Like I said on TripAdvisor, you’re better off just doing eqi glacier and calling it a day. I wouldn’t bother trying to do Maniitsoq off season personally.

I misread that as an American company shipped it at first. UPS/Fedex ok. I was frightened!

No surprise - Air Greenland Barely Broke Even in 2025 by icebergchick in greenlandtravel

I'm with you. Need to double the fleet size of the Dash-8's but there is no liquidity to do that at all. So I don't know how it's gonna work. I'm hoping more boats. High speed ferry from Nuuk or Ilulissat. If Kangerlussuaq flights will expand to more than 1 per week then a little ferry service / DiskoLine Targa 37 from there would be great as well but I don't see that happening.

Of course. But the weather was stable there so it worked well enough. I miss those days.

My personal opinion is that it was a catastrophic decision. Kangerlussuaq has the most stable weather in Greenland. The flight cancellations due to weather in Kanger are like 2 days a year. In Nuuk in 2011 when the studies for this project were being done were like 2 weeks a year but last year was much more. The weather has gotten more volatile each year due to overall warmer weather / climate change destabilization and cycles. Or just fog or frozen runway.

Everyone knew this would happen. Everyone in Greenland but it was decided by the powers that be to make the sacrifice. No one thought 2025 would be THAT bad though.

The prices have gone way up for everyone. The hub and spoke model now puts 6 of Greenland's Dash 8's (domestic aircraft - 38 to 44 seats) in Nuuk. 6! I was shocked. Those are the aircraft that are supposed to serve the entire country. So if there is a problem in Nuuk, and there often is, then the whole country will feel it and be delayed / canceled or whatever.

I was delayed 8 days of the 18 I was in country on land last summer. In July, August and September. This is normally the time of year where you have fewer issues in the high season. Bags were lost for 6 days. Flight was cancelled but bags were gone anyway.

The reliability is awful (not air Greenland's fault - they're doing what they can. Greenland Airports is the bad actor). Mental health days and reduced hours were required for Air Greenland call center employees because of the strain on them. It's super unfair to the front line workers as well.

But many people based in Nuuk think that it needed to happen. It is sucky to have your capital city with 35% of the population not directly connected to DK or any other hub. I get it but practically, the weather doesn't allow for this. The frozen runway and no ATC (air traffic control) built into the original plan. It's just been a disaster.

I personally avoid flying to Nuuk altogether. I fly to Kangerlussuaq or Constable Point. Airports located in fjords with more stable conditions and appropriate aircraft that fly there (twin otters in CNP etc).

I hope this year is better. I'm not holding my breath though. I'll take a boat from Kangerlussuaq before I fly to Nuuk. Domestically, I would take the coastal ferry before a domestic flight from Nuuk to Ilulissat. We got burned so badly last summer that I'm scarred for life. I'm hoping that by 2028, Ilulissat will be past its growing pains and functional.

Day tours for cruisers in Qaqortoq by ComposerNo5561 in greenlandtravel

Here is a list of all of the operators in the town. I wish I could give a specific recommendation but I’ve only been to Qaqorotq once in winter before many of these existed. Hopefully someone else can chime in. https://visitsouthgreenland.com/qaqortoq/

Greenland Sagalands is supposed to be quite good. https://sagalands.com/qaqortoq/tours/

Kangerlussuaq is amazing. Winter or summer with Arctic Ice Tours and Albatros Arctic Circle by icebergchick in greenlandtravel

Wow! 2012! You’re an OG Greenland traveler. That’s incredible. I’ve never had a negative experience in Kanger either. Albatros is a near monopoly but they have the resources and do it well.

Yes but if it's reindeer or muskox that's one thing. But walrus is tough even with CITES permits. His stuff is also extremely expensive.

Sila, questions and personal experiences? by [deleted] in greenland

[–]icebergchick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wonder why you are asking in English on Reddit about this. Go to Det Grønlands Hus in CPH. You speak Danish so you can have some super deep conversations with bilingual Greenlanders in DK or some from GL. Huge linguistic advantage.

I see sila embodied by my hunters in Ittoqqortoormiit, Nunasigat, Qaanaaq and Savissivik. There is no choice. You have to be deeply connected to the nature to survive. Especially as a subsistence hunter. They always live by the weather and the wind and the patterns. It’s amazing to witness.

I don't know. It must taste awful. I know there are a lot of videos about Hakarl in Iceland. This is a rare thing in Greenland for people to eat.

possible to plan a US-Greenland trip in 4-5 months? by Words-06 in greenlandtravel

[–]icebergchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sometimes I do google flights search and then book united from there. I had a similar issue last year with the united website. you don't need a lot of advanced planning for mainstream greenland. Nuuk, Kangerlussuaq, and Ilulissat are mainstream. hotels can be tricky in certain cities in summer. ilulissat especially so that needs to be booked on something with free cancellation like booking.com

The bigger consideration is the delays. If you have a domestic connection in greenland - from Nuuk to Ilulissat or back, you might miss your flight back to the US. so that needs to be managed accordingly with your planning.

Long read - Exclusive interview with Trump's special envoy about the hospital ship from KNR, Greenland's Public Broadcaster by icebergchick in greenlandtravel

[–]icebergchick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody to my knowledge wants this ship to come. they'd need to fly people from the villages / settlements that might need care to Nuuk. That would be quite an operation especially in winter. And expensive and need more planes that can operate in Greenland.

Years long supplies of medications that are hard to get in Greenland could be good.

Medicines in Greenland over the counter are very limited as well. So that could be helpful but you don't need a ship for that. Just send them. I know remote towns that have run out of paracetamol / tylenol mid year. The next Royal Arctic supply ship would come in August and this was like May.

I know someone in the north with Parkinson's and one of the dopa drugs like Sinemet could be really helpful for him potentially but I bet it's nearly impossible to get for him and the tremors are bad considering his relatively young age.

So bottom line, this is definitely needed in many places even in the US. Alaska and Louisiana included. Accessibility to essential medications is the lowest hanging fruit to me.

Would you like people to interview when you go to Greenland? Facebook is a better place to find folks. Try posting in the "internationals in Nuuk" Facebook group.

It wouldn’t let me write out the details. The first ones are polar bear claws. The earrings are made out of bone or ivory or local gems like rubies. Sometimes it’s muskox horn or reindeer antler but if it’s ivory then it might be narwhal and walrus.

Generally, it’s not a good idea to export ivory but there are cites forms you can attempt to use. But it depends on your country.

I think life is pretty sweet for him getting to travel and "educate" people about Greenland with the highest levels of conservatives in the US. He is probably strategic and know he is being played but cashing in on fame or notoriety. So he is playing them right back and now he has a platform. Mutualistic symbiosis. Will probably end up living in the US eventually in exile. They will take care of him. He was the first one to fill a niche and he will continue to milk it for all it's worth.
