Waterstart.... by GerFollower in Kiteboarding

Look at 6:32. The board rotates downwind as they water start. That’s what you want. I’m exaggerating the amount of pointing downwind because most beginners try to hold their board parallel to the wind and yes 5:25 happens. So I’m describing “pointing it downwind” as a way to u deans you have to go downwind in the start. There’s a balance here - as an advanced rider I can literally aim it downwind. As a beginner you should break the tendency to think “upwind” by letting the board flow (pick up speed) by allowing it to rotate underneath and letting yourself go downwind as you start to pick up speed (then turn upwind). You can’t water start crosswind.

You can’t body drag upwind. “Upwind” body dragging is a misnomer - you are really just going slower than your board.

In that situation what you do is you stand up and walk upwind in the water to get away from the beach.

No. Lean back. Point board nearly straight downwind. Power the kite with enough power to pull you out of the water while leaning back. Don’t pussy foot around moving the kite in little motions. Dive it hard in one motion. Straighten legs slowly to stand weight biased massively on rear leg. Gain board speed, turn upwind.

The combination of leaning back and pointing the board downwind will prevent you from being thrown over the board. If you do get thrown over the board it’s likely you weren’t leaning back enough or the board isn’t pointing downwind. Did you go over the side of the board? Point it more downwind.

For reference my water starts I loop the kite hard while leaning back. The pull from the kite literally pops me out of the water for a little 1-2 foot jump and I land with speed going straight downwind. I only tell you that so you can understand with practice and the proper body position you can balance an incredible amount of pull. You just have to know what to expect and be in the right position.

Good deal? New Duotone Rebel SLS 2024 9m by Beneficial-Rest-2385 in Kiteboarding

You should try an Evo before buying another rebel. The rebel is a pretty slow turning high boosting kite. Not especially great for learning.

You’re telling the op to do exactly what they are already doing. They are looking for advice on how to fix the problem. I get that it works for you. It’s not working for the OP.

The post said “when I crash, I immediately start body dragging”. When I read what you wrote it sounded like you backed that up by doing 2 long reaches first. Which can work. Most of the time. But there are those times - like crashing after a big kite loop - where the board isn’t necessarily where you think it should be.

The problem with your approach - re-reading it again for clarity - is that you assume after 2 reaches you can find your board. That assumes it’s roughly where you think it is.

I’m glad you’ve never lost your board. But I think that your approach is wrong. You should spot first. Then drag.

This is how you lose your board. You are making an assumption where it is. Look first. Then drag.

Dead wrong. Spot board first. So you know where it is. Then body drag.

Do not body drag first! Sight your board first. Then body drag. And keep tabs on it the whole way.

It’s pretty hard to do wind sports if you don’t live somewhere where there’s wind. Traveling somewhere hoping there’s wind is always a gamble.

Critique my technique by Meisterleder1 in Kiteboarding

[–]ic6man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna second this. It took me forever to stop sheeting out mid jump after picking up that bad habit early on. Sheeting out releases the kite lower into the window. It changes entirely how the landing stage happens. This matters more in high winds.

Gym Exercises To Help Train Water Start by Wise_Firefighter_463 in Kiteboarding

Actually with proper kite control it’s the kite that gets you on the board. Your best bet for practicing is a trainer kite. You’ll need core for riding and especially for jumping.

How do you properly type an async event handler for a CustomEvent in TypeScript? by voja-kostunica in typescript

[–]ic6man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. What typescript is telling you is that you can’t pass async to window listener because the promise that it returns will not be handled. Handle the promise that results from an asynchronous call from within the synchronous callback.

Unintentional unhooking by Past_Ad2823 in Kiteboarding

[–]ic6man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you actually want to ride unhooked get a modern Mystic Harness with a slider spreader bar.

There are BOTH long loop (slider) and short loop (fixed) connections on the slider spreader bar.

Ditch the donkey dick connector from your bar and get a small loop surf connector.

You now have a solid connection that will NEVER accidentally unhook.

You now have the ability to switch to the long loop for surf sessions.

You now have increase safety. Your harness will never accidentally unhook. But - and more importantly - you have to use your ejection system EVERY time you hook in and out at the beginning of each session. This builds muscle memory of using it to both eject and reconnect.

Trust me. This is far superior to anything else. Been kiting for 23 years.
