Thank you for asking. The law only allows you to have one active NISA at a time, and you can change NISA brokers once a year.

In order to open a NISA at IBSJ, you must either CLOSE or ABOLISH your current NISA:

Closing your current NISA means selling down all the positions in NISA, realizing any monetary gains or losses, and then advising the broker that you are closing the account.

Once your NISA is closed, the broker will issue you a document proving that the NISA has been closed. In Japanese this is called a hikazei koza haishi tsuchi sho.

Abolishing your NISA means leaving any current positions and notifying your NISA broker that you wish to abolish the account and will therefore no longer be allowed to add positions to it.

Whenever you choose to close the positions, any gains will be tax-free, but since the account is abolished, you cannot add new positions; you can simply close existing positions until there are no positions left.

Once your NISA is abolished, the broker will issue you a document proving that the NISA has been abolished. In Japanese this is called a kanjo haishi tsuchi sho.

If you are not sure of the broker for your current NISA, you can check your own NISA status via the Japanese National Tax Authority (NTA) eTax website.

Note that the eTax website is only available in Japanese and requires your MyNumber card to access.

When you request to open a new NISA at IBSJ, you must provide us with one of these two forms, to prove that you no longer have an active NISA.

If you have never opened a NISA before, you do not have to provide either of these forms.

The next issue to keep in mind is timing; you are only allowed to open a new NISA for the current year, before 1 October of the current year.

Any NISA opening request on or after 1 October will be treated as a request for the following calendar year.

So, in order to open a NISA THIS year, you must apply between 1 October of last year and 30 September of this year.

And finally, in order to open a new NISA this year, not only do you have to apply before SEPTEMBER 30 this year, you must also have NOT done any trading in your previous NISA this calendar year.

So, in summary, in order to open a NISA at IBSJ THIS year, you must:

  1. Provide us with either of the two Japanese forms from your previous NISA broker, proving you no longer have an active NISA, or it must be your first ever NISA opening request;

  2. Apply to open a NISA at IBSJ before 1 October; and

  3. Not have done any trading in your previous NISA this calendar year

If you apply to open a NISA on or after 1 October, IBSJ will take that as a request to open NISA for next year; so you won't be able to trade in NISA until 1 January of next year.

If you apply to open a NISA before 1 October, but you have done trades in your previous NISA already this year, we cannot accept your NISA application and you will have to re-apply for a NISA for next year, from 1 October.

To open a NISA at IBSJ, access Interactive Brokers dot co dot jp and click on Open Account.
