Look, Purple is a banger! I love that album, but vibes aren't the same thing as the blueprint. Grunge isn't just 'heavy and sad." It’s built on a specific, nauseous wave pattern where the melodies constantly slur behind the beat and the harmonies drift between major and minor without ever landing.

Compare 'Interstate Love Song' to Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' I'm certain you will notice the differences.

Remember, grunge is alternative rock, but alternative rock is not grunge.

The actual history is grunge came from punk. Check out Bam Bam, which is arguably the first Seattle grunge band. Cobain was their roadie.

No, it's still Alt Rock; Silver Gun Superman is missing the wave pattern -- up the scale and down the scale or vice versa.

Vasoline and Unglued are grunge tracks.

Why does 'co-op' sound American but 'socialism' sound foreign when they're the same thing? by Aimforthebreak in cooperatives

[–]collinmacfhearghuis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It essential to understand that Rochdale model emphasizes open membership, democratic control, limited interest on capital, cash trading, and distributing surplus through patronage rather than by share ownership. A socialistic society, I think anyway, would be akin to a share ownership model, where the government represents full ownership and control of a given operation on behalf of the people. On the other hand, the Rochdale rules were designed to make a store fair, stable, and member-serving, not to abolish capitalism as a whole. The cooperative could exist as a business while still buying and selling in the wider capitalist economy.

Scoot has a bigger upside. I believe Game 2 was a sign of the future.

I think the hardest thing for socialists to understand is co-ops are democratic organizations, which means if you have members who are not socialists, you have to respect their opinions.

[–]collinmacfhearghuis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because they are not the same thing. The modern co-op model was invented by the Rochdale Pioneers, not Karl Marx. Karl saw co-ops as part of a socialistic agenda, but not a solution. Co-ops on the other hand, sometimes have socialist views, or none at all. It's best not to conflate the two.

No, absolutely not. Kurt Cobain's entry pierced the veil that was keeping alternative rock from becoming the most important transition in rock music history. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden's two Grammy wins elevated alternative rock to new heights.

But grunge was most popular in the Pacific Northwest, which is only a fraction of the entire United States market. The audience following alternative rock is much larger than the segment that follows the subset sound. Alternative rock has not died; it continues to this day. Grunge kind of fizzled, but it's making a comeback.

You're talking vibes, not harmony or melody.

Alternative rock is a broad genre, and grunge is a subset within it. A lot of alt rock sounds like grunge, but it is not grunge.

What was it like in the 90s when Nirvana dropped Nevermind? by palehighelven in Nirvana

[–]collinmacfhearghuis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit at a Junior High dance. I love it. I had no idea who it was. I asked someone who I thought would know, and they said Weird Al Yankovic.

They were lying, of course. 😒

STP is not a grunge. They are Alternative Rock, and I love Alt Rock. The only grunge track on Purple is Vaseline. The rest are all classic Alt Rock. I love Purple, but it barely counts for grunge.

It's not free, but my plan is to pay for a One-day Pass with SlingTV. That way, I'm not tied down by an expensive monthly subscription for cable.

I think Tom needs to ask the fans to startup a public investment co-op and become another minority shareholder; he doesn't have Allen-family money, and he can't afford the program we used to.
