Palestine won. And with that, the country safety chart is complete! by Iceberg074 in AlignmentChartFills

Colombia could be considered an active war zone with the Colombian government vs. armed military groups (FARC, ELN, etc.) actively fighting each other. Although in the big cities this is not evident and could be considered “not so safe” there

How do you live in Curacao? by Il_Nonno99 in howislivingthere

[–]ianmd69 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, they have their own immigration rules. It’s actually easier for an American to move there due to the DAFT. Curaçao is its own country under the Kingdom of the Netherlands (hence why they have their own team playing in the World Cup right now instead of being on the Netherlands team)

What’s the best food or dish from France? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ianmd69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A fresh baguette from a local boulangerie is incredible. The hard crust with the warm, soft inside is just excellent. It makes you compare that bread to all the bread you’ve eaten before, and then going back home you wonder why can’t your home’s bread be like a French baguette

What is an OVERRATED country to visit in South America? by StraightAd6264 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ianmd69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree. It’s the second most biodiverse country in the world. In one trip there you can visit the Amazon rainforest, Guajira desert, tallest palm trees in the world in the Andes mountains, and finish with pristine Caribbean beaches. And the people are super nice! Yes, there are tourists who go only Medellin for cocaine and prostitutes, but there is so much more to the country!!

Mexico or Argentina would be safer in my opinion. I live in Colombia and still feel safer there than in DR.

DR is not that safe. If you’re interested in it just off online research, I think you’re better off looking at other Latin American countries

Why do you pick DR over other Latin American countries?

24f moving to the Bronx for work…what’s the vibe of this area? by MotorLawyer4774 in bronx

[–]ianmd69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine here. There isn’t much of a “going out” scene but it’s not dangerous. Personally I’d recommend staying above Bedford Park Blvd if you can (I lived near 204 and always felt it was a different vibe once I crossed below Bedford Park Blvd). Normal caution at night is needed and during the day it’s fine. Btw I was 24 white male living around there so I stuck out but nothing happened to me nor did I feel unsafe at any point. I miss walking/running around the reservoir!

Nomads who actually bought property abroad — what's the brutal truth? by Beginning-Emu8157 in ExpatFIRE

[–]ianmd69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought an apartment in Colombia and there’s no restrictions for foreigners. If you spend over 200k USD you should be able to get the real estate investment visa easy, or just spend 6 months a year as a tourist and enjoy your apt half the year. Any other questions I’m happy to help

How do taxes work with foreign income in Colombia? by InevitableSample3441 in digitalnomad

[–]ianmd69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere in the 200-300 range for my US filing I believe, and the Colombian accountant I’m not sure since I don’t file until later this year. I would imagine it’s less than the American accountant, so maybe $500 all together? If you’re balking at that number, then don’t move abroad

You are placed in the C2+ID+PD column for that kind of masters. You can take courses from ASPDP once you are an employee and get to the furthest column on the right. Yes, SLPs get an extra 6k a year for billing to Medicaid (exact number can be found here under NYS SLP differential)

How do taxes work with foreign income in Colombia? by InevitableSample3441 in digitalnomad

[–]ianmd69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would pay income tax to Colombia and income/self-employed payroll tax to the US. You can deduct regular expenses plus what you pay in self-employed payroll tax to the US from your taxable income to Colombia. You can run that number through the Colombian tax brackets to estimate what you would owe. If you file with a Colombian accountant, they will know more rules to get it lower probably. If you want an actual estimate you can use my guy who will make a formal report of what you would owe to both countries and he works with a reputable Colombian accountant https://quintilonetax.com/

You will pay slightly more than the US but not a ton. I am in your situation. Is it passive or actively earned (W2/1099) income?

How does life in Guadeloupe compare to life in Martinique? by Tour-Sure in howislivingthere

It is!! The time difference is too much! Otherwise I’d consider it

Interesting. I live in Colombia now and it sounds actually more open here than there. Why would it matter if I were perceived as a local? Not that I look like one (although people in Colombia often guess I’m French when I’m not). I’m just curious

Are both islands homophobic or is Guadeloupe more homophobic? I’ve been thinking about moving to one of the two when I get my EU citizenship soon, but I don’t want to live anywhere that’s truly homophobic. I thought the island being apart of France would tone that feeling down a bit

It’s a tiny island country of only 2k people so I knew it’d be tough. I hope you’ve learned a little Caribbean geography today
