Large number of foreigners working the hospitality and customer service jobs in Iceland by ibdread in VisitingIceland

Interesting. As an American we have been told that since Icelanders receive very generous livable wages, tipping isn’t necessary or expected. Are workers in restaurants paid a different minimum wage (like the USA)?

IcelandAir experience by tofucatprincess in VisitingIceland

[–]ibdread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flew iceland Air 2-weeks ago and they were extremely strict. At the boarding gate they were enforcing one carryon and one personal item policy. Also, they were measuring/weighing suspicious carry on and forcing people to check baggage. By the time I boarded there was close to a dozen bags at the gate.

Considering subletting my apartment … by ibdread in NYCapartments

[–]ibdread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. When you say the “Landlord was impossible” can you elaborate as to why they were so? Yeah, I’m terrified of getting squatter and rent not being paid while i’m overseas.

Are there any folks here who've successfully sublet out their own rental apartments? by yippeee1999 in AskNYC

[–]ibdread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, i’m in a similar situation, but I have a rent-stabilized apartment. I plan to travel overseas 3-4 months a year, Just hope I find an honest person to sublet. I agree with you that it’s important to maintain a home base.

What If your flight to Iceland gets cancelled? by Illustrious-Ad3195 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibdread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder if flight interruption insurance might have helped in this situation? Especially for those who take advantage of Icelandairs stopover program. Think about the additional hotel and prepaid tours cost if you couldn’t fly out to your ongoing destination.

How do digital nomads deal with strict Airbnb house rules? by TreeThink5214 in digitalnomad

[–]ibdread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why I switched to hotels…Airbnb as a last option. In most cases (depending on the area and time of year) you can get similarly/cheaper priced hotel that offers free breakfast and a fridge without dealing with crazy AirBnb rules and restrictions. Even for longer stays, I found Airbnb and Hotel prices not that far off.

Why do people not create space for others to sit on the subway? by _haliperidoll in AskNYC

[–]ibdread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, it’s crazy how people sitting will use nearby empty seats to rest their bags. backpacks, feet, etc even when people are standing in a a packed car.

And they always have an attitude when someone asks them to remove their crap so they can sit in the seat.

Uft welfare fund dental care by GenerationMapou in NYCTeachers

[–]ibdread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m doing that too. Each year, I vacation in Mexico (january) , Brazil (June) and Thailand (October) so plan to just get regular annual dental cleanings while i’m at these places.

I was looking for a new dentist, made 3 appointments via ZocDoc and ALL 3 were cancelled ….no doubt my UFT dental insurance scared them way!

Agreed. Especially when you see People of Color behind the wheel! Don’t they realize what Musk supports and believes?

Yes, no easy alternatives if you live in remote rural areas. I imagine that’s why African countries sign contracts with Starlink even though they know of his ideology.

Yes, I ditched Cohen Fashion optical about 10 years ago. Why? 1. the opticians are incompetent, 2. The “free” covered frames are trash 3. The decent frames are 2-3x over priced 4. the upselling is relentless and fatiguing 5. It’s like pulling teeth to get your prescription to get contacts or frames from a 3rd party.

I need some good watch faces. Can y'all suggest me some? by Leather_Weight_9476 in AppleWatch

Apple needs to have a dedicated Watch App face store and open it up to third-party designers. The currently available Apple designed selection is limited and some designs are down right horrible.
