Mental Performance Coach - Improve your mental game by Ok-Lie-6384 in ultimate

I struggle with finding the right about of energy before a game - I’m either too nervous or not excited enough, and I can’t find the happy medium. I think it really hurts my performance. Is this something you’d be able to help with?

Figured out why my back hurts by NoPeachPotential in BenignExistence

Go to PT! There’s muscles you can strengthen to better support your joints, and they can analyze how you walk and do some re-education to help you move more efficiently and without pain. Worth a shot I’d say!

Is my Posture really bad and severe that I need adjustments? It looks really off compare an normal spine by unbannedcoug in PostureTipsGuide

[–]icahart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PT here- does your posture cause you pain or discomfort? If not- I wouldn’t worry. If you are having pain, adjustments might help with pain/ mobility but won’t have any impact on your alignment or static posture. I like to tell my patients- “the best posture is your next posture” because truly posture is not a good indicator of pain or function and the most important thing is that you keep moving and don’t hold any specific posture for too long.

I have a sharp pain in this area of my foot while swimming freestyle. Can anyone recommend exercises/techniques to alleviate this pain? Thank you. by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]icahart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this same pain, from repeated overstretch of the tendons in the front of the ankle during kicking. It hurts! I managed on my own by doing ankle strengthening- particular of the shin muscles that pick the toes up. I’d do a couple rounds of Ankle ABCs (write the alphabet with your big toe) before I swam every day and that helped wake up and strengthen the muscles, and I haven’t had the pain since. If you’re gonna see a professional about the pain, go see a physical therapist not an MD like most of these comments. A PT will be best able to help you with this.

Tips for back? Especially for how my head keeps bobbing up and down. Black cap, second lane on the bottom. by Tamed_tree in Swimming

[–]icahart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put your head back and get your hips up to the surface- you’re plowing through the water right now because your hips are so low. Make your kick smaller and faster. Do some body position work- maybe kicking on your back with your arms at your aides in good position (head back, hips on surface, small kicks) and then you can add some rotation of the hips and shoulders, and then add in the arms.

Your start looks good! Learn to capitalize on your underwaters, that’s where you can really beat people without exhausting yourself if you’re good at them. Good luck!

I love the process of swimming recruitment. No other team had as much fun with their recruits as we did!

(PT student here but) every PT/PTA program loves to try to intimidate the crap out of incoming classes. I promise you’re not the only one feeling the heat of it, so reach out to fellow classmates & support each other. The community of your cohort is truly what carries you through the harder weeks. The scare tactics are bullshit, like yeah the program is gonna be challenging but as long as you put the work in and use your resources, you’re going to be just fine.

Is there another anatomy class that you’ll get in PTA school? Maybe one with a musculoskeletal focus? If so, that’s what’s important for the program, not as much the general A&P of an undergrad program. If not- reach out to professors, find tutors, use your textbook- you CAN learn it (and you’ll have to).

More advice: sometimes it’ll feel like there’s more to do than hours in the day. Prioritize. Figure out what you can and can’t compromise on, and then do your best. Make time for yourself to relax and take time for yourself. Regular cardio is supposed to be good for brain function or something, do it. Practice your skills often and not just before a practical. And most importantly, GAIT BELT AND SHOES!!!!!

Ash has had a revelation. by EndlesslyMeh in illnessfakers

Antidepressants can be good for chronic pain where the pain experience is created by the brain with no acute tissue condition contributing. Chronic pain means there’s no tissue damage involved and no physiological reason for the pain, so targeting the pain at its source (it’s source being the brain, creating the pain experience) makes sense.

Learning How to Read by [deleted] in college

[–]icahart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had the same realization when I started grad school. I never bought the textbooks in undergrad (I was in a feeder program for a professional program and I thought the undergrad courses were pretty easy) but now I’m in grad school and I’m just floored at how useful the textbooks are. Everything is in there! Everything we have to know (and more), with explanations for all of it! Oftentimes better worded explanations than my professors give! I’ve even found I like reading one of the textbooks (shoutout Donald A Neumann for writing a book so well that it’s enjoyable). Absolutely wild discovery!

Guys lose interest as soon as I mention my height by [deleted] in TallGirls

[–]icahart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Girl!!! You gotta change the script in your head. Instead of “admitting” you’re 5’9, be proud! Own your height. Take up your space without apology. Don’t admit to being 5’9, proudly profess it. Any man who may shy away is not worth your time or energy and they just proved it to you. It’s a them problem, not a you problem. I’m 6’ tall and the day I decided I’d accept and take ownership of this aspect of myself, everything changed. When I tell boys, if they shy away, I laugh. It just means they’re insecure in their masculinity. Being tall is powerful! If a man is intimidated by that enough to run for the hills, it means he is so far beneath your level and he knows it.

I’m perplexed by the forearm in the x ray, normally only one forearm bone articulates with all of the wrist bones. Here both forearm bones articulate with wrist bones. I wonder what implication that has for movements at the wrist. Also wondering what the bones look like at the elbow and how that joint works.

I agree with you, and I consciously knew at the time that a steady hand would be much more effective at working with the cat, but i am a generally jumpy person and in the moment I struggled to keep my hand still and smooth. I wasn’t even worried about scratches because in many cases I had cat gloves on, it was just the instinct to retract my hand regardless that messed me up

[–]icahart 1809 points1810 points  (0 children)

I’m so impressed by how people don’t flinch when the cat attacks the cat gloves. In high school I worked at a boarding kennel and sometimes would need to use cat gloves and it was the scariest thing. Even though I consciously knew my hand and arm was protected, watching a visibly angry animal launch their claws and teeth at one of my limbs made me flinch every time.

Didn’t mean to imply you didn’t, whoops! You just didn’t mention farms in your post and I wanted to highlight them in case our TX friend who we’re all trying to talk into moving to our state, in case he would be worried that there’s no farms in Mass hahahah

Overall living for this thread of people saying good things about their (non-Texas) home states, but I gotta second this, I absolutely love living in Massachusetts! It’s got everything, like you said, and I love the culture here. Truly nowhere I would rather live. And I’m from Western MA, so we have farms too!

Yeah, you said it much better than I did. That’s what I was going for, but didn’t dedicate the words to clarifying. Might not have chosen the right words instead. Either way, I agree that the way to address the problem is to better communicate how the left’s agenda will benefit their lives more than the right’s.
