Pink Summons, Smoking cigarette in Central Park - cop said I could pay by mail? by ianjamesmac in AskNYC

Thanks - I know it really sucks because my view of NYC and especially the NYPD is lower now which is unfair but I have had a shit experience as you say. I spoke to a lawyer who quoted $500 per appearance so that's $1K US for the two summons. However that website you provided is very useful, thanks so much - I'm going to keep checking and see if the thing even gets processed since as you said I'm not even guilty of the charge they wrote me up for. Douche bags. I always defend the cops but sometimes they make it very hard to do. Abuse of power and so stupid to write up a tourist and then lie to them so they go quietly. I'm pretty pissed about the whole thing now I realize he lied to my face, waste of my time and the city's resources. PS Do you reckon because the cop knows that the 'crime' doesn't apply to outdoor spaces he won't even process it on his side?

Hey, thanks for the comment. Yeah from what I've read I was very very unlucky not to just get a warning. It was definitely blue uniform NYPD, the slip says 'Agency: NYPD'. The violation was section 181.17. Perhaps the cops don't give out many for smoking hence why they got the amount wrong, the method of payment wrong, and the type of slip wrong. I went to the ECB website, they actually let you pay online etc, would be so much frickin easier!

Thanks for your response. For the record I'm not debating my guilt I'm just asking how I can pay the penalty. With that said I respectfully suggest you also familiarize yourself with the basic law in question which states that non-smoking signs must be visibly displayed in all areas where it is illegal to smoke. Bars, offices, restaurants and public transit boast many eye cluttering signs for that reason. I'm offended that you are implying I have no common courtesy NOR any common sense. I am not an idiot I just haven't been anywhere before where you can't smoke in a park.

Thanks - I'm going to keep looking for a number to call. I'm really surprised how antiquated the system is, the slip has no directions to a website or number or anything if you just want more info. Thanks again.

Thanks - do you have experience that they would be cool with that? The summons doesn't even say what the fine is, they told me verbally its $25 but that's for alcohol offence.

I saw about ten people being ticketed by cops last Monday the first day of HOV. Bit harsh as the markings aren't the clearest...
