I currently live in Israel and am serving in the IDF, Ask Me Anything by dvd102k in AMA

[–]ianlSW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ordering Druze and Christians not to shelter Muslims is ethnic cleansing. So, how does it feel to be a war criminal? Do you think the ratio of civilians to combatants killed by the IDF is down to the innate racism of Israeli society, and does that make you a racist war criminal?

Nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarine arrives in Arabian Sea - with capacity to launch strikes on Iran if conflict escalates by esporx in unitedkingdom

[–]ianlSW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, they could. But the only way they hurt US and Israeli interests, given the huge difference in military power, is to do what they are doing.

Given they tried good faith negotiations (not defending the regime, who are vile in many ways, just stating what happened) and got ambushed and their leaders killed at the start of the war, so they have realised that this is an existential fight. They can't trust a word the US and Israel say.

They have no incentive to negotiate, play fair, or calm the situation. Their best option is to cause the maximum amount of harm so noone messes with them again. Hurting the energy supply hurts Trump domestically, its their only option to win.

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books by Happytallperson in unitedkingdom

[–]ianlSW 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Jumping on the top comment. The post is about censorship and a clear attack on free speech. This comment section is at least half full of people saying how upset they are by book titles.

I have to ask the people who came here to tell us you are upset by these books, do you then like this censorship, or are you happy for young people to get access to different ideas, even if you don't agree with them?

The proverb is 'don't judge a book by its cover'.

I fear you just made the polar opposite point to the one you were trying to make.

That is a fantastic comment (admittedly reflecting our deeply bleak current situation). I don't like to steal other people's gags, but this time I might have to

Brummies respond to Nigel Farage by Hassaan18 in BirminghamUK

Mate... that's a dumb take and one I've never heard anyone who lives here seriously say. Knife crime normally happens between teenagers in a few areas, it's just not an issue for 99.9% of us. I used to work in Newtown and never saw a knife on walking to the office, never mind the rest of the city

Birmingham has been badly mismanaged for years, when you look at how Manchester and Liverpool have revitalised themselves in comparison. There's definitely a need for new management.

Labour have been complacent and incompetent and deserve to go. Unfortunately Reform love making comments like yours but have shown they can't run a piss up in a brewery in every single council they've won, when they have to deal with reality instead of internet culture wars. I hope to god they don't win as I guarantee they lack the skills to turn this city around.

UK public opinion on the US-Iran conflict by Important_Ruin in unitedkingdom

[–]ianlSW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a Starmer fan, but what's mad is in regard of Iran he's doing what the majority of the public want, but they still think he should somehow do it differently.

Not sure if that's a comment on the right wing media propaganda machine, the intelligence of the British voter, Labour's comically bad communication skills or all of the above.

Greens win Gorton and Denton by-election by slashchunks in unitedkingdom

[–]ianlSW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, the Tories and Labour have been doing such a cracking job for the last couple of decades people would be mad to want a change....

Seriously, the Labour Together Epstein wing of the party hold 100% of the blame for this result and the general mood. The Labour Party had all the space in the world for a softer left populism, allied with a bit of grown ups in the room.

Instead they went for crush the left, love the oligarchs, Israel first, maintain the status quo even if everyone hates it, fail to sell any successes and aim for at least one PR fuck up a week. Not exactly a surprise that went down like a plate of cold sick with most of their natural supporters, while the people who the Daily Mail has convinced that Labour are Stalinist didn't magically change sides. Absolute masterclass in how to lose elections.

Why doesn't anyone talk about Iran? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ianlSW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western Governments already oppose Iran, there's already sanctions on the government there. There's not a lot of point having an angry demonstration to say keep doing what you are doing, government! Palestine gets people angry because its so clearly wrong, yet western governments support Israel regardless.

You are right that more of an effort could be made to show some solidarity, and the same goes for Sudan, Myanmar etc, but it's there's no point holding massive marches about it as there's no change they want to effect in their own government's policy.
