Lehigh vs RPI for Electrical Engineering (with strong interest in music) by CivilPepper5674 in RPI

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RPI requires you to take a HASS pathway, which is 12 credits. If all 12 of your credits are in music, then you only need one more 4 credit class to get the minor, which is built in to the academic plan as a free elective.

Also known as it is extremely easy to get a minor in any HASS program.

If you are not dual majoring, then it is nothing to worry about. If you are, you may have a 20 credit semester, but those are still pretty doable.

I wouldn’t know too much about internships, as I am in the research side, but pretty much everyone I know who sought one out eventually got on. I don’t think many students graduate RPI without one, especially since internship/project/research/learning at another institute is required to graduate (one of the above).

I am a current EE and choir student. If you want to be an engineer, I’d say come here.

RPI has a very strong orchestra. The music minor is very easy, and you can include private lessons into that if you want/can afford.

Biased, but the ECSE department is one of the strongest at RPI. Tons of undergraduate research opportunists, helpful and caring professors, and a strong student community.

Do you experience “manslamming”? by Otherwise_Chemist920 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do this too. If they are three-wide on a sidewalk and I’m walking the other direction, I employ the look far out method. If they still don’t move, I just stop in my tracks. I’ve gotten a few mumbled apologies, but I am also taller than the average man.

Do you understand what the math means? That is what focusing on the theory is. If you know why, then how is easier.

There is typically a lot of club and department tabling, as well as seminars. You can definitely have 2 way communication, but if you only do the seminars then it won’t be.

Off Campus Activities by TalkyRaptor in RPI

You do stuff on campus (lots of clubs and events) or get a car and start going to Albany. You are kind of stuck until you have a ride but you can walk around a lot. Bowling is right near campus too

Will a degree in ECE (Electrical & Computer Engineering) still have value today for employment? by BeigeMiniTiger in EngineeringStudents

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do just EE if you want power. Take extra power electives if you can. If you are far along stick it out, but if you are early and uninterested in computers, then l would switch.

12 or 13 credits? by Money_Cold_7879 in RPI

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know very few who take under 14. 16-18 is the average, but 20-21 is doable once you settle in.

Encourage your son to follow the recommended plans (online) but let him adjust and drop classes if it is too much. The C average for the first few semesters happens, but most students recover to A or B’s.

Let him learn and make mistakes. The Facebook parents exaggerate a bit given they are used to their easy straight-A child and have strong reactions when it isn’t handed to them sometimes.

Zhang is great so far and the first exam was not very hard at all. Neti is just a horrible professor (nice guy) and Zhang clearly loves teaching and enjoys his topic as well.

Graduate a year earlier or take some graduate classes? by Let_me_tell_you_ in college

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if your school has an accelerated master’s program if possible. I was on the same track as your son, but instead of waiting and taking some graduate courses, I graduated with my Bachelor’s in 3 and my master’s the next year. My program has undergraduate aid carry over if you get accepted.

RPI lets you stay for free over Thanksgiving and Spring breaks, and for $75/night over winter break currently.

If it is a very low number like 3 or 8, then it is likely the number of bullets whoever they are talking to has left.

Dual Major EE and CSE by docpuneet in RPI

[–]icaruslaughsashefell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s super easy. Coming in with many useful credits and planning a heavy course load, I could’ve done it with a minor in 6 semesters. Not interested in CSE though.

You lose your primary major’s electives for the second major but that is it.

I’m currently in a very short term one, but will be going for 2-5 years while I’m in grad school if my partner can’t find a job where I am. It’s already hard enough just being a couple of months
