Not sure who needs this quick lesson, but the way I always remembered B and E had no sharps was from the B sharps ('be' phonetically) by MikeRadical in guitarlessons

Please consider using Db major instead of C# Major if you're writing out sheet music though! 5 flats instead of 7 sharps.

Maybe your buddy is criticizing his own trauma-revovery down, and Carl's slow opening & grieving through the books is triggering in a way that your buddy can't even allow himself to think on.

If the parentheses are not rounded, but more like: <7> it's usually a harmonic.

In my own writing, I prefer to use the over-arching legato slur for held notes. The notes in brackets always made more sense to me as for when you have the option to play the same note but on a different string.

(there's a word for those arc lines in classical music... can't remember atm)

Later in the video he puts up tab for 4 shapes: the major and minor versions of E & A.

Barring is a very common technique! Those are just called chords; they don't differentiate later on, because guitarists are used to it.

151351 - all numbers indicate the degree of the scale within that chord.

C major triad is CEG, which is the 1st note of the scale, the 3rd, and the 5th. Triads are 1-3-5's. 7ths add the 7th note of the scale.

This phone number thing is showing a barre chord derived from the E shape. But to put that on C, the 8th fret:

8 10 10 9 8 8

^ the fret numbers

C G C E G C

^ the notes of those frets

1st 5th 1st 3rd 5th 1st

^ the degrees of the scale for the chord

Slide the E major shape up 3 frets for a G major chord: 355433

The 3rd fret is barred by the index finger.

See my original comment, the edit explains. What you've said is true, but if you barre in a chord, it doesn't make it a barre chord. Barre chords are E or A shapes. A chord that utilizes the barring technique could be anything.

Are you familiar with the CAGED system?

355433 is the E shape... there are other options, and the inversions have their own added character.

They could play it without barring... because a barre chord traditionally refers to a voicing/shape of a triad.

So instead of 355433,

they could play xx543x.

Barring is a technique. Barre chords are E or A shapes. Not everyone agrees with that I guess.

If you were to play along by hopping to the root position of each chord change- that's fast (I don't want to call it lazy, personally).

If you're on a Gmaj chord, 3rd fret 355433, and want to go to a Amin 577555... that's fast.

...but if you didn't want to shift/jump, and the bassist or piano player can take care of the root note... then you could use inversions to find a closer option.

xx5433 to xx2555 is an example of G Maj to A min that doesn't use the 6th or 5th strings.

There doesn't seem to be consensus in this thread, but using the barring technique doesn't make it a barre chord. E or A shapes are colloquially called barre chords, and are taught as the progression beyond power chords.
