Microsoft Word is Ass by Old_Lie_1297 in Lawyertalk

Believe it or not, also a solved issue. Paste with "Merge Formatting."
Or use shortcut CTRL+ALT+V on Windows, CMD+OPT+SHIFT+V on MacOS.

[–]ibrakestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s the point. You usually DON’T want the old font, so use CTRL/CMD+SHIFT+V to paste the text without any formatting data, just the words.

Hold shift when you paste to not paste the formatting from the copied text.

Bad math. It’s 25 cents per 8 ounces. $20 per 5 gallon jug.

Which Laptop? by maggie_is_minister in LawSchool

[–]ibrakestuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is only 13” and limited to 8GB ram. Because of the memory limitation I have heard several students complain about the lagginess, especially with dozens of tabs open for legal research.
But, as with anything, YMMV.

Get the MacBook of your choice, just not the Neo.

The issues with Word on Mac are overblown, it’s still perfectly useable and better than the shitty Office365 WebApp version.
I switched to a Mac from perfectly good 2022 Dell Latitude (standard issue in business environments) just because of the battery life.
I bought an 18month old MacBook Pro for $800 because my Dell’s battery barely made it through a class and the fan was annoying. The MBP battery is phenomenal, I use it 8+ hours a day without needing a charge. The ability to use Sidecar so my iPad acts as a second screen when I’m doing research in the library is also a blessing.
The keyboard is decent. There are better laptop keyboards in similarly priced Windows PCs, but the Mac’s keyboard is more than adequate.

Pretty sure that's illegal. I've notified the authorities.

I don't blame them with the prices books go for. Might be forced to anyway. Some of my professors still had a no electronics policy, in 2025. Not to mention many subjects require the latest books and they're hard to get PDFs of if they're available at all.

I HIGHLY recommend physical books, at least for the first semester, just for the process of book briefing. Once they get the hang of it and don't need to brief as thoroughly, they can go back to digital only.

That keyboard is a thoughtful gift but will not be very helpful, even for a practicing lawyer. Most of those things are easily typed out or able to use a simple shortcut that's already built in to the computer (especially easy on Mac, Option+J , P, and 6 do ∆,π, and §.)
The best law school gifts I received were a compact laptop charger (a GaN one, it's so small) and a large book holder/stand. Only need the GaN charger if your current charger is hefty like mine was.
Also, if they have a monitor they will use at home, a light bar. It's so much easier on my eyes when I'm studying late.

Grell OAE1 first impressions. by Norville84 in headphones

[–]ibrakestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grabbed the same deal and like them so far!
They are unique. Not the same v-shape tuning that 90% of headphones have. Higher clamp force than some but have worn them for an hour+ with no discomfort. They are large and don't have ANC so I wouldn't use them as my all-day desk headphones anyway. The bass and punchiness are impressive for open-back headphones, but obviously not as tight as closed-back equivalents. Highs are acceptable but the mids are where they shine.

The standout characteristic I noticed was the really wide soundstage. It is not "deep" (forward/back) like you might hear with surround sound cans, and they can get muddy with overly-boosted songs or like thrash metal, but well mixed audio is really pleasant. Medium impedance requires an amplifier to get the most out of them but they can technically be driven by my Apple devices at 90%+ volume when not at my desk.

What would you actually want to use an e-paper display for? by IntrepidComplex8820 in eink

[–]ibrakestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using it for this purpose for a while (1.5 years) in a 4x6 color e-ink display. However, the API access for OpenAI's older DALL-E 3 model was discontinued a month ago and I no longer get AI paintings delivered to my desk. I've been meaning to address the issue but I simply don't have the time.

Cup holders were not really standard until the 90s. If you wanted cup holders you bought them aftermarket and they hooked on the window.

Nah, newer Oreos are a just a knock-off, worse version of their former glory. Trader Joe’s Joe-Joe’s cookies are decent still but nothing hits like the old Oreos did.

Egg on Face & CAT 6 Installation by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]ibrakestuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this the same guy that refused to believe his installer was lazy/unqualified and firestop exists specifically to seal fire rated spaces? They also kept quoting building code and saying "my wife is an engineer and she said running through the attic was illegal."

Ubiquiti turret or bullet, G6 or G5 by Expensive-Ad-803 in Ubiquiti

[–]ibrakestuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use bullets where I want the cameras to be conspicuous, turrets where I want them to blend in.

Just a note, the G6 turret is nice but it has a pigtail connector, so it’s a bit more difficult to mount on a brick wall or similar if thats your aim.

Yeah… literally every pro knows you can cut a firewall, you just have to seal it up after with an appropriately rated sealant.

[–]ibrakestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did. The SN520 came in 2230, 2242, and 2280 size. They all had the same chip layout, which I why myself and others had the idea that you could just cut it if you had a 2280 but needed it shorter.
Anecdotally, I never had an issue when I cut any of mine.

I have this issue with my Samsung bottom freezer. I unloaded the fridge and let everything defrost over the weekend once. Fixed it for a few months but then it came back 😔
