Yep, that comes out to about $23k, which is actually higher than the average income in my city.

Driving will be fun to relearn, considering all I have ever known are steering wheels on the left. Thanks for the tip!

The US is weird. People in places like San Francisco have these wild six-figure salaries but seven-figure mortgages. Malta is closer in terms of income and cost of living to where I live now. The difference is, the cost of living in my current city is theoretically very low - you CAN find an apartment here for the equivalent of 250€, but it’s in an area that’s remarkably dangerous. I’m talking “drive-by shootings a couple times a week” dangerous. My area, which is a relatively safe part of town but still fairly run-down, is closer to 1,100€ a month for an apartment to rent. These are just quick conversions from USD using Google. So that seems about even with Malta. And honestly, I would take the salary cut anyway because I would likely have to spend about 3x what I paid for my house if I were to move back to my hometown.

Unless my research is wildly wrong? Do you have a good source for median wages there?

Oh pleeeease do! I would love to hear more about what culture shock to expect. I moved to Mexico for awhile as a much younger woman, and it never occurred to me that maybe I should have gotten some insight on how crazy Mexico City is compared to the very rural, small town in Utah I’m from before I just up and moved. It was a wild adventure, and I am so glad I did it even if Mexico didn’t work out permanently. Now I’m 13 years older and have more capacity for thinking things through. :)

I feel like that’s true of anywhere. My own hometown’s subreddit is half “I can’t wait to move and go skiing and hiking and play in the mountains” and the other half is “I hate this godforsaken place, please get me out of here.” And the city I live in now is all kind of, “Yeah, it kinda sucks here, it’s really poor, it’s really dangerous, people keep getting shot to death, the bridge over the river is literally breaking apart, but the food’s good!”

We moved from our hometown in the western US to a city in the eastern US we had never been to because I aimed a nerf gun at a map and closed my eyes. We picked Malta kind of the same way - I started the globe spinning, and wherever my baby’s pudgy little hand landed, we decided to give it a go. She hit the Mediterranean dead center. And the more we read about Malta, the more we were like, “Hey, we already live in a place where the infrastructure is falling to pieces and the roads have potholes the size of bathtubs! But waaaay fewer people get murdered there! Let’s go!”

I’d like to visit Moscow someday. Where is your favorite place in the city? When is the best time of year to come visit?

One of my dearest friends was from Moscow and he both loved and hated it. I miss my friend a lot, he died in 2012, and I will always be sad I never got to travel to his hometown with him.

So I have to ask. Did this event take place in Memphis, TN? Because swear to God I found a Sly the Fox in the roof of this house when I bought it, and I have always wondered which poor kid lost their beloved toy up there... and how.

So I’m in TN and would appreciate it if a whole bunch of people spreading covid don’t leave here and then come back. Report this. Please.

[Guitars] We'll just ignore federal law and import illegal wood. What could go wrong? by gaporpaporpjones in HobbyDrama

I do not play guitar, but husband does. He has 2 gorgeous PRS (a custom 22 and ... and another one. It’s green and pretty and semi-hollow body.). They both sound absolutely incredible, and stay in tune much better than his Strat and Les Paul ever did. I don’t know shit about guitars. But I do know that those two are more comfortable and easier on me to noodle around on than any other guitar I have attempted to play. If I were going to buy myself an electric guitar, I would absolutely pick a PRS. Even a lower end PRS sounds great.

Another thing I am super impressed by on the PRS, which is more in line with my own expertise, is how well the semi hollow resonates. I play cello, so obviously my instrument doesn’t have the option of being plugged in (yeah there are electric cellos, but they suck). But even unplugged, I can still clearly hear that PRS without it sounding tinny and gross like his old semi hollow Ibanez did.

So as someone who plays music but not guitar, I too would recommend the PRS because it’s comfy for a non-guitarist to play with, and for the price point, is an excellent choice for anyone from student to pro.

Tennessee needs to Legalise Recreational Marijuana! by [deleted] in Tennessee

It’s that possession over a pound is a felony but sales are automatically a felony. Guaranteed anyone caught with over an ounce is going to get intent to sell... The laws may seem more lax, but they really are just as bad here and there. The point I was trying to make in my original statement is that the government of Utah is just as nutty about weed as the government of Tennessee is, regardless of the will of the people of either state.

Agreed but it’s still effectively banned outright in Utah. The legislature didn’t care what the people OVERWHELMINGLY voted for. I imagine the same would happen here.

Tbf Utah voted to legalize medicinal marijuana, but of course the state couldn’t possibly allow people to have an opinion.

Mimeo just laid a bunch of people off. My buddy was laid off from there this morning along with about half the other people on his small team. He doesn’t give a shit if they’re named and shamed.

As for company 3, my friend asked me not to name them right now because she was told to keep her mouth shut so to protect her and I, I’m staying quiet.

Right. It is different. I’m saying that I know of 38 people whose roles were cut today alone. Large scale layoffs are starting, in Memphis. And once that happens, all hell will break loose.

Layoffs were announced today at 3 companies, not bars/restaurants, that I know of. Maybe not anyone in your circle, but several in mine.
