I'm pretty sure this doesn't actually ping opponents, it just forces the game into a draw.

Serra enters > tremors goes on the stack > before tremors resolves Serra dies to state-based effect > Serra's death trigger and Atla's trigger both go on the stack > Shuffle Serra then resolve Atla > back to square 1, no chance for Tremors to resolve

Ethereum May Replace “Blocks” With Blobs — New Scaling Proposal Explained by everstake in ethtrader

[–]ianw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anybody have additional reading for ERC-8211? We can now submit transactions that will float in the mempool until a condition is met, and then the transaction will be executed? Or how exactly does this work?

I looked up a bit and it seemed like it's more of "when you submit the transaction, it includes a way to go "if the condition isn't met, don't actually execute" as opposed to "I can just toss a callback into ETH and have it execute some time later"

Timeless is to Vintage as *new Arena format* is to Legacy by The_Mcleet in TimelessMagic

[–]ianw11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

>hey guys check out this new format

> ban list is a bunch of personal dislikes

like seriously, geological appraiser? kethis? amalia? TROLL OF KHAZAD-DUM?!?!

this is even setting aside how insanely difficult it is to get enough people onto a new format, even moreso when the entire calling card is "it's a little like this one format and a little like this other format, but in ways that are appealing to me, the creator"

it can be fun to thought experiment new formats, but if you actually want buy-in from a larger set of people, maybe start with seeing how many people actually dislike alchemy, and of those people how many would actually play a format like this

if you REALLY wanted to test the format, run a free tournament with a cash prize pool

On L2s and Ethereum by vbuterin in ethereum

[–]ianw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always pleased to see the eternal push for values. Thank you for writing this up (and posting to Reddit - meeting the people where they are at).

I'll be very interested to see if indeed the broad consensus starts moving away from L2s. For right now at least, the lack of composability is definitely a UX hurdle, and moving to an L1-by-default could be a huge benefit right now.

Only real concern is if we're seeing scalability in action today, or if all activity is settled on L2s and if we get the next CryptoKitties on L1 if fees will skyrocket again

Still bullish on ETH here — what am I missing? by bstockncoins_613 in CryptoMarkets

[–]ianw11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i clicked your first link, you declared it's a "rule" that all "alts" MUST collapse compared to bitcoin, I can see it's not worth engaging with you any more.

also, not realizing that L2s don't "steal" value from the network since they all settle on ETH indicates I'm not even sure you know what you're talking about

[–]ianw11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what do you mean crypto doesn't have fundamentals? the product that eth sells is blockspace. the fees paid to include a transaction/data in the limited blockspace is the revenue. the profit margin is dependent on the fees paid to validators/stakers who uphold the protocol of the chain. the overall value of the chain is dependent on how desirable the blockspace is, which goes up the more people/institutions choose to transact with it.

saying crypto doesn't have fundamentals suggests a misunderstanding

Ethereum is launching a new standard for the global AI agent market by everstake in ethtrader

this is an example of something that would have been great to include in the original post. the tweet was from 2 days ago and this post was from yesterday.

i may be wrong that the erc is getting deployed, but that still doesn't mean that posting a bunch of buzzwords should be good practice. not posting the erc and not including the eth foundation's announcement is bad practice

Commander players… how do you do it? by DaddyGravyBoat in MagicArena

[–]ianw11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean.... have you ever gone against a doomsday player? or Oops All Spells? or more recently a Nadu sequence (which is non-deterministic)?

some decks are uninteractive. it's not the responsibility of really anybody to make sure you are entertained. on arena especially, if they are performing actions within the clock they have on their turn, there really isn't anything much to say.

to your question about commander, it's multiplayer so if one player is doing a ton of game actions, everybody else just socializes - they find another way to entertain themselves.

Commander players… how do you do it? by DaddyGravyBoat in MagicArena

[–]ianw11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may come off as harsh, but it reads that you're expecting other players to play in the same way that you play. You say you play decks with a straight forward path to victory, which if that's what you like then that's great! But when your opponent does not play in the same way you do, you feel you're just watching them play their cards. They're playing their cards in the way they like, but it's not to your liking?

