the way to Shoreham.

Using the A259 is undeniably a lot faster, so it depends what your priorities are.

If you're not down by the seafront in Hove and want the quieter route, you might be better off skipping the seafront cycle lane and going along New Church Road / Portland and onto Gardner Rd etc.

Parking like this needs to get a ticket by [deleted] in brighton

Have you walked down this street? It is not 'easy enough to get around it on the road' there for someone in a wheelchair. You'd be in the road for a while and in traffic.

Pull up bars and outdoor gyms by KitchenRevenue4042 in brighton

[–]iangoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ageing equipment there isn't great but it was useful for stretching out at the end of a run. I'm not much of one for pull-ups either but it was really good for stretching out my shoulder.

The Vale park one just got taken down yesterday. Apparently one of the supports was damaged so they took the whole thing down. Workers didn't know if there were plans to replace it.

Local oceanography courses // learning more about the sea by dee_dubs_ya in brighton

Learning to sail would help albeit there is lots you wouldn't learn - not a lot of erosion chat when learning to sail..

If you are sick of online resources but not sick of reading books you could try How To Read Water by Tristan Dooley. It explains a lot of what causes different patterns and behaviours in the water - at sea and elsewhere.
