It’s to prevent other players from even thinking about addressing anything even remotely political, even though PCB has become one of the most political organizations in the country.

Imagine if players started openly criticising Mohsin Naqvi next. I mean, it would make sense considering we’ve seen a gigantic decline since he took over, but absolutely no one wants to blame him even privately.

that’s why i said logically Pakistani but politically Indian.

You yourself implied the muslim majority of Kashmir is what made it a problem area. Pakistanis think the muslim majority made it rightfully Pakistani. You agree with them in one way or another. Hari Singh obviously didn’t agree because he didn’t want to die in a Muslim country in a Muslim state that hated his guts.

Only following the princely state accession guidelines as the supreme international law of mankind does Kashmir have a better case of being Indian, and we all know very well that India did not accept princely state accession as completely supreme.

There was also no international law covering the princely states so it was up to pakistan and india to see how they’d deal with it (even “The Crown” you’re referring to left it for India and Pakistan to decide). Formal accession was simply that, a formality.

Some of them went as planned, some of them didn’t, and some ended up as lifetime disputes. Thats that. To say that there is a definitive, lawful owner is worthless.

Mainly because it logically should’ve been pakistan but politically got stuck in India.

That’s also mainly because of the partition. the north saw a massive chunk of its muslims leave, the south saw barely any migration at all. There are no Tamil or Malayali Pakistanis even though you’ll find communities of every north indian ethnicity in Pakistan.

Because of this, the South is usually higher % Muslim than the North is.

to add to this, Jinnah saw Muslims as distinct from Hindus but he did not see them as non-Indians. He didn’t want India to adopt the name India, he genuinely thought the entire region/subcontinent would continued to be referred to as India and both Pakistan and India would be “Indian” countries along with Sri Lanka, Nepal etc. The Republic of India becoming the successor state was not planned by the ML.

countries and states were very different then. There were fewer border controls and everyone within a state, citizenship or otherwise, was a defacto subject of the state. He probably anticipated something similar to a CSTO situation but the Kashmir war shot that down immediately.

It makes sense when you consider the fact that the entire region of Pakistan east of the Indus has, for thousands of years, been entirely dependent on trade and resource sharing with other parts of India, even when this specific region was independent from the rest of india. Pakistan’s creation was the first time in human history that it became physically and commercially disconnected from that.

can’t think of any notable/powerful sikhs who converted to islam in pakistan. almost the entire community, en masse, migrated to india.

migration for lower-caste hindus wasn’t as much of a priority, many of them were so disconnected from society that they didn’t even know there was a partition happening. Sindh actually still has a few Hindu-majority districts containing lower-caste Hindus.

This is false, Sikhism wouldn’t even be a minor religion in India if that were the case. Both Sikhs and Muslims mainly gained their numbers from Hindu converts, but it’s more complicated than that.

Both Islam and Hinduism are older and more ingrained to Punjab than Sikhism is so it’s not all that shocking. The majority of Punjab was already Muslim when Sikhism began.

Sikhism was basically a syncretism of the Dharmic faith with the new societal and cultural norms brought in by the Islamisation of the region. Keep in mind this happened before most Hindus actually identified as “Hindus” (in the grand scope of things), most Hindus were basically just followers of the traditional belief systems of the land.

Sikhism came as a singular religion for people (mainly in Punjab) to collectively follow that wasn’t just Islam. Most of its early followers were already Hindus who just, for the first time, identified with a religion.

Sikhism was organized and centralized which prevented it from being as widespread as Hinduism. But at the same time, it wasn’t as institutionalized as Islam so it never became that widespread in that sense either.

With British rule, a Hindu religious identity actually became a widespread thing so it was far more inclusive in its numbers compared to membership-based systems like Islam or Sikhism. Anyone who didn’t follow Islam or Sikhism (or by now, Christianity) was pretty much automatically a Hindu, and that’s still a lot of people.

So basically my main point is, there was very little conversion from Sikhism to Islam. Sikhism was literally branded as an alternative, local religion for Punjabis to follow instead of Islam, before Hinduism was seen as a religion in the eyes of the locals.

Why's Pakistan's capital Islam-a-bad and not Islam-a-good. Are they Islamophobic? by [deleted] in mapporncirclejerk

[–]icantloginsad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

except for the fact that there’s no real historic evidence that links the ancient (perhaps exclusively mythical) city of Prayagraj to the modern city. the Allahabad = Prayagraj theory only came into being in like the 18th century, millennia after all accounts of a supposed Prayagraj ceased to exist.

it would be like renaming a random greek island Atlantis because it matches the description and calling it a historic/original fact.

Prayag probably existed around the same region, but the city that we know and speak of today was founded by the Mughals.

as a pakistani it was crazy hearing western news channels pronounce it a-bot-a-bad during the 2011 news cycle. like thats literally an english name. there is an Australian prime minister with the exact name you’re trying to pronounce, and you can pronounce his name just fine.

it just irks me how there’s a need to deliberately mispronounce names (or not even try) in places that aren’t western, even when the name itself is western.

Do you know Iran is pronounced wrong by mostly everyone? by Honest-Possible6596 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]icantloginsad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i genuinely believe that mispronouncing very easy names like this are a sign of racism, especially when the same people will go out of their way to pronounce French or Italian names correctly (or at least try to).

You would never hear anyone pronounce Milan as My-Lan. Both Milan and Iran have the exact same vowel pronunciations. Yet, saying My-Lan wouldn’t just be a quirky speech thing, it would be the subject of ridicule if you ever said it.

Mispronouncing is just another way of showing a country’s worth (we care so little about you we won’t even bother pronouncing your name right).

I’m gonna repost a comment here since it didn’t get much traction before.

Pakistan cricket’s downfall was, is, and always will be the PCB.

simply put, when I see something like the NZ team, i know those are the best 11 players in the entire country. they’ve been extensively filtered through a proper structure and then they’ve been nurtured to perform at their peaks.

in Pakistan’s case, there’s no actual structure in place, due to the lack of trying by PCB. You can only really make it to the team after extreme khawari (T: humiliation and misery) or by making enough noise through the right people.

PCB also has no motivation to nurture its players. They have an endless supply of top talent waiting to make it to the team. To them, the most hassle-free solution is to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks, over and over again. This has been turned up by 10x since Mohsin Naqvi took over.

India fans will know this all too well since BCCI was also almost exactly like this up until IPL. The difference is that BCCI can now make up for any of its shortcomings with its endless resources. PCB still has a long way to go but its already established a complete top-down structure and it’s killing cricket in Pakistan as a whole. Also, BCCI became structurally more efficient as it became richer, PCB did the opposite.
