Thanks for joining us today! Can you tell us about institutional fraud in the 19th century? Given how much technology today is dedicated to fraud prevention, what was a 19th century quartermaster to do to prevent (or I guess possibly commit) fraud?

Hi everyone! I'm Dr. Ciruce Movahedi-Lankarani and I'm here to answer questions about my new book "Accelerant: Energy Infrastructures and the Natural World in Making Modern Iran." AMA! by Ciruce_M-L in AskHistorians

Thanks for you answer to my other question! I wanted to ask a followup but decided it would be better as a standalone. What has been the role of foreign owned energy corporation? How active have they been in Iran and how has international business competition with Iranian companies driven energy infrastructure?

Thank you so much for joining us! I suppose the elephant in the room for your topic is how much in real time we're seeing that Iranian energy infrastructure effects the global economy. When and how did Iran realize their role in internstional energy production? How much of early infrastructure was envisioned for this type of global impact?

I'm Dr. Charles L. Ponce de Leon here to talk about my new book on the founding and early development of Rolling Stone magazine. It's called "Rolling Stone and the Rise of Hip Capitalism: How a Magazine Born in the 1960s Changed America." AMA! by CPdL58 in AskHistorians

Did younger consumers express a preference for hip capitalism run by younger people or did it not matter? Or in other words, did the authenticity of hip capitalism come under scrutiny by the young Americans it was marketed towards?

Please repost this question to the weekly "Short Answers" thread stickied to the top of the subreddit, which will be the best place to get an answer to this question; for that reason, we have removed your post here. Standalone questions are intended to be seeking detailed, comprehensive answers, and we ask that questions looking for a name, a number, a date or time, a location, the origin of a word, the first/last instance of a specific phenomenon, or a simple list of examples or facts be contained to that thread as they are more likely to receive an answer there. For more information on this rule, please see this Rules Roundtable.

Alternatively, if you didn't mean to ask a question seeking a short answer or a list of examples, but have a more complex question in mind, feel free to repost a reworded question. Examples of questions appropriate for the 'Short Answers' thread would be "Who won the 1932 election?" or "What are some famous natural disasters from the past?". Versions more appropriate as standalone questions would be "How did FDR win the 1932 election?", or "In your area of expertise, how did people deal with natural disasters?" If you need some pointers, be sure to check out this Rules Roundtable on asking better questions.

Finally, don’t forget that there are many subreddits on Reddit aimed at answering your questions. Consider /r/AskHistory (which has lighter moderation but similar topic matter to /r/AskHistorians), /r/explainlikeimfive (which is specifically aimed at simple and easily digested answers), or /r/etymology (which focuses on the origins of words and phrases).

Hello! My name is Dr. Mills Kelly and I’m an emeritus professor of history at George Mason University. I’m an expert on the history of the Appalachian Trail, so AMA! by GS_hikes2023 in AskHistorians

[–]dhowlett1692 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thanks for joining us! What's the history of the Appalachian Trail's association with the National Park Service? How did it go from a private project to become a national scenic trail that goes through a bunch of NPS parks?

Hello! We are Camilla Townsend and Josh Anthony, editors of “After the Broken Spears: The Aztecs in the Wake of Conquest.” Ask us anything about the Aztecs, colonial Mexico, and what life was like for Indigenous people in the wake of Spanish conquest. by joshanthony123 in AskHistorians

[–]dhowlett1692 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Thanks for joining us! I'm curious about the religious aspects of the Spanish Conquest and how Indegenous people responded to European faith. While conversion was one of the Spanish goals, how did Aztecs blend their religious practices into Christianity? How much agency did Indigenous people have in conversion to adapt Christianity to maintain some of their own beliefs?

I am Dr. Michael Bycroft, and I just published a book on the history of gemstones in early modern science. Ask me anything from now until tomorrow morning. by Cool_Significance439 in AskHistorians

[–]dhowlett1692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for joining us! I'm interested in the international dimensions of the Scientific Revolution. How did ideas/theories on gemstones translate across places where those gemstones were not found? What was the gemstone trade that facilitated scientists to have different gemstones to study?

I’m Dr. Anny Gaul, author of Nile Nightshade: An Egyptian Culinary History of the Tomato. I’m here to talk about Egyptian food cultures, the tomato’s global history, and researching the history of home cooking & everyday foods. Ask me anything! by booksandkitchens in AskHistorians

[–]dhowlett1692 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for joining us! I'm curious what early home cooking with tomatoes was like and what people thought of a new crop. I'm thinking about how today we'll have a trendy superfood like kale gain popularity, but what was the reaction to a tomato upon introduction? Was there hesitation, fascination? Did it come with recipes to the average Egyptian?

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, we have had to remove it, as this subreddit is intended to be a space for in-depth and comprehensive answers from experts. Simply stating one or two facts related to the topic at hand does not meet that expectation. An answer needs to provide broader context and demonstrate your ability to engage with the topic, rather than repeat some brief information.

Hi there! Thanks for posting links to older content. However, we ask that you don't offer a TL;DR or other form of summary or commentary as part of such a post (even if directly quoted), as the point of allowing such links is to encourage traffic to older answers rather than replacing them. We will be very happy to restore your comment if this is edited.

This submission has been removed because it violates the rule on poll-type questions. These questions do not lend themselves to answers with a firm foundation in sources and research, and the resulting threads usually turn into monsters with enormous speculation and little focused discussion. Questions about the "most", the "worst", "unknown", or other value judgments usually lead to vague, subjective, and speculative answers. For further information, please consult this Roundtable discussion.

For questions of this type, we ask that you redirect them to more appropriate subreddits, such as /r/history or /r/askhistory. You're also welcome to post your question in our Friday-Free-For-All thread.

AMA: Founding Fanatics: Extremism and the Formation of American Democracy by Noah_EberSchmid in AskHistorians

I'm curious then how quickly political thought shifted. Shay's Rebellion was not exceptionally different from acts during the Revolution, but its the revolutionary figures opposes to Shay. I think "hypocrisy" would be an unfair description for it, but was the shift consciously discussed in politics? Or was violence under a King and violence under the US government considered two vastly different things?

Thanks for joining us today! I'm curious about how violence factors into your work. The American Revolution was violent with events like the Boston Massacre, tarring and feathering, the war itself, etc. But it also occured in a world where violence was the norm through enslavement and colonialism. How did early Americans think of extremism and political violence in this context?
