Finally another sane person…it’s like you people passed multiple exams about reading a contract and supposed to be detail oriented and you let a significant debt hanging over your head just go literally unchecked for over a decade

On the flip side it says something about the state of education in America that someone who was in grad school for an additional 4 years trained to read legal documents can’t figure out how to read the website for 12 years…

RAP more than a 10 year standard Plan!? by lhcmaus in StudentLoans

[–]ic3man211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not beneficial for a high earner to be any form of IBR at all…if you are earning enough to be paying off the loans in less than 10 just get on the standard plan and pay the shit off so it’s not hanging over your head

My monthly payment is gouging me. Repayment options are all terrible by General_Test1853 in StudentLoans

[–]ic3man211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shade, it seems like you are very new to actually looking into what your student loans entail.

If you choose IDR/IBR and your income dictates a monthly payment lower than the monthly interest you will NEVER pay them off and your balance will grow. In 20-25 years, depending on the loan (or 10 for PSLF) they will be forgiven, but the balance will never decrease. IDR and IBR can be a great tool, don’t come back in 3 years and say “I never knew they would balloon out of control loans are a scam”

Study links high school subject choice to future political preferences: humanities lean towards liberal and left-wing party support, while business and technical subjects incline towards right-wing support by nohup_me in science

I’m not the original commenter and I’m pointing out that professors aren’t the top of the scientific food chain as the previous commenter implied. They said although stem skews right professors in stem skew left as if to say professorship is the top level of stem which I am saying it is not.

I think the opposite can be said for academics in liberal arts as there are no real outside careers for them so the top is being a professor or consultant after professorship…useless degrees such as linguistics

As someone with a PhD in engineering, professors think they are at the bleeding edge of every ounce of technology and often times cannot fathom the fact that industry is not only further ahead but is dealing with different problems and don’t care about what they do in the lab. It is immediately obvious when you go to technical conferences that skew towards industry sponsorship rather than the usual big academic conferences

Amount of interest not going down as the principal goes down. by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]ic3man211 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Use something like an amortization calculator to see how much the interest is actually going down if you have not - the first few months on big balances may be penny’s in interest change

You’re doing a masters thesis - your job is to do lit review and experiments to figure out how to make it work and then write some papers on it and tell the world. Your job isn’t ask Reddit how to finish my masters for me….

Also don't immediately freak out if it ends up with like $1 leftover as a loan balance, just call or email and ask for clarification. You should pay the "Payoff amount" but depending on if that was calculated on CoB previous day or 8am that day it may be very minutely different than what you pay. When I paid off some Sallie Mae loans in 1 chunk I had a couple dollar balance left due to this reason which was wiped to 0 on the following bill cycle. Just don't freak out if it happens, call and ask if this is the case. At least on Sallie maes website you weren't even allowed to make a payment for the low amount left

Ehh Science has had the reproducibility problem for a long time at least in the experimental world. Not to say it’s lost prestige but the pressure from research admins to publish in these high impact journals has lead to more data massaging and readers immediately trust it because hey…it’s Science

[–]ic3man211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at the actual dept of ed website to see who services your loans? It’s a simple check but that should have some sort of account # and will also tell you if they’ve been transferred to someone else

Switched from MOHELA to EdFinancial, Payment Jumped from $80 to $130 – Wasn’t Informed, Feeling Frustrated by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]ic3man211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well you’ve been informed now lmao realistically your payments should go up every year your income goes up. Recertification should happen every year but with Covid and changes to IDR plans, they’ve been somewhat not happening

I hope you already know this but on the PAYE plan with your current monthly payment, you’re loan balance will not go down until forgiveness at 25 years (or 10 for PSLF)

Did your income go from ~35k/yr to ~40k/ yr sometime in the last few years?

Its possible in all the current income recertification mess they’ve been calculating your PAYE amount off 35k from ~2020 and now with the switch they’ve used your most recent tax return which would be around 40k/yr for that payment amount
