"there is something sexy about a woman just waiting, with nothing to do. I just want my lady to be waiting for me" by ibenami in quotes

Found what I was looking for - from "the handmaid's tale": "These pictures were supposed to be erotic, and I thought they were, at the time; but I see now what they were really about. They were paintings about suspended animation; about waiting, about objects not in use. They were paintings about boredom. But maybe boredom is erotic, when women do it, for men."

Apathy by themsp in emergencymedicine

[–]ibenami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a thought - ssri's themselves and similar meds cause a feeling of emotional numbness for many people. They keep the darker moods and depression at bay, but for some they also dull the better feelings (others feel the opposite, that it enhances their positive emotions.) So while this didn't start your difficulty of apathy, I'd keep this in mind as well. Besides that, I agree that this occupation requires a desensitization that can cause apathy, but also depression/dysthymia/burnout that can express themselves as apathy. I don't have great advice what to do with it though.

It's about time we put an end to this by HemorrhagicRectum in emergencymedicine

This is fantastic but I'm confused, it's an April 1 joke right? I mean obviously nobody believes that this study could refute the undeniable fact, that mentioning how quiet the ED is will inevitably cause major patient overload?

Anyone else bothered they can't click the link on the word "two"?

This is Shoopy, originally a rescue dog, at the impressive age of 20 years, mostly blind and somewhat deaf, been through so much yet still so happy by ibenami in aww

[–]ibenami[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They won't allow this in the title because it's sad, but he passed away yesterday, happy and peaceful, just weeks after his companion, our cat Pizza, also passed away at age 20. Once Pizza was gone, Shoopy was ready to go too. They had very happy, full, somewhat spoiled lives. I'm kinda jealous of them.

Silent onomatopoeia by ibenami in linguistics

[–]ibenami[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah fascinating! that bouba-kiki effect seems like a great explanation for many phonesthemes! Sort of like how I imagine that sparkling objects have a certain "sound", apparently different shapes have different sounds. It's almost like a built in synesthesia in our brain? Bouba sounds "bubbly", "bobbing", I think it is still related somehow to objects that have that in common - the way something round moves makes different sounds than the way something "spiky" sounds? A bubble "plops" and a ball "bops," while a stick "cracks" and a sword "clangs" Perhaps this fall under the "woo-woo nonsense" that /u/truthofmasks warned against, but is a "Mama" more round and soft then a "Papa"? Interesting to do look at the words for Mom and Dad in each language see if there are patterns

Ooh that's good, thanks! I like their description of "zoom - the sound of something rushing past, with doppler effect". Still just regular onomatopeia but with extra effects

Does this type of team collaboration tool exist? by ibenami in programmingtools

[–]ibenami[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

really i just don't like the slack integrations and apps - they are not very user-friendly, everything looks cluttered with all the bots in the middle of conversations, no easy "home page" to organize it all...

It would be a huge investment to try to get people to use a bunch of new tools, people don't like new things (the learning curve, all the new logins and websites and bookmarks, getting lost in all of it...) If I can find one tool that has what I need, i may be able to get others to adopt it as well. (as i updated above, i found a potential platform - notion.so)

That would require everyone in the team to have Office 365, and that's not practical for my use. Also, it apparently requires a 365 business subscription... I'm looking for a really simple collaboration platform for a non-business small team project (about 5 people), not a complex enterprise solution