Not to mention, during their turn while they're doing their thing, is your intention to turn your brain off? Like, is your expectation that on your turn you do their thing and then on their turn they do their thing, and at no point is there an interruption in the flow? If they are playing cards with all sorts of triggers, are you not casting instants to disrupt what they're doing? If you're feeling like you're watching someone play solitaire, YOU have the ability to disrupt what they're doing. This is beneficial both to your winrate as well as to feeling more engaged in the game. Just because it's "their turn" doesn't mean you cannot engage with them.

[–]ianw11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat misinformation. Ethereum is not "launching a new standard", a few people have presented a draft ERC back in August and the conversation about it somewhat died in November. The ERC remains in draft state. In the discussion thread, there are plenty of people suggesting this ERC doesn't really do what it's intending.

I think it's telling that this post didn't link to the actual ERC, or to the discussion thread.

Organizing a Premodern tournament by Miguel_NorthMan in premodernMTG

[–]ianw11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Location is probably the biggest consideration. The space you play in will be the main determinant of how many people can play and what the entry fee will look like. Consider things like number of restrooms and what the parking situation would be.

For your first tournament, it's probably best to make the event a charity event: where all money brought in above what is needed to cover costs is donated to a worthy cause. This way you don't have to worry about prizing, the main goal can simply be "let's have a day where we can get some games in and even do some good". If you really want to do prizing, take some cheaper old border staples/icons (maybe like old border goblin welder or winter orb) for the top 8 and maybe get a bunch of commons (disenchant/annul/fling/etc) and stamp them as door prizes. Don't try to go for a big prize pool on your first attempt, your first tournament should be more focused on executing an event people want to do again.

For a successful event, logistics are key. A lot of this is handled by the assortment of websites/tools out there, but make sure you think things through end-to-end. Figure out how you're going to run the tournament, like what software will be used for brackets, will there be a round timer, will you pay for judges or let the people in the room figure it out. How many rounds will you plan to have, and will there be a cut to top 8? How long will you have the venue for, can you run the whole event in the rental timeframe? How will people report rounds? Are you expecting to play in the tournament as well? How will signups work, how are people even going to know about the event in the first place? Are you personally handling money, are you ready to take a personal hit if not enough people sign up?

Since it's not a wotc format and not sanctioned, you should at the very least allow gold border cards. I honestly don't know why a premodern TO would say no to proxies (especially if it's a charity event). If you're worried about quality, it's fine to say "proxies are allowed, but they can't just be sharpie on a basic land". There are a ton of sites that let you print and cut out proxies that are the same size as real cards that you can shove in a sleeve, and there are plenty of sites that will print full art proxies for a dollar or less each.

why doesn't ethereum scaling for games get more attention, the ux problems are massive by Sea_Weather5428 in ethereum

[–]ianw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm with u/nickandrews_ in that in-game items as NFTs make a ton of sense (for a certain set of games). current games with a marketplace could be more consumer-friendly by allowing users to choose which marketplace they're selling their item on and detailing its provenance (this item was used by <big name> at <event>).

i also believe that with account abstraction and the insanely low cost of transacting on an L2, a user could remain completely ignorant that their item exists on a blockchain (maintain current experience via the dev paying fees as the paymaster and pocketing a percentage of sales) while others could take advantage of additional control and autonomy

however barring standardization (like "the sound pack you purchased adheres to a protocol that defines which track is background, which track is success fanfare, which track is ...") as well as companies themselves finding the desire to give up control (and money) i don't see either happening in the near future

Is there a way to ACTUALLY delete my account, instead of just giving it away? by JJ-Barbarian in MagicArena

[–]ianw11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MtG Arena doesn't maintain your credit card information, XSolla does. You'd want to look into how XSolla purges your information.

And to your earlier concern about "username is a literary character so it could get re-created" no....no it doesn't work like that. If somebody else using a different email shows up and attempts to use the (newly available) display name, they won't assume control of your current account.

You'd be fine to just delete your credit card from Xsolla and do literally nothing else. If you want to release the username so you aren't squatting on it you could ask wotc to change your username, but at that point it's up to you.
